When I try to Merge Down a 2d layer on to a 3d object it shuts Photoshop CC 2014 down

Question

I downloaded the trial Photoshop CC 2014 to see if I can wrap a 2d image (.png) around a 3d object(.stl)  using Merge Down. It works on half the models but crashes and shuts photoshop down the other half. How do I resolve this?
