When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the login icons which I then choose and log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After about a minute the Apple icon turns into a prohibited icon. However, if I log in under the guest icon, I can access the wifi and get to Safari. I really don't know what to do next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.

Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.

  • When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.  Not sure how to fix this.

When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.
I'm not sure what to do, I did not recieve a cd with my mac to boot it up (I ordered it online).
Also I can't find my harware serial number (I've tried many times to input what I thought it may be from my receipt).  I saw that I need this number to contact apple support, my 90 day complimentary support is still valid so I wish to contact them.
I don't know much about apple products as this is my first apple computer so any information is helpful.

Hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your iMac to get the Boot Selection screen.
From that choose to boot into OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset your OSX to be the default.
The new iMacs have OSX 10.7 Lion preinstalled and don't come with any CD/DVD anymore.
Instead OSX Lion includes a new feature called "Lion Recovery".
Have a read here About Lion Recovery

You'll have to provide more information if you want a reasonable answer to your problem.
    Model
    Operating System
Do you have your original install disks?
Try inserting disk and start machine while holding "C"
    Does it startup?

  • When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

Not sure what a struggling light bulb sounds like. It is very hard to describe sounds sometimes. Is it an electrical buzzing or crackling sound? Does the computer still startup normally after the sound? You have Lion so I wonder if it is a new iMac. If so, call AppleCare.

  • When I turn on my IMac it can not find the my wireless network automatically, I have select it manually, even with apple support problem still exist.

When I turn on my Imac it can not find my wireless network automacally, I have to seclect it manually.  Apple support has not been apple to find the problem.  I also have an MacBook Pro and have no problem with this laptop finding my network everytime.  Does anyone else have this problem. This problem started within the last month.

Lot's of people reporting Wifi problems with 10.7.4, but some things to try...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • How do you silence the opening chord when you turn on the iMac?

How do you silence the opening chord when you turn on the iMac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I do not recommend you to disable the startup sound. It indicates hardware problems when your computer is not working correctly, so it is important to leave it turned on. What you can do is to reduce the volume in OS X.
Anyway, if you want to disable the startup sound, the easiest way is to turn off the volume in OS X.

  • Fan comes on when I turn on the iMac

When I turn on the iMac, a fan comes on. It doesn't turn off. What does this mean

It might mean a lot of things: from a damaged sensor to a SMC problem. First, try resetting the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 This should solve the problem if it's related to a problem with SMC settings.
If it doesn't work, it's possible that a sensor is damaged. To make sure of it, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US After starting in Apple Hardware Test, choose your language, mark the option to use extended mode (important) and start the test. If you see an error at the end of the test, copy it here

  • When I turn on my IMAC I get the white screen and it won't start

I was working on my IMAC and it froze, so I restarted it a couple of times.  It is now not restarting and I get a white screen and spinning circle.  What can I do to get the computer to start up or do I need to take it in to the Apple store.

First, use Disk Utility to repair the drive and permissions. Second, reinstall OS X. This will require booting from an installer DVD or the Internet.
Because you have not provided any information about the exact model you have nor version of OS X installed, I cannot provide more information.
