When I select the firefox icon to open the brower, the round cursor is flashing and jumping instead of twirling steadily like it used to. What is wrong?

I'm not sure how to tell which Firefox version I have, but it was running smoothly before. Now when I click the Firefox icon in the task bar, to open the browser, the round cursor jumps and flicks on and off. Firefox does come on, but it seems like something is wrong. What is wrong that it is doing this?

That is is always a problem when you are using multiple profiles and Firefox isn't running.
It might work if no profile is selected (i.e. marked as Default=1 in profiles.ini). 
You can use desktop shortcut that open with a specific profile (-P "profile"). 
There is also a setting in the Profile Manager (Don't ask at startup).

I would open a guest account and see if the problem persist in this new enviroment.
Boot into Safe Boot Mode and see if the problem is present, this turns off third party plug-in's and extentions.
This will give us something to go on and recommend the next step.

Just to make sure you can get started in Firefox Safe Mode - Hold the Shift key down as you double click on the Firefox icon, ignore the page that opens and Continue. Firefox isn't the only thing that has been updated and new conflicts and culprits can emerge.
I would also recommend a search of your computer to make sure no residue of "Conduit" remains.

Rather than use favorites, I like to drag the icon in the address bar to the desktop or a folder to create a shortcut. In my older computers the icon in the shortcut was the same as the icon in the address bar. in my new Win 7 computer the icon is changed to a Firefox icon. How can I prevent the icon from being changed?

If you drag a link or favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create an internet shortcut then that shortcut gets the icon of the default browser.
If you want a different icon (favicon) then you have to assign that icon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties).
You can usually get the favicon if you append "favicon.ico" to the main domain of a website (e.g. http://www.mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder or see if you can find it in "Tools > Page Info > Media".

I have a lot of wasted space at the top of my laptop screen, because the Firefox toolbars take a line for each. Is it possible to combine them on one line, like you used to be able to do in MS Word, e.g. ?

My new laptop screen is very wide, but proportionately not so high. When running Firefox, Web pages are forced down the screen by the toolbars, so that I can't see the whole page without scrolling down. If I could combine / arrange the toolbars on one, or at least fewer, lines, the Web pages wouldn't get shunted down as much.

As far as the Site Advisor add-on - with add-on Toolbars your results will vary depending upon the Toolbar add-on. Some Toolbar developers do a minimal job and their product isn't as customizable to the extent that Firefox provides for; where other Toolbar add-ons were done the "right way" and they are as customizable as the default Firefox Toolbars.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

This problem appeared, seemingly out of the blue. Since then, I've downloaded the newest version, and restarted my computer. The problem persists. I'm wondering if Apple is blocking it, so that I have to use Safari, where all of their advertising is.

In any case, you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

I had this problem. Re-instal Firefox. After you drag the Firefox icon in to the Applications icon it is going to ask you if you're sure that you want to replace the version that's there - say yes. Then go down to your dock and remove the Firefox icon - drag it off the dock so it "poof!s" away. You can now put the icon on your dock again from your newly updated version. If that doesn't fix it drag it off the dock again, probably no need to re-update for the third time. Fixed it for me anyway. GL!
