    The first time I attempted to install ML was on a late 2011 MBP.  It ran for three minutes then gave me the error message: Could not install OSX due to an unexpected error.  I was using the original ML install app, not a USB or other drive.  
    After a couple of restarts wiht the same result I saw a message to the effect that the install was trying to close open apps.  I closed apps  manually a few times to no avail.  I shut down instead of restarting then booted into Safe mode (hold down the shift key when starting) and that did it.  The install went smoothly after that. 
    I since installed ML in two iMacs using a cloned copy of the install app on a USB drive.  This time I shut down the computers and booted into Safe Mode first and there were no problems. 
    I don't know if this issue is the one causing you these problems but it is a simple enough solution to try.

    Open the Mac App Store on the other Mac and in the Quick Links sign into your account. See if the Mountain Lion purchase is among hidden apps in the iCloud area of your account info.

    SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
    If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

    The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
    Power down.  Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore. 
    No trouble at all once I did this.

    My Mountain Lion install failed for the following reason:
    OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created.
    The message went on:

    The page is about a different failure, but I'm assuming the reason for my failure is this one:
    The disk has a non-standard Boot Camp partition setup, in which further partitioning was performed after running Boot Camp Assistant, or the configuration that Boot Camp Assistant created was manually modified.
    The cure involves erasing the entire HD and starting from scratch, which in my case would involve backing up both the Mac and Windows sides, setting up Boot Camp again, reinstalling Windows XP and recovering everything from backups on both sides. I would rather not have Mountain Lion than go through all that, and I think it's unfair for Apple to expect me to.
    Because I don't recall doing anything off-piste when I set up Boot Camp in the first place (for a start, I'm not clever enough), I consider this episode an inadequacy in the Mountain Lion installer. As I won't be using the download, is it possible to get my money back?

    If that doesn't help, try the following:
    Disable anti virus software.
    Turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security (or Security & Privacy) > Firewall
    If that doesn't help, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/Cache.db
    Click Go
    Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Now here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
    Move these files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.appstore.plist
    com.apple.storeagent.pllist
    Now here:
    ~/Library/Cookies
    Click Go
    Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
    Empty the Trash, try the App Store.

    I'm interested to know because the app store app updated some software like the iWork package and a few others and advised me to install Mountain Lion to use the new features. Will Mountain Lion install at all? Will it run on my machine at all? Will I just not be able to use some of the new features?
    Can I try it out by installing on an external drive to see what happens?

    I was looking through our documentation about things you may be able to do to troubleshoot the issue. Here is an article about troubleshooting an issue with softare on the Mac named Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
    From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
    Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
    Give the new user a name and short name.
    Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
    Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
    Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
    Click OK, or quit System Preferences.

    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

    Ok i currently have Lion on my early 2011 15" MBP. When i try to install Mountain Lion to my mac HD it keeps telling me I cannot because its used for time machine backups.     If you double-click on your hard drive icon the Backups.backupd folder should be on the root level of your drive. Sometimes OS X gets confused and incorrectly puts a Backups.backupd folder on your hard drive. That folder should only appear on a drive used for Time Machine
    If you can't find the Backups.backupd folder try using the free EasyFind with both Package Contents and Invisible Files & Folders checked. Search for "Backups.backupd" without the quotes on your hard drive (default selection), not your Time Machine drive. Right-click on the search result and choose to Reveal in Finder. Click on the link that kisuke3 provided and follow those directions
    If you can't find a Backups.backupd folder anywhere try booting into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key right after you hear the startup chime. Keep holding the Shift key down until you see the Apple Logo. The progress bar that appears indicates the progress of the file check that Safe Mode automatically does. Give it time to finish.
    Reboot normally and see if the ML installer will work. If it does wait until Spotlight is finishing indexing before turning Time Machine back on.

    Help! I just got a new HDD for my macbook pro 15 in mid 2009. Got a WD 750 GB 5400rpm. I'm trying to install mountain lion but it won't let me. I formated the new HDD and partitioned correctly. Can someone give me a solution to install Mountain Lion on my new HDD? I've tried LionDiskMaker, bootable usb drive, and nothings seems to work. I also tried to install Snow Leopard Intall DVD and the DVD that came with my laptop when they get spit out! Help! Thanks!

    -Got a USB enclosure to connect the HDD to laptop

    -Did no installed yet

    -Rebooted and holding OPT key and selected the Mountain Lion Bootable USB
    -Disk Utilities>Formated the new HDD, 1 partition, GUID, Journaled, named it Macintosh HD.
    -Closed Disk Utilities, Installed Mountain Lion
    -Won't install after 10 hrs!
    -Rebooted from Mountain Lion bootable USB
    -Repeated the process.
    -Try to install Mountain Lion
    -Won't Install.
    Help!

    I'm not sure who recommended the Scorpio Blue to you....
    Read HERE and HERE from Western Digital's own forum regarding the Blue Editions on Macbooks.
    In any event, I had my own issues with the Blue Edition in my late 08 Macbook.....Took hours of trying to make it work and no go.  Went with Seagate instead.....
    Try to see if you can get it up and running but don't waste hours if you can't get it to go......If you can replace it with the Scorpio Black or something else - then go for it......
    Trying to save you a lot of fraustration.....Try it for a while and if it's still a no go - replace the drive.
