How can I retrieve photos when it says my cloud and iTunes backups are empty or not backed up?

When I tried my cloud, there was nothing. I would get notifications that my cloud was full, but I thought there would at least be some photos in there. When I tried to restore a back up, it said the last time was two years ago. I thought when you're on wifi, it automatically backs up. I've charged my iPhone into my Macbook a bunch of times, so something should have backed up. Is there any hope for my photos?

Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

Silly question first... when "deleting duplicates", did you delete the picturs or music folders? :}
Are the "Previous system" folders still there? Are the photos/music inside the recent Previous folder?
Have you tried doing a search for the files?
Do you have a new account set up, that you are now signed in to, rather than your old account?

I noticed that this message refers to iOS 6.0.1, even though I want to update to 6.1. It is possible that, a few weeks ago, I may have downloaded but not installed v 6.0.1.

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.

It sounds a lot like your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it prior to your trying to update it.
If that is the case, it is nowpermanently bricked.

If you are having an issue with updating your iPhone, try it through a different method like in iTunes or through software update on your iPhone in settings. If that does not work then follow the steps in the article below to force a restore on your iPhone. Hmm, well... iTunes trys to activate your iPod using the Apple server to make sure you have bought it legit.
Two things come into my mind:
1) Your iTunes can't access the internet.
2) Apples activation servers are down.
That's just my cents, maybe anyone else has an idea.

Go to iTunes.com, then click on Download iTunes on the top right area, then on the next screen make sure it states iTunes 11.1 on the left side and email is not necessary then click on download now in the blue button. Issue should be resolved
