When i try to restart firefox after i have closed it i get a message that firefox is still running Have to restart pc most of the time. Is a big wast of time.So have been using internet explorer most of the time
I must close firefox to run a program called c cleaner to remove unused items the browser saves on the computer . In order to clean up items on firefox i must shut firefox down then have the problem when i try to restart firefox after the the unused items are removed as the pc thinks firefox is still running. Have to reboot to start firefox. Other browsers are normal with no problems
I have sometimes seen Firefox give such a message, and do not know the reason for this. As you mention Internet Explorer I assume you are using a Windows machine.
Try using task manager to stop the firefox program.
Shortcut keys [Ctrl][alt][del] in XP, all pressed together will get task manager.
Another method is in Start -> Run keying in the command "Taskmgr" and hit Return
Once TaskManager is showing click the process tab and look for "firefox.exe", right click on it and use "end process" that should stop Firefox without you needing to restart the computer.
I am not sure why you need to use'' "c cleaner to remove unused items the browser saves on the computer "''
Tools -> clear recent history, may help

I just figured out a solution. I connected my ipod to my computer, went to the 'info' tab on the menu for my ipod. I checked 'Sync Mail Accounts', which were greyed out until I selected them. That connected me to the Cloud and everything went back to normal. Hope this helps someone else!

I've been on it a bunch lately, plus I tend to watch a lot of movies, back to back, streaming, from Netflix. My laptop was hacked so badly that it was taken back to factory settings and I now use Glary Utilities and CCleaner every two weeks. I use AVG as antivirus. Monthly I run Glary, CCleaner, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Disk Cleanup and Dfrag.
I haven't given my computer a break to breathe. I've been updating my information, like I said already, on all those websites, which is like neverending.
I do have to use Internet Explorer for some things, but Firefox has actually been staying open on my system a lot more than Internet Explorer has been crashing. And I swear, there are no indicators to me, other than opening up Task Manager, I suppose, and I haven't done that, that Firefox is staying open. It truly is looking totally closed. Yet my laptop is giving me this weird message stating that it isn't, so I click Restart, and open it again, then go on my merry way with my work in Firefox.
I have no idea how to tell if my plug-ins are old or not cooperating with my current, updated version of Firefox.
Can somebody dummy their answer down, please? I will give you more details if you ask for them. I don't know what other details to give. I did read through the other options, and this is what fit me the best, I thought. Who knows. Thanks, TigerstripeThe proper way to close Firefox is through the File menu "Exit" or the equivalent with the Firefox button.

Firefox already running, to properly shutdown Firefox when closing the last window use File → Exit/Quit (or Firefox button → Exit). Closing Firefox with the [X] in the upper right corner closes the window ("Ctrl+W") but that does not necessarily close Firefox if it has subtasks running. If you want to close and reopen Firefox use the "Restart" within Add-ons if you made a change requiring a restart, or install "[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/ Restartless Restart]" ("Ctrl+Alt+R") which will allow you to take Firefox down and restart without having to check the Windows Task Manager to see if Firefox first actually ended. I have a MacBook Pro and using Mountain Lion. Adobe automatically updated flashplayer and that wouldn't allow me to use my camera with skype. I uninstalled flashplayer but cannot install an older version, when I try I get, "Safari can't open the "playerglobal11_4.swc" because no available application can open it."
First repair permissions and restart your computer. Reinstall the latest version of flash player. Again repair permissions and restart your computer.

The question pretty much details my problem. I have to force a shutdown of Firefox and reboot to be able to browse again.

The problems I've had with Firefox are numerous. It keeps running in the background and won't reopen. I have to go to the task manager and close it manually. Now, it won't load my iGoogle homepage. I was loading fine, earlier but now won't. My other browsers work fine. There are just too many bugs here.

After I close Firefox I am unable to reopen, I get a message that I can't reopen until I close it, but it is already closed. This is happening almost every time I close Firefox. I have to restart my computer in order to open Firefox.

When I try to start Firefox, I get a message that it is already running, but not responding and that I should close it before trying to run another Firefox. But I cannot find a way to close Firefox program that is not running as far as I can see. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, but that did not work. I've tried various other things, but no luck. I thought programs should stop when the computer is turned off, but that didn't work either.
How are you opening the Profile Manager?

Every time I restart the computer and try to install firefox the same message keeps appearing. I attempted to uninstall the earlier version of firefox using "programs and features" in windows but the same message came up and thus I was unable to uninstall using that method. I have used a third party uninstall program which appeared to delete all traces of firefox including registry entries but I still have the same problem.
I am now in the position of not being able to load any version of firefox. HELPSame problem here. I installed version 4.0, then removed it and tried to install 3.6. Now no version Firefox will not install. I keep getting a message that I have to restart my computer in order for updates to a previous version can be installed.

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
Thank you. -
