When I try to watch my movie on iTunes it doesn't play.

When I click on it, it doesnt do anything! Help!!

Left (or two fingers click) click on the file and select "Get Info".
Then select the tab called "Summary"
Under it please see the section "Kind" and tell us what file format it is...
iTunes 11 Can play the following video file formats:
MPEG-4 video file, Protected MPEG-4 video file, .mp4, .mov, among others.
But take notice that your file will always be converted to MPEG-4 (.mp4) when importing to the iTunes Library
If your video file is: .wma or .avi you might experience some problems. If this is the case, I recommend you to convert your file to MPEG-4 (.mp4) in order to play it.
I use iSkysoft Video Converter for that purpose, but there are alternative apps to convert video files; like: SmartConverter or Divx Converter.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general. You should also try restarting your router.

Screen freezes when I try to watch downloaded movie

I downloaded a rented movie and when I go to watch it the screen freezes. No controls come up or anything. No part of the page responds- not the minimize, close out, etc functionality is gone.
Really the problem started when I downloaded a newer version of ITunes. I downloaded another movie that I couldn't watch since the sound wouldn't work. I was able to watch other DVDs in my laptop, so the problem is with Itunes only. Since that time, i wanted to see if I couldn't correct the problem by downloading Itunes again and then I downloaded Quicktime again- based on a recommendation I saw somewhere on the Apple support site. I also downloaded a TV show to test out my changes. Eventually after a while the show worked and actually still works, but this movie won't even play. This is the worst problem I've had so far.

HT1349 I rented a movie and have been unable to play. iTunes software just hangs when I try to watch the movie.

i use iTunes on my PC running windows 7. I rented "Get him to the geek" and have been unable to play it fully. iTunes locks up a the task manager show its not responding (iTunes). I have tryed reloading it everything I can think of without success. I'm done now I can't spend all this time and energy to watch a movie. I really don't believe I should have pay for it as well.

I have had this identical issue (on an Apple TV3) and was helped by Apple Support who guided me to go to the Settings Menu on the Apple TV and did a RESET. You will need to re connect to your WIFI and your iTunes account (passwords etc).

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive. If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down. You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes. Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked. You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library. iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
Shouldn't have any more problems...

I downloaded a movie earlier today from itunes to my laptop but the movie and screen are freezing regularly, then catching up with itself, only for it to happen again 20 secs later. I've checked with my broadband provider and they advise that my speed is 17mps. Help!!

I would start by turning home sharing off in iTunes and then turning it back on. Next I would stop sharing on the apple TV and share again.
Make sure the mac that hosts iTunes is awake when the apple TV tries to connect.
