When I shut down the Mac Pro, it restarts

Has anyone run into this issue with their Mac Pro? When I shut down the computer (either via the Ctrl + Option + Cmd + Eject or the Shut Down command from the Apple menu drop down), the Mac Pro will simply restart and take me back to my log-in screen.
At this point, I can hit the shut down button on the login window and it will shutdown, but this is annoying, a waste of time, and unnecessary.
I have tried performing an SMC reset, but it has not resolved this issue.
Specs: Mac Pro (2010)
3.33 GHz 6-Core
(2) 2TB Internal HDD
12GB ram
ATI 5870 graphics card (1GB)

I have noticed the exact same behaviour. It only happens when I have something plugged into one of the front USB ports (example : external HD, USB key)
Apparently the system crashes during the shut down process, and then reboots.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a solution

  • Shutting down my Mac Pro Retina properly?

When I shut down my Mac Pro, I close all apps except the Finder. I've noticed that sometimes when I start up again, the Apple logo and the loading bar don't appear, and when I go into the desktop, the Finder is still open on the folder it was on before I shut it down the last time. But there's still the normal start up sound. I think this is because when I see the screen go black, I close the laptop screen straight away, and it hasn't truly finished shutting down yet. I've been trying to wait for a minute before closing the lid after the screen goes black, and it's been working: the next time I start up my Mac the Apple logo and loading bar appears as usual, and when I get on to the desktop, the Finder isn't open on anything.
My question is, is it really bad for the Mac if I close the lid before it properly shuts down, and I leave it in a kind of limbo state before I start it up next time? Because sometimes I'm in a hurry and I don't have time to wait a minute before closing the lid.

    Hello animefan4eva,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you were trying to shut down the computer but closed the lid befor it finished. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Does not start, but when I shut down the computer then the browser shows up right before sytem shuts down.

I am having problems with Firefox. When I click on the shortcut, or the .exe file nothing happens. I check task manager to see if it is running and it does not show Firefox is running.
But when I shut down the computer then the browser shows up right before the computer shuts down. I have tried starting the browser in safe mode and the same thing happens. I cannot give any troubleshooting info because the browser is not visible for me to click on help or any other button.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the [[Uninstall Firefox from your computer#w_uninstall-firefox|Uninstall Firefox]] article.
'''IMPORTANT:''' On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do '''not''' check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox [[Profiles|user profile data]] will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
    * '''(On 32-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
    * '''(On 64-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox''
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the '''Program Files''' folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the '''Program Files (x86)''' folder.
#Look for a '''Mozilla Firefox''' folder. If you find one, right-click it and select ''Delete'' and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • Is it possible to shut down the MAC automatically while being in sleeping mode?

    Dear all,
on my MacPro I use a setting that after 30 minutes of inactivity, the machine moves into sleeping mode. That works well.
Additionally I'm using a setup within the energy saving section, that the Mac should shut down every day at 10:00 pm and start or wake up every day at 07:00 am.
But it seems, that, if the Mac is in sleeping mode at 10:00 pm, he cannot shut down.
Does anyone has the same experience and/or knows any help?
    Thanks in advance - helee29

    Dear Martin,
    Thanks for reply.
I checked the logs as mentioned, but honesly saying I'm not experienced enough to understand all this notices.
What I found out in the meantime by testing (try and error) is:
    - if the Mac is in working mode (just the screensaver is working) the automatic shut down and restart to set times works perfectly.
    - if the Mac is in sleeping mode, it doesn't shut down automatically at the set time, but makes an automatic restart at the set time
Ergo there is a problem to shut down the Mac automatically while in sleeping mode, but I still don't know what it is.

    As cbs20 says...
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

  • Sleep or Shut Down with Mac Pro RAID Card?

I'll be gone for a four-day weekend trip, which is longer than the 72 hours claimed for the Mac Pro RAID Card battery. If I shut down and come back four days later, the battery will presumably be discharged. What will happen when I restart?
Asked another way ... is 72 hours the maximum amount of time that the computer should be shut down or do I simply restart and wait for the battery to recharge and the write caches to be re-enabled?
The FAQ for the Mac Pro RAID Card http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1346 talks around this issue, but doesn't say whether it is a good or bad idea to allow the battery to discharge for "... any length of time." Please review the appended excerpt from the FAQ and advise on whether I should sleep or shut down.
    Regards,
    iPhoton
Question: Why does RAID Utility show a yellow light and report the status "Write cache disabled"?
Answer: The write cache is disabled automatically so data cannot be written to RAID volumes when the battery charge is not sufficient to back up cached data for 72 hours. This message is normally encountered when a RAID Card is used for the first time, when the battery enters a conditioning cycle once every three months, or when a computer with a RAID Card installed is shut down for any length of time.
If your RAID card's firmware is M-2.0.3.3 or later, or E-1.2.2.4 or later, you can use RAID Utility to force-enable the write cache while the battery conditions itself. Warning: If you enable the write caches before the battery is fully charged, you might lose some data if the power to your computer is interrupted.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my message. I did a proper backup and normal shut down on Wednesday night and restarted on Monday morning. That was over 100 hours later and certainly more than the battery is specified (72 hours).
When I restarted on Monday morning I noticed ... no change! The battery was fully charged according to the RAID Utility, I received no warning messages, there were no new events in the RAID Utility log ... it's as if the extended shutdown never occurred.
So, an extended shutdown appears not to be a problem and I won't worry about it again, not even on my next extended shutdown for three weeks at the end of the year.
    Regards,
    iPhoton

