When i plug my ipod into my laptop, it comes up as a new ipod. It says it can't sync and wants me to restore it to its original factory settings but I don't want to because I will lose everything.

I am unable to sync usic to my touch Ipod..When I plug it into my laptop Itunes opens but the word 'device' along with the name of my Ipod does not apperar.
My Ipod and Itunes are upto to date. After Itunes opens a small box with the word Ipod appears near the top of the right side of the screen. Then screen will go through the five steps of syncing. Afterward, still nothing has transfered to my Ipod(The box next to the songs I wanted were check)
ANY IDEAS?..THANKSIf you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Then make sure that you have the right boxes chacked to sync. See:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Have you successfuly synced from that iTunes library before? -
When I plug my iPod into my laptop, it freezes.
All of the sudden, one day my iPod froze when I plugged it into my laptop, and then it happened again when i plugged it in!
Windows Windows XPWhat exactly do you mean when you say that the iPod freezes when you connect it to your computer? Does it just display the "Do Not Disconnect" screen when connected, and doesn't get off that screen?
If so, this screen will continue to stay displayed on your iPod, usually because you either have Disk Use enabled, or you are manually managing your iPod's songs.
If you are automatically syncing songs to your iPod, then disable disk use (if you would like iTunes to automatically eject your iPod after the sync is complete).
For more info, see this:
Using Disk Use for iPod
If you are manually managing your iPod's songs, then you will have to eject it from your computer before unplugging it to make it safe to disconnect.
To eject an iPod, click on the little arrow next to your iPod's name in the iTunes Source List.
Or, you can go to the Safely Remove Hardware program, found among the System Tray icons, which are in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Select "Apple iPod USB", and click on "Stop".
For more details on safely disconnecting an iPod, see this:
Safely Disconnect iPod
If the Do Not Disconnect screen is not the problem, then have you tried resetting your iPod? To reset an iPod:
First, toggle the iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times (leave it on the white side of the switch).
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
Try this several times, then connect your iPod to your computer again.
If that doesn't seem to work, then try putting your iPod into disk mode, following the steps in this article:
Putting iPod into disk mode
After the iPod is in disk mode, connect it to your computer, and see if it doesn't freeze.

My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC. When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized. The Device Manager lists it as an Unknown Device. I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but it had no affect. The odd thing is that our other iPod (160 GB Classic) is recognized on the same computer using the same USB cable. When I plug the ipod in question into another PC, the PC seems to recognize the iPod and lists it in Windows Explorer (iTunes is not installed on this machine). There seems to be something out of wack with this PC/iPod combo. Any thoughts on what I can do to try to resolve this issue? I tried all of the steps listed here, but they didn't help me. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?

Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?
Have you carefully worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

Some of my songs are listed twice on my iPod itself. However, when I plug the iPod into my computer, the songs don't show up twice in iTunes when I click on device/music. How do I get rid of the duplicate songs on my iPod?
that is odd! that should not be happening.
Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes. -
