And if the application is hung for some reason and refuses to quit, Force Quit it by pressing Option-Command-Esc, selecting it from the list and clicking on the button.

If you end up having to remove and reinstall iTunes and AMDS, make sure to follow the steps closely, including the order in which you uninstall.

Restart and see if that solves your issue.

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

My apple version 10.6.8, crashes when I try to shut down

That virus checker will be interfering with everything you do, I would recommend removing it straight away.
App cleaner is a free utility that will remove all of the library files related to the virus checker: http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/
Also, by starting up in Verbose mode, you will be able to see what is happening when you start up/shut down: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1492

Just hold down the power button for about ten seconds and the machine will turn off.
I'm not sure how fast your Internet speed is but my Mavericks downloads usually only take about 20-25 minutes for a 5.33GB file.
No telling what will be waiting for your when you power back on... call back if you can't login to your computer.

I had a similar problem myself. This is what helped me.
I went to the App store app, scrolled to the bottom, logged out of the account, re logged in with my Apple ID. Then went back to app updates. Once I put in my ID password all was fine.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.

Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

Are you using the virtual keyboard to input your password and you cannot see/find the characters you need on that keyboard?
Or are you trying to use a bluetooth keyboard and pressing the printed key does not produce the right character?

Am I able to use Microsoft Office when i switch users on my Macbook Air? I can find the applications, Excel Word etc, but when I try to open them it keeps taking me to a software update for Microsoft Office. Any tips on what to do???

I use 2 accounts, one for work and one for personal.
I have Microsoft Office, in my applications, and I can find it in my work user account, but when I try to open it, it keeps doing start up for Auto updates. and wont open the application. It works fine in my personal (Admin) account which is where I did migration when I bought the laptop. And I've looked on here for similar problems, and everyone says if it's in your applications it should work, but I can't open mine.
Anyone know what I can do?

Go to the main Library folder and look for a folder called Application Support / Microsoft.
There are a few folders in there, and you may have to do some digging. In one of them (mine is called MAU2.0), there should be a file called Microsoft Autoupdate. Open it.
It looks like this:
check the button for manual updates.
That should let you open the apps without triggering an automatic update.

2 GB of RAM is pretty tight. I imagine that's at the very low end of what Yosemite wants, which could slow things down.
As far as scroll direction, you can always change it in the trackpad settings. Unsure why it got flipped, but you can fix it in about 5 seconds. Choose "natural" (or don't) depending on how you like it.