  • Should I eject external drives when I shut down my Mac?

    Hello to all,
This might be a very elementary question to some, but I trust I will be given the proper answer. I have been using my Mac for nearly a year and I have not been ejecting my external drive/s once a day's work is over. I use the drop down menu to either put the Mac to sleep or shut it down. I allow the power to be on for the multi-socket spike from which my Mac and my drives get their power. Is this right or wrong? Any guidance in this matter will be appreciated.

    baltwo wrote:
FWIW, I never sleep desktop machines or their HDs, only their displays, and run 24/7, but do power down ext HDs and printers, since they're seldom used.
Hello and thanks baltwo. Sorry for this apparent delay in responding to your reply, reason being I did not have much time to sit on my Mac on account of the Festival of Peace being conducted here in Hyderabad where I stay. Am having a blessed time here attending the meetings.
Your reply has been worded precisley and I trust you are saying this:
You do not shut down or put your Mac to sleep, but put the display to sleep; and that you switch of the power to your ext drives and printers. Am I right?
I have with me a Buffalo thunderbolt [1 TB], a 2 TB, LaCie [2 TB] and 2 Seagate [2 TB] external drives. I was in the habit of having these drives mounted even though when I had no need of all of them. The Apple technician who had come to remove the RAM [see above] informed me that it was not a good thing to have all the drives connected at the same time. Since then I am trying to keep only those drives for which I had need mounted.
The thunderbolt has no external power supply and hence, if I have no need of its services, I have to eject it and then unplug it from the back of the Mac. The LaCie has a power switch conveniently located on the drive itself and ejecting it and unpowering it should be easy. For the Seagate drives, after ejecting them, I need to remove the power adapters from the power spike. At the end of the day, when one is tired, all these different processes may be cumbersome to me, but I would not mind adopting it if I could be instructed as to how this method of yours scores over the other method in which one shuts down the computer. My next thanks is awaiting you!
    Cheers and have agreat day.

  • Prevent Certain Users From Shutting Down the Mac

    Hello,
I have a group of Mac Minis which are secured in an equipment rack. When someone shuts the computer off, the rack has to be moved and the Mac powered-on, manually. This is not as easy as it may seem. Is there a way to remove the "Shutdown" item from the Apple menu. I need the "Logoff" and "Reboot" the options to still be available. I do nt have an OS X server, from which to project these settings from Workgroup Manager. Is there some .plist I can edit, or permission I can change?
    Thanks

Not possible without hacking the system and even then it is not foolproof. If you Google something like mac os x disable shutdown you'll get an idea of the situation.
And if you could remove the command from the Apple menu there is still the key combination to deal with.
If this is a social problem, users mistakenly shutting down the system then maybe education would be a better approach to take.
If it is willful or the inconvenience of this being done is very great then maybe you should suggest getting the serve for $20 just to have the ability to handle this.
    regards
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - it does appear that tinkertool says it does address the 'shutdown option in the finder'. Interesting to see if this is the Apple menu. Worth a shot

  • Hey, when I shut down the computer and close it before it does so, the...

light on the button for opening the screen (middle front of closed laptop) stays on.
However if I shut down and wait for the screen to go black before closing it the light does not come on. Needless to say I do not want that light there as if I shut down, close it, and walk away for a day I can only assume some battery is being taken.
I would like to be able to go the apple, go to shut down, click shut down, and then close it and not have to worry, albeit a minor concern to some.
Thanks a lot for any assistance!

    Hi-
If you do not wait for the computer to shut down fully (when the screen goes off), and close the screen, it will go into sleep mode.
The light will on the front of the computer will fade in and out indicating sleep mode.
Thas hapened to me a few times, and I realized that it only takes about 5 or 10 seconds to shut down fully. Wait for the screen to go dark and you shouldn't have a problem!
