When I try to open an embedded PDF file (Word doc) I get an error "The program used to create this object is AcroExch.exe. That program is either not installed on your computer, or is corrupt..." I've tried about everything from unchecking
protected mode at startup to removing & reinstalling Adobe. Nothing seems to fix this issue. Any other ideas?
This is happening on Adobe reader 9, 10 & 11 with MS Word 2010 & 2013. I've uninstalled, cleaned & reinstalled Reader 9, 10 & 11, as well as Acrobat 10 Pro & 11 Standard. Removed "Protected mode at startup, and changed
the default program for viewing from reader to Acrobat. This will not go away. It is affecting production at our company.

i appreciate your help with a workaround to get the old bookmarks. that works. however, the problem has morphed from that concern to why adobe reader [the default app.] won't open firefox .sqlite files. is the problem in adobe reader or firefox? also, how can i tell if the places.sqlite file is corrupt?

It sounds like you have a a password-protected PDF. The password was set by the person who encoded it.

The updater wasn't able to update all the files and some were left as older versions.
You need to do a clean reinstall.
If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

* Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Which application are you trying to open the PDF files in? Firefox or Adobe Reader? Or another?
If adobe reader then please make sure that your copy is up to date. You can get the latest version here - http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/
Also I notice that you are using Firefox 19. Unless you have a particular reason to run an old version of Firefox is it much better to keep updated. The latest version is v22. The documents I’m trying to read are already saved on my computer, under various different headings, I know that we have a server, so I only assume these documents are saved on here, as I said before I’m not good with all this techno stuff. I do my work each week ( on a payroll system) and save the documents for each company, they automatically go to the correct place. I never request for them to be saved in a certain place ( well not that I’m aware of) . I then on occasions need to open up this information, it is then that I can’t read or open the documents. Just to say I am having exactly the same issue on my MacBook Air. I can't remember what I did but after this happened a few times, and once I had clicked on the Japanese pop up, I managed to do something that now means I get the pop up in English, saying 'Adobe Reader blocked for this website'. When I click on it it asks me to trust the content and then I get a bar with the text in Japanese. Eventually the pdf does open. However it's very irritating that I have to trust every pdf individually which I never had to do before the latest upgrade, and I don't understand why I get messages in Japanese. Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down. You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.
