When I reinstall os x from dvd, will i lose everything on my hard drive  (photo's)?

When I reinstall os x from the dvd, will i lose all my photos stored on my hard drive?

Normally not.  However, a dying hard drive may cause other things to happen.  It is wise to backup your data before every installing anything*:

  • Reinstall OS X to restore the Recovery HD partition.  Will I lose everything on my hard drive?

I just downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner so I could backup/clone my MBP hard drive.  However, when I started the process I got this notice from CCC: CCC cannot create a Recovery HD on this disk because it cannot find any suitable source Recovery HD volumes or archives.  Reinstall OS X to restore the Recovery HD partition, then return to this window to create a Recovery HD clone on your destination disk.
So, how do I reinstall OS X on my mbp hard drive and will doing this erase all my data, photos, software, etc?  Thanks.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • If i have stuff on my phone and i connect to itunes and hit set up as new iphone instead of restoring from backup, will i lose everything i have on my phone

i need to know what i should hit on itunes for my phone, it says set up as new phone or restore with backup, i dont want to lose what i have on my phone right now, i just want to put the music i have on itunes on my phone.... what should i do?!?!

OK, we don't have the whole story, but it is likely that you previously synced the phone to a different computer. The iPhone can only be synced to one computer at a time; if you change computers the contents of the new computer will replace the contents of the old computer.
If you restore with backup (assuming the computer you are using has a current backup) you will not lose any app content. If you restore as new you can then add music and apps, but you will lose everything else in your backup.

  • Will I lose everything if I upgrade?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but if I run the upgrade to Yosemite (I'm currently on Mountain Lion), will I have to reinstall all my software? Will I lose everything on my hard drive? I've backed up to Time Machine but can it restore stuff if the operating system has since changed? I have a Boot Camp partition too, will that be affected? I'm just a bit nervous at the hassle this is going to cause, especially when I read other comments on here where people are experiencing major problems after upgrading.

Yosemite is slow, the lay-out worse than Snow Leopard, and I have a problem that refuses to let me run some programs.  Apple want to charge me £25 to tell me how to solve the problem.  Don't even think of using Yosemite, it has not one feature to recommend it.  I'd revert to Snow Leopard in a blink of an eye if I knew how to do it.
If you'd like to try to fix what's wrong with your Yosemite installation, or if you'd like some help with going back to Snow Leopard, we could help you with that. In that case it would probably be better to start your own thread and give some more information. You can download Etrecheck, http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, which is a small free app that can generate a system report which you can then post in your new thread.

  • I reinstalled osx 10.8.2 from recovery disk, now verify disk says my hard drive is there but wont boot into it regardless which partition i select to boot into , everytime it boots me into the recovery, i need help!

Mb pro running like garbage with 10.8.2 tried a reinstall of osx from recovery utility now the utility says my hard drive is ok but wont boot into it keeps booting me back into recovery tried restart option to select disk tried using the select startup disk from recovery, gives a message asking if i really want to boot to it and in that message is the only rime it shows a question mark on the drive dont know what to do cant find similar issue

Your rushing and not making much sense.
Your machine was running like garbage, so you tried to reinstall 10.8---did you do this or not?
Disk Utility says your drive is ok, that's good.
But when you boot it keeps booting Recovery HD, so perhaps the firmware has made a mistake, it can forget.
You held the option key down to boot into Startup Manager, why didn't you select OS X for the boot volume?
When you get into OS X you change the Startup Disk in System Preferences, that should take care of the Flashing Question mark issue.
attemtping to ireinstall osx from recovery partition bar is full on install screen, but im now at -6hours remaining
So now your reinstalling OS X like you set out to do before, it does take some time as it has to download from Apple's servers.
If your Internet connection is slow and/or Wifi is slow then it will take awhile.
So you should have the Flashing Question Mark and Reinstall Only OS X covered.
You should be able to boot the machine, but your performance issues may be something else and still remain.

