When I restart Firefox, instead of restarting, it simply quits.

I am running Firefox 5.0.1 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
When I restart firefox (for example, in the add-ons manager or through the "Restart Firefox with Add-ons Disabled" link, it does not restart. Instead, it simply quits. The only time that it successfully restarts is when I am in safe mode.

Strange, since Google is unlikely to do that. Maybe it was an bundled installer masquerading as the official one?
To start your clean-up efforts, please check your home page setting. Do you get the 3 tabs when you press Command+n to launch a new window? If so, the extra URLs may be tacked on to your home page setting in the Preferences dialog. These articles describe where to find that. Note that it can be difficult to see the full details of that field due to limited space available, so often it is easier to delete it all and paste in just the URL you want.
* [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
* [[How to set the home page]]
Next, please check your extensions, as they can override your settings. I suggest disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Command+Shift+a
* Tools menu > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or if obviously bad, remove.)
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any improvement?

  • When I open Firefox instead of Firefox startup I get iyogi search

When I click on Firefox instead of opening with Firefox startup page, the page opens iYogi search. I have also downloaded Firefox 4 but that does not open either.

    Hello..!
To solve the issue, please implement the following steps:
    1) Open a new window and load the first website that you want to set as the default home page.
    2) At the top of the Firefox window, click on 'Tools' button followed by 'Options' on the 'Menu' bar. A new window should open now.
    3) Select the 'General' panel.
    4) Click on 'Use Current Page'.
    5) Close the Firefox window and re-open it.
Once all the 5 steps are completed, you will be able to see a new startup page! In case you need any further clarifications or want our customer service representative to help you out, please send an e-mail to [email protected] Do remember to mention your full name and Customer Account ID.

  • Why is it, after nearly 7 years of existence, they still can't bring out a Firefox that doesn't delete all your saved tabs when you close Firefox instead of saving them?

    See title.

Are you using '''''Restore Previous Session''''' when you open Firefox?
Starting with Firefox 4, every session is saved but it is not automatically re-opened, the user needs to restore the previous session. It is in History and on the default homepage.

  • I want Google when I open Firefox; instead I get "inbox". I am using OS 10.6.7

When I tried to open Firefox yesterday, I inadvertently dowloaded an "inbox" home page. I don't want this. I want the home page to have the Google search bar at the center of the page as before. How do I get this back and get rid of inbox?

    Do this.
#In the location bar, type '''about:config''' and hit Enter.
#In the filter at the top, type: '''keyword.URL'''
#Double click it and remove whatever's in there. You'll see it revert to "Default" and "String".
    #Go to File | Exit
#Restart Firefox, go to the site you want to set as your homepage.
    #Go to '''Tools '''| '''Options '''| '''General'''.
#Make sure it says "''Show My Homepage''" in the first dropdown menu.
#Click the button called "'''Use Current Pages'''" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.

  • Firefox doesn't remember the last used download directory that I saved to when it restarts!

Even when I have firefox set to ask me where to save files, it's default location is still the folder selected under "download options", instead of the last location I saved to.
I suspect that this has something to do with the "download.lastdir" option in "about:config", which disappears everytime it's restarted and only appears when I have saved a file before checking on it.
Firefox used to remember the last location in which a file was saved. This was simpler and more convenient.
Is there a way to solve this problem?

  • When I close Firefox and try to restart it, my system thinks it's still running, and I must reboot in order to start Firefox 3.6.11.

When I close Firefox and try to restart it, my system thinks it's still running, and I must reboot in order to start Firefox 3.6.11. I'm running Windows Vista and this is the only program that has this problem. Another symptom is the program does not show up in my recently used programs list nor is it in the task list once I've closed it, though Windows will not open it because it thinks it's still running.

I am also using Windows Vista 64 bit and have the same problem..what i do is instead of rebooting the computer press CTRL ALT and DELETE key. start the task manager and go to the Process tab and look for firefox .exe click on it and hit the end process tab. close that window and firefox should run... and this problem started when i upgraded to firefox 3.6.12
If anyone has a permanent solution please post.

  • I WORK WITH 20+ TABS OPEN, SOMETIMES IF A WINDOW IS ALSO OPEN AND I DON'T CLOSE IT FIRST, MY TABS DON'T REOPEN WHEN I RESTART FIREFOX-HOW CAN I FIND AND REOPEN?

I understand how to set the restore tabs function and have done so. Usually my tabs reopen when I restart, but every once in a while if I have other windows (not tabs) open, and I forget to close them all first, before I close my main window, then when I reopen, my tabs are gone. I have gone to History and I can see the Restore Previous Session and Restore Closed Tabs commands, but they are not highlighted and they don't work. Please advise

Try using the Firefox button > Exit when you go to close Firefox, that should save all your open windows / tabs.

I was having the same problem.... But I keep forgetting that when you upgrade firefox... or it updates automatically... you need to right click on the firefox start up icon, go into properties, click on the compatibilities tab, and put a check in the "Run This Program As An Administrator" box, then hit apply. Start Firefox, and it should work OK. Problem is...each time you upgrade firefox and/or I think Adobe flash... you need to make sure that box is checked. This is on Firefox 15.0.1 with Adobe Flash 11.4.402.278 all up to date, Windows 7 64bit. If Firefox has Adobe flash add-on, it needs to run in admin mode or it will crash.

    Hello Brian.
You don't need to restart your computer to open Firefox again: you just need to close it manually through your application manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC in Processes tab). Anyway, hopefully this support article is what you need:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs
What's probably happening is that you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

Sometimes when I close Firefox and try to open it in few moments it shows me message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." However, I haven't opened any additional Firefox related programs, and previous Firefox is closed. First I though it is because of my computer, but then I discovered that other people have the same problem as well

    Hi Andis.
First of all, this is completely normal behavior, although it's a bit irritating, I know. What happens is that when you close Firefox, despite the window disappearing right there and then, Firefox keeps running for a little bit until the whole closing procedure is completed. This can take a fraction of a second on fast computers, or can take a few seconds on slow computers or when Firefox is storing a large session (if you save your tabs). All you have to do is wait a bit until Firefox closes, and then open it again.
To see if it's still running, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and then, under the Processes tab, you can see if firefox.exe is still there. If it's taking an unusual amount of time to close (which happens very rarely, and only if the browser freezes on exit), you can force the application to terminate from this application (task manager).
Firefox 4.0 will reduce by 97% the time it takes firefox.exe to close, so this problem will be basically erased for Firefox's next version.
Until then, I can recommend you this extension, which helps you restart your browser more easily and without bothering about closing times:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3559/
    Hopefully this will help.
