Each time you connect your iPhone to iTunes, you need to eject it before closing iTunes by clicking on the little "eject" icon shown in iTunes. It seems that sometime in the past, you did not do that.
I'm not sure how to undo the previously done damage, but maybe a reboot of your Mac would help.

Exactly the same problem. But it gets worse. iTunes has now disappeared from my list of installed programs so I can't uninstall anyway. Appalling problem. This update clearly didn't get proper testing before release.
In answer to your question about your song library, I seem to remember uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes a few years ago and the uninstall didn't remove the library then - I can't see why it would. Of course there have been a lot of updates since then, so it is definitely worth asking the question. Personally, I would be inclined to make a copy (if you have the space) of the iTunes folder just to be sure.
I certainly hope they get this fixed soon. I use iTunes mainly for podcasts on my iPod and I can't download anything right now.

Help Plz--I get an error message when I try and open iTunes

My PC crashed and I had to reboot to factory start ups. Luckily, it kept all my files including my iTunes library. The problem is that everytime I try to open iTunes I get a message saying iTunes had encountered a problem and needs to close. I have Lightroom 5 installed on my iMac which I downloaded (uploaded?) to my MacBook Air (via wi-fi) but unlike the iMac, I'm unable to use the program on the MacBook Air. When I open the program on the iMac and click 'file', (as people using the program would know) there are 21 options - import pics, export, etc, etc - however, in the version on the MacBook Air, opening 'file' gives me four options - New Catalogue, Open Catalogue, Page Setup and Printer - and with that comes the pop-up message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules". Any ideas please?

A forum thread from 3 years ago talking about LR 1.x which had this problem seems to need permissions fixed or new folders created with the corrected permissions. You might try doing a repair permissions for your user and/or run LR as an administrator user. I am a PC person so cannot tell you exactly how to do that.

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.
Windows is notorious for having "other" issues that make it unstable, we as volunteers helping others can't always resolve those issues.
After doing the steps above, stand by and others may be able to assist you.

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:

You may be required to boot into safe mode to complete the folder deletion process.