  • Tried to reinstall PS CS6 from download, will not load after download and install, need assistance

I tried to reinstall PS CS6 from download, will not load after download and install, need assistance.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion - but I eventually tried again and was able to contact via "chat" to someone qualified to help. The problem was that in my existing "bridge" - preference was (I think by default) - checked to startup in background on Login. I did not realize this - because I don't think I set it that way in the first place (maybe I did a few years ago) - and I could not see anything in task manager to suggest that bridge was running an application or any process - but when I learned this - I was successful in installing PS CS6.
Yes, I'm still not on solid ground re: whether or not I want to change from "owning" the tool or renting it -- what concerns me is that is sounds like regardless of users wishes, Adobe is headed in this direction and will eventually make it financially more feasible to go that route. At the moment I think they are "asking" for everyone to get on their bandwagon, but who knows. They have a powerful set of tools, that they continue to support and advance - and along with those development and support costs, they also would like to make a profit - so I understand if their past marketing model is no longer sufficient.
    Thanks again.
    John

If they are still on your Mac's drive then you should be able to add them back into iTunes via File > Add To Library

Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.

  • The iCloud was never verified therefore never backing up anything on my iphone 4s because it was the wrong email and now I'm trying to make a new one but it says if I delete the account it will remove it's data from my phone. Will I lose everything?

The iCloud was never verified therefore never backing up anything on my iphone 4s because it was the wrong email and now I'm trying to make a new one but it says if I delete the account it will remove it's data from my phone. So if I put delete account will I lose everything on my Iphone?

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:

As you can see, the stuff circled in red doesn't give me an option to download from Cloud Beta because it already says "downloaded".
any way to get around that?

  • HT1212 When I plug in my iphone into itunes for the first time will i lose everything?

Ive had my iphone for over a year now and it is rather full so was hoping to take stuff off of it and add it to my pc to make room on my phone but i havent yet had it hooked up to itunes on my pc so will i lose everything? please help!

Well, you certainly aren't using it the way Apple intended or describes in the manual, and you have been running a huge risk of losing everything. But if you have never synced it with any computer at all you shouldn't lose anything by syncing now. In iTunes on your computer open Preferences/Devices tab, and check the box to not automatically sync. Then connect the phone. When it appears in iTunes click on its name, then choose "Back Up Now". After you have backed up you can sync safely. If you have photos in the Camera Roll transfer them to a photo app on your computer the same way you would for any digital camera (not using iTunes).

  • If I download the newest version of iTunes to my Mac will I lose everything on iTunes from my version i have now

If I download the newest version of iTunes to my Mac will I lose everything on iTunes from my version i have now

    You should lose nothing.
However, this does not change the fact that you should ALWAYS have a backup copy of everything in your computer, including itunes.
You should ALWAYS make sure that your backup copy of your computer is up to date before any update, restore, etc.

  • TS1363 my phone crashed earlier today, i did update it to iOS5 around July 14, if i restore from my iTunes acct on home computer will i lose everything?

my iphone 3gs crashed today, if i restore will i lose everything on it?

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

  • My daughter wants her own itunes account.  will she lose everything from my account?

My daughter wants her own itunes account.  Will she lose everything from our shared account?

    Hi Randy,
John is correct, there is no true "sharing" it's more like right of use, but she can still use all the stuff she has from your account on her device, it's just a little tricky. My daughter has had her own account for over a year but she had used my account before that. She has her own iPod, Macbook Pro, and now she just bought her own iPhone.
It had never been a big deal to her until she got her phone because she has to use only her account, my e-mail and stuff she does not need on her phone. So use Home Sharing on your computer with her login and her login on her device. The biggest question is are you using two computers or one? With just a single computer it may make it harder because you really have no way of home sharing (I may stand correctly by someone else though). With two computers you just setup home sharing, login to both iTunes accounts with her login, use her computer (or the second computer) and drag all the stuff over to that iTunes library, music, apps, etc. Then they will be on her computer. Then she just drags them on to her iOS device. They will copy and she can use them.
There is no way around updates though. They can only be updated with the original account, which I believe why John stated use iTunes Plus first, because the will not play at all under a different account login. The only advantage that my daughter wanted to use this for was progress on games, so she wouldn't have to start over. Most of our stuff are free downloads so it was not even a repurchase issue as much as time on a game issue.
If you use only one computer, it should work the same way but I have not tried it so I can not say for sure. Logout of you account name and drag the stuff to her iOS device.
