Hello fjmartin,
It sounds like you are getting this error message when trying to open iTunes. I suggest using the troubleshooting from the following article named:

If the issue persists I would next try the troubleshooting in the following article to help troubleshoot the issue further:

When I try to start iTunes, I get the message "program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computper. Try reinstalling the program." When I try reinstalling, I get the message Error 7 (Windows Error 126)
Can you help me?????Hello Charleen,
It sounds like you are unable to reinstall iTunes because of this error message 7. I recommend the troublehsooting found in the following article that mentions that error named:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
"iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows Error 126)”
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

When I try to reinstall Itunes, I get the message that says "runtime error". What to do?
Try the following user tip:
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates -
I am on Windows 7. Yesterday I ran an iTunes update and today I receive this message when I try to launch iTunes: This copy of iTunes is corrupted and not installed correctly. Please re-install iTunes. I am woried that I have already lost my music and don't want to re-install.
I found this on another discussion board and it really helped, I didn't have to uninstall anything and didn't lose any music
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". -
Help! When I try to down load the above message is what I get. I have uninstalled the last verision as it is giving me an error message also that is not running correctly!

I recently restored to factory settings.I updated iTunes Store account details and change of password on my PC. After that I tried to log on to the Store via my mobile and was confronted with my previous ISP,s log on page requesting password which when entered correctly it didn't recognise. The restoration action solved that particular problem but has now left me with the "error code 4001 problem. Be grateful for solution..
means that apple mobile device service needs to be started try this article to get it turned back on

also, I called apple support and they told me that it may be due to having uninsatlled itunes in the wrong order - but I never uninsatlled itunes. it just stopped working one day. I do recall that I had gotten a message that stated that quicktime had been uninstalled (maybe my 10 yr old had something to do with that). So, i attempted to reinstall itunes and I can't.... there's 3 ipods in the house, my classic, my wife's nano and my 10 yr old's itouch... we've been without itunes for a month now and I really would rather not fork out the $30 that apple wants for phone support. the touch and the classic were purchased last xmas, and the nano was purchased on mother's day - i shouldn't have to pay. Can any of you techies plz help???
Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over. -
I cannot find any obvious restrictions on the computer. In the Control Panel under Set Program Access and Defaults, Enable Access to This Program is checked.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q310049 You receive an error message when you click a hyperlink in Outlook (default browser)

Can't open itunes. Getting the message "error 7 (windows error 126)".
What does this mean? How do I fix this? I was just downloading an update and suddenly I am unable to use itunes. I tried to download directly from their site after that and still won't install correctly. HELP!?
Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

When I try to launch itunes I get an error mesage saying that Apple application support was not found and suggests that I uninstall and re-install it, but that doesn't work
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
Start with the section Install missing components which should address your particular error. Otherwise the steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT) as you start iTunes, then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

When I try to Launch iTunes, I get an error.
When I try to Launch iTunes, I get an error message "The folder "iTunes" is on a Locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". iTunes had been working OK. I uninstalled, and reinstalled on a different drive. Same result. What do I do?

When I try to update itunes, I get the following: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes64.msi in the box below.
This leads me to another dialog box that says: The file .......is not a valid installation package for the product iTunes. Try to find the installation package iTunes64.msi in a folder from which you can install iTunes.
That doesn't work either. What to do?
DeanDownload the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time? -
I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back up on an external hard drive when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file. Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty. Note that I am running Windows 8. Hope this helps!
