Do what you are being told. Plug the phone into a computer running iTunes and restore the phone.

I turned on the ipad and plugged it up, when I touched the button on the bottom, it flashed as if the screen was coming up, but instead it scrolled grey and white lines, halfway across the screen and has been doing so for about an hour now. You might connect the iPad to its wall charger for half an hour, to be sure there is enough juice to get started.
That sounds like an internal problem, as you suspect. If you can show it to an Apple Store Genius, you may get a replacement on the spot.
If there is no Apple Store near you, look for an Apple Authorized Repair Center. There may be one in your city. I do not know how long it would take, or if a "loaner" would be available. Whether they can fix it on site would depend on what the problem is. <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>
One thing you can try is to reset (reboot) the iPad. Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow. If it works, the iPad will restart after a couple of minutes. Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

They made an error with the update in only listing it as compatible with Firefox 4.0, so they will not install on Firefox 4.0.1 and subsequent Firefox security updates. What generation is your iPod? My sister's 2g/3g(I'm not sure which) was doing something similar, but it would put a different graphic on the screen every time. We took it in to the apple store and they didn't determine what it was. One thing they said to try was to restore it and gradually add content on to see if it's an app or something loaded on it. If that doesn't work then they said it's probably something in the software or firmware. They gave her the option of getting one exactly like the one she had or getting the new one like I have. She ended up getting the new one on sale at target.

My iPad has gone through numerous airport screen devices with no problems. I also use the Go Go in flight Wi-Fi service when flying. My iPad has shown no ill effects.
I suspect something may have happened to your iPad. Perhaps it was dropped while in the tray or a hardware malfunction happened at the same time. If you can duplicate the problem, or if it recurring, make an appointment at an Apple store for a consultation. Back up your iPad before going to the store.
