I don't know the answer to your problem, but while (or until) you try to solve it you might want to stop iPhoto from automatically opening when you connect your iPhone. To do so open the 'Image Capture.app here:
Applications > Image Capture.app
With your iPhone connected, change the setting to 'No application' in the bottom of the Image Capture panel.
