When I reboot from Arch, my laptop won't even read its bios anymore...

Hello All,
I have the weirdest problem on my Asus A6T that I have seen in a long time...
Last Sunday, I rebooted my laptop using the "reboot" function in Arch. I never ever use reboot but for once I did.
My laptop did log out but when it should have booted again, even the bios did not start. The screen did not turn on, the HDD did not start to spin up.
As my laptop was hot before the reboot, I thought that my motherboard (or something hardware) died as this laptop had its motherboard and LCD screen changed 1month ago... I just thought here we go again...
I reset the bios, and did all the master reset possible, changes the RAMs, tried to boot without HDD, I tried anything I could think of to troubleshoot my laptop... I decided to let it on the side for 4 days and to not try to boot it again. Before trying after 4 days, I re-did the bios reset, etc. and then it booted as if nothing never happened.
So I tried to reboot the laptop again to see what would happen and guess what... same situation... the BIOS do not boot anymore, etc. I will let it on the side for few days and I bet that my laptop will be fully functional again but does someone have a clue of what could be happening there?
I have had several laptops and desktops over the last 15 years or so and I cannot recall such weird behaviour. How come a reboot *kill*/*freeze* a motherboard to prevent it from booting?
Anyone?
Thanks in advance.
Ludo

My HP 8220 did not reboot correctly unless I added reboot=b to the grub command line. But without it I never had an unusable machine for days, I only had to turn it off the hard way by pressing the power button for a few seconds and on the next press it would come on again cleanly, your machine behaves very strange indeed.

  • [SOLVED]Keyboard and touchpad doesn't work after reboot from Arch

Excuse me, but i'm a newbie. I'm not sure if this is an arch problem, but i will just post it here.
I've beening using Arch64 and it works just fine. However, every time i reboot from arch into Windows 7 (32bit), the keyboard and touchpad will stop responding just when the Win7 splash screen shows, however the mouse works fine. Then when you shutdown the computer (from win7 now) it will take apparently longer time, and sometimes i have to press the power key 5 seconds to make it shutdown.
It seems the correct way (to reboot from arch to win7) is to shutdown down the computer first and start it again, and everything will work fine.
And rebooting from win7 to win7 or arch to arch or win7 to arch will work fine too.
I'm glad to post extra information, but I've got no clue and i'm not sure what to put here.
The laptop is a Lenovo Y450 with Intel Core Dual P7540, 4G Memory, NV GT240M. Kernel version of Arch is 3.0.6 (but the problem existed long since earlier versions) I don't have a swap partition. If you need extra information, please mention the item.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi!
That is indeed strange. Since your external mouse works fine (which probably is connected via USB, right?) it appears that the problem lies somewhere around the internal keyboard/touchpad access. I'm not sure how this works with a Lenovo Y450, but just try to enter BIOS (in case you have not been there, you probably have to hit F1 or F2 during startup - less likely it would be delete or escape ...) and look for your keyboard/touchpad options.
You should probably find something like "... legacy support ...". This is a relic from PS/2 times and emulates your internal input devices as PS/2 devices. So - when found, just change the setting (you cannot mess anything up, and both systems will probably not even pop up a message). My guess is it is set to "enabled" and Arch somehow messes with the PS/2 emulation in your case .... so just turn it off.
    good luck

  • HT203176 i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities and said I need to repair disk from a cd. did that, I got volume repaired from the external disk. when I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

iMovie lock up. I did hard reboot. Now Mac laptop won't start

Can you start up holding Command R to access your recovery partition? If so run Disk Utility to repair the boot volume, if not your hard drive may have failed. Without more information it's kinda hard to tell.

Use your PC to sign-on to your mail service using the browser interface they provide. Delete all the e-mails you don't want on the server. That will prevent the iPad from downloading them.

