When I try to partition my time capsule it won't show up in disc utility. What do I do?

I want to partition my new 2 TB time capsule. I can see it and set it up with time machine just fine but it won't show up in disc utility.

Sorry, it is not possible to partition the Time Capsule disk unless you first crack open the Time Capsule, remove the hard drive, and place it in a separate enclosure.
Unfortunately, this will void the warranty.
Your best bet if you want to reserve a given amount of space on the Time Capsule disk is set up one or more Disk Images using Disk Utility.
Apple really designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups. While it is possible to store other data on the drive, it is not recommended. If at all possible, consider using another USB or Firewire drive for your other data.

My os is 10.8.4. Airport Utility is 6.3. When I try to pull backups, time capsule says: 'The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.'. So I cannot use Time capsule to back up so what gives?

Did you use migration assistant when you set up the computer?
TM will treat this as a different computer and permissions issues can arise from that.
Pondini is the expert on that stuff.. hopefully he can drop in.
But I recommend you read all the FAQ to do with restore.. Q14-17.

  • Partitioning a Time Capsule

Hi ... How do I partition a Time Capsule ?

    Hi Bob,
I opened a thread explaining what I am trying to do with my Time Capsule.  Do you have an idea what is the best way to handle my situation if the TC cannot ?

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • Can you partition the Time Capsule hard drive?

I would like to back up through AirportExtreme 2 different Macs with Time Machine
but obviously I would first need to partition the Time Capsule HD !
Is it possible and how would I go about this? I can't find no infos in the manual...
    Thanks for your help.

First you do not have to partition the drive to backup multiple computers. Each computer creates a separate file for the backup.
Second there is no way (currently) to partition the drive without taking the TC apart, removing the hard drive, putting it in an external drive enclosure, and partitioning it.

  • Time Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.

TIme Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.  Time Machine shows a message such as "Backing up 4MB of 9.00GB" but nothing happens for hours.

Are you really running 10.6.4 OS?
What model TC and what firmware?
    Wireless or wired?
    How is the TC setup?
If TM can work to neither a TC or external hard disk it is more likely the computer is faulty hard disk..
Do a verify of the disk.

  • Partitioning the Time Capsule

I'm sorry if someone already asked these questions. I tried t find the answers but wasn't getting what I needed.
I just bought a 2 TB Time Capsule with the intent of using it for backups, but mostly for an external hard drive. I don't even see the point in getting one so large if you can't use it for external storage. I've been trying to partition the drive using Disk Utility, but it was saying that the amount I was giving the backup (I tried anywhere between 300-600 GB) was too small.
I tried a half and half partition after an initial backup. It said there was an error, but then it went ahead and partitioned it anyways. I keep having problems staying connected to the Time Capsule, and air port utility doesn't find it in the scan many times, and I don't know what the problem is.
I'm willing to wipe the whole thing clean and start over if someone would be able to help me take the steps to set up a 500 GB partition for backups, and the other 1.5 TB for external storage.
    Any ideas?

Well, in skimming through the forums I remember reading something about being able to use disk utility to partition the time capsule, so I tried that from a couple different angles.
One thing to keep in mind here is that you cannot partition the TC's internal hard drive with Disk Utility. Instead you can use the Disk Utility to create a Disk Image (.dmg) on this drive which you can mount on your Mac's desktop and treat pretty much like a network drive. It is NOT a true partition. The advantage of this option is that you don't have to remove the TC's drive. The major drawback is that you will not be able to mount this Disk Image from Windows.
If you really want to partition the drive, it will have to be removed. A drive caddy (they go by different names) is basically an adapter that you "plug in" a raw drive in one end and it connects to your computer with USB. However, you need to also be aware removing the drive will void the warranty. In this configuration, the Disk Utility can actually partition the drive.

Every time I plug in my iPhone to my computer it opens up to my PC instead of iTunes. When I try to connect my phone to iTunes the device button doesn't appear. What do I do?

It is opening up your computer generally because there are photos in the camera roll to prompt you to import them to the computer as you would a digital camera.

  • Dropouts between every song since itunes 12 on OS 10.10 when using a library in a Time Capsule

Since using iTunes 12 on Yosemite I have constant dropouts between every song when having my library on a time capsule. I know the TC is in some kind of energy saving mode after a couple of minutes (why can't I change the length of that?) but the thing is: it wasn't a problem under Mavericks using iTunes 11.x.
Anyone having the same problem and/or a solution for that?

    1. No, undelete is not a feature of the Mac OS. That's handled by back up apps.
    2. Recovery Software will not get your Library back. The best you can hope to do is to get your original photos back. When a recovery app scans the disk it will find many files of the same name. In every case elect to recover the largest file size - that has the best chance of being the original
    3. Yes you can restore from Time Machine to another location
    4. If you don't trust Time Machine then why are you using one of the (very many) alternative apps?

You'll have to select the entire external hard drive by the hardware name itself and then apply a new partition table to it under the Partition tab of Disk Utility. Erase and format the drive.

When I try to set up Time Machine, there are no back up disks displayed.  Therefore, I cannot turn on Time Machine.  How can I fix this?

Thanks - let it finish, but zero out data is unnecessary. That option is intended to thoroughly erase previously recorded data so that it cannot be recovered without sophisticated data recovery techniques.
Case sensitive is OK but I suggest you simply select Mac OS X Extended since "case sensitive" may complicate things for you in the future, should it be necessary to restore files to a case-ignorant volume.
Once it finishes, make sure it appears as a selectable option in Time Machine. If it does your problems are solved, but consider using Disk Utility and reformatting it. This time don't worry about zeroing unused space, and select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). It will only take a few seconds this time.
For a more thorough description read Apple Support Communites contributor Pondini's FAQ: http://pondini.org/TM/5.html Read the pink box regarding the subject of case sensitivity.

  • Can i partition the time capsule so i can use it as a server as well?

can i partition the time capsule so i can use it as a server as well?

In order to partition the Time Capsule, you would have to open up the Time Capsule case, pull the hard drive, install it in a separate enclosure, connect the enclosure directly to your Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the partitioning operation.
Then, you have to reverse the entire process to install the drive back in the Time Capsule.
In addition to being a lot of work, something like this will void the warranty on the Time Capsule.
Niel's suggestion of creaing a disk image on the Time Capsule drive to reserve a given amount of space would be by far the easiest way to accomplish things.
