When i quit safari my preferences get reset
For some reason after I upgraded to OSX mavericks, whenever I quit safari my preferences are reset.
I have the same problem. And I figured a way around it for me.
I'm guessing that you don't have your podcasts set to sync with your computer, right? I wasn't going to sync my podcasts since I listen to them mainly on the road, or doing chores and so I need my podcasts portable rather than on the computer. Since I can download podcasts directly from my iPhone I don't even bother with the computer.
But it was annoying me, so I tried everything. I decided to go in to the settings in iTunes and sync all podcasts. I did this, and now it remembers where I am in the podcasts and even if I'm done listening to them. fixed! The thing that ***** now is that I have to also transfer all the new podcasts I download to my computer everytime I hook the thing up when I have new ones, and I can't delete the podcasts off the computer until I'm absolutely done listening to the program because it will delete it off the iPhone.
Until this bug is fixed I've gone to just downloading them on the computer and transfering them to the iPhone when I hook it up.
Let me know if this works for you or if you have any problems with some of the things that iTunes wants you to click on that scare you about syncing erasing podcasts (I did it because I only had about 5 podcasts at the time and so I wasn't worried about having to go and get those podcasts again if I needed to). For me, it didn't erase any of the podcasts from the phone, rather it put them on iTunes. Now if you delete them off of iTunes after they get put there, they will delete off the phone now that it's syncing, I think. Hopefully it will work that way for you and you won't have to worry either.
I hope this helps for now. I don't like syncing, but it's better for me than trying to remember where I was and which ones I had listened to already.

Try deleting the cache and reset ...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that doesn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist (preferences)
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari.
If it's working ok now, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If you have trouble finding those files, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen, click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here: ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go -

First, go to the website that you wish to make your Home page. Then click on Safari>Click on Preferences on the dropdown menu>Click on the "General" tab on top of the window which should be on your screen>click on the "Set to Current Page" button which is under the Home Page line. This should solve the problem.

When I use safari I keep getting a small coloured circular icon which in turn does not allow me to navigate at all. the only way I can get rid of it is to shut down and reboot. Can anyone help?

Every time I used to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore , instead it open in a website called Only Search, I went to safari preferences and made all changes but after I quit Safari and open again all changes are gone. I can not change anything and new tab comes by it self with other website.
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked. -
I'm getting an error message when I quit Safari
Whenever I quit Safari after closing the window and then right clicking on the Safari icon in the dock to quit it, after a couple of seconds I keep getting a message stating Safari has quit unexpectedly asking if I want to report it.
I've no idea why this message keeps appearing as it hasn't quit unexpectedly I've carried out the quit action.

This happens to me to a couple of weeks ago.
It appear that every time I opened a PDF file in Safari ... it gave me the exact same message by quitting Safari as you have.
I my case by posting the Safari crash report HERE ... is that my Adobe Acrobat Pro 7x was out dated for Leopard - Safari 3.2.1.
NOW everything is running again smoothly as before, I purchased Adobe Acrobat Pro 9x
So, this could be the same with a out dated plug-inn as iBod already said.

Why when I open safari do I get an unbelievable offer of a free iphone
When I open Safari I get an offer to click on an offer to see if I am entitled to a free iPhone.
I cannot get rid of this page which I strongly suspect is untrustworthy.
How can I get rid of it? I can't move it into the trash.It's probably not malware. It's a JavaScript scam that only affects your web browser, and only temporarily. There are several ways to recover.
1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.
3. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.
After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize. -

An incompatible version of SpeedDownload can cause some versions of Safari to crash when quitting, as you are currently seeing.
Go to www.yazsoft.com and install the latest version available. If that fails to fix the problem, try uninstalling it completely using the SpeedDownload installer (and notify SpeedDownload support of your issues - they should be able you out with respects to that). -
When I restart my computer, preferences are reset?
When I restart my computer after updates/etc., my dock is reset to include default apps, while removing custom folders/apps or "forgetting" (shown as "?") the location of certain apps. This happens regardless of whether I accept or deny a keychain-looking request on boot, pre-login that asks for admin confirmation to "modify" settings or so. This is annoying because i have to drag all unwanted apps off of the dock. It also resets all the desktop size/grid/alignment settings.
My harddrive was replaced by a certified Apple Technician and is now a solid state drive. The computer finds the startup disk "f", which shows up under the harddrive in disk utility. OSX.8.1, 4GB RAM, these updates on a mid-2009 13" Macbook.
Side note,
Microsoft Word also seems to be negatively affected by OSX.8. Autosave doesn't appear to work? It consistantIy tells me that autosave or autorecovery have failed. I have the latest MS Office and have google to try and solve--some files are suddenly "read only", and older .doc files cannot be opened. I have old reference data and passwords in some of these files! Losing them is not ok.I tried the disk verify/repair, but the same problems persist. Also ran all available udpates.
The warning dialogue/password prompt at boot asks to "modify network configuration". It seems unnecessary for it to always come up? Probably not related to the desktop/dock issues but confusing too. -
When I lauch Safari (5.1 in 10.7) I want it to open to either an empty page or a designated homepage - but istead it opens all the tabs that were open when I quit Safari. How do i stop this, I cant find any preference to achieve this and see nothing in help. Any help?
Hi James - Thanks for the info! This has been bugging me, too. I'm going to uncheck the Restore Windows box. Agree with you that it should be app specific, tho. I like opening to the last page I was working on in pages and numbers. Hope it doesn't change that!

Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application and select the login keychain. If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, unlock it. From the menu bar, select Keychain Access > Preferences > First Aid. If the box labeled Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it. Then select Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid and repair the keychain. Quit the application. -
When I Quit Elements 8 (Mac) - I get an error ?
I have just upgraded Elements from 6 ot 8 on my iMac, 8 loads fine and seems to be working ok, but when I quit the application I get an error.

Safari will not quit. I don't know whether I got a bug but 9 out of ten times now I can't quit Safari. I get the Safari not responding in the Force Quit window.
So I am constantly force quitting and reporting the problem but it continues to happen. Related secondquestion: When reporting problem doe Safari senda solution? Or is this just for their records and fodder for future developments?Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