  • Can my laptop be repaired even if its not made anymore

can my laptop be repaired even if its not made anymore

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Of course, but note that, when Apple considers a Mac as "vintage" (if it was released 5 or more years ago), they haven't got more parts to repair them and your Mac won't be repaired. If it has got less than 5 years, it can be repaired without any problem

  • Laptop won't turn on after BIOS update

A few days ago, my 9470m Ultrabook automatically updated its BIOS. This was fine, as it has updated its BIOS before in the past. I went to do some things while it updated, and when I came back, the laptop had turned off. The charge light (the lightning bolt light on the edge of the laptop) was blinking white and amber and did not turn on when I pressed the power button. When I took off the battery, the light stopped blinking, and when I put the battery back in, the light began to blink again, but the laptop still would not turn back on when I pressed the power button. I've tried taking off the battery and plugging in the AC only, but still the light would just blink and the laptop would not turn on when I pressed the power button. I do not know what is wrong. The laptop had been working flawlessly until the BIOS update. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks to any support.
    -Daniel

    Hi,
At first, please try a Hard Reset as follows.
    Performing a hard reset
Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and SD media cards.
Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to drain all residual power and restore default startup settings.
Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not insert the battery), press the Power button, look for glowing Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) near the caps lock and num lock keys, and listen for sounds of a fan or other moving parts turning.
If the computer starts normally after performing a hard reset, you are done troubleshooting.
When the Notebook restarts keep tapping the f10 key to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults (this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
I am waiting to hear back from you.

  • HT4527 When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, even though all of songs were copied over, not all of them went to iTunes, some appear to be stored elsewhere. How can I find these songs, and how do I transfer them to iTunes?

When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, all my songs were copied over, but not all of them were stored in iTunes. It appears they are on the computer somewhere, but not on iTunes. Where are these other songs likely to be, and how can I get them onto iTunes? Because of this problem, Apple will not allow me to update my iPhone.

You may/must have had music files stored outside of your iTunes library.
I'd recommend going to the Finder and then via the search box look for files with mp3 aif m4a aac etc. depending on the music format your digital music had. With the list of files shown you should be able to learn which files were stored outside of your music > itunes folder
Chances are they could be burried somewhere under your documents, downloads, desktop, ... we all have different storage and organization habits.
Then when you find the missing files, on the new computer you can do add to library and go to the folder on the other computer where the missing files are - if your systems are networked - or sneak them over using a USB thumb drive or portable hard drive if you have lots of files, or if you like to have an extra backup of that music, copy to optical disc.

  • Parameter Error when Transferring Files from ipod to laptop

    Hi,
I have posted this topic previously but didnt respond fast enough and I think the system locked it down as I had too long of a delay.
I have recently set up iTunes on a laptop and want to start using this as my default iTunes for syncing etc. Unfortunately I no longer have access to the desktop that housed my original iTunes so I have followed the instructions to use my ipod as an external disc and transfer the files this way.
These are the instructions I have followed http://lifehacker.com/105256/how-to-copy-songs-from-your-ipod-to-your-pc
There are two issues I see. (1) the ipod control folder is allowing me to see what is housed in the folder but it is slightly greyed out compared to the other folders in the same location.
    (2) when I try and copy the music folder to my desktop etc I get a parameter error.
So for example the error I have when transferring to my desktop I get
"Cannot copy OUTO (the file): The parameter is incorrect.
Hopefully someone has seen this before.
    thx

  • When importing files from desktop to laptop using home sharing, files fail to copy "An unexpected error occured (-50)"

So I'm trying to copy my library from my desktop computer to my laptop. I'm using the import feature when browsing the other library through Home Sharing. Some files wil copy, anywhere from 6-150 songs then it will fail. I have 6000 songs to copy, so I really don't want to babysit my way through this. I'm having to use my wireless network (no external drive available), but it is pretty sturdy. It hasn't been giving me any grief to stream the music, just to copy Is there any fix for this?

The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

  • Distorted musicquality when I play from iTunes on laptop

When I play music from iTunes on my laptop, the sound quality is terrible, distorted, just as if the speaker voloume is too high...but i have lowerede the system volume, and the sound is still distorted. Can anyone help?
    Cheers

    Hey Krysta.H,
Thanks for the question. With the introduction of iOS 7, you can now view all of your iTunes purchases right from the Music application. I believe this may be what you are experiencing. To turn this feature off, navigate to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Show All > Music, and toggle off.

  • S75-B laptop won't accept 1.40 BIOS update

Hi, all. Just purchased an S75-B7394 laptop and received a Toshiba Service Station alert that 1.40 BIOS update is available (the laptop shipped with 1.20). I tried the BIOS update through the Service Station, but it didn't take (appeared to start the update, but didn't complete or reboot laptop). So, I visited support.toshiba.com and found there have been two BIOS updates - 1.30 and 1.40. I thought I might have to do them sequentially, so downloaded and successfully upgraded to 1.30. But the 1.40 update - either through Service Station or with a downloaded file from Toshiba - won't complete the installation process. Any ideas? Thanks.
