When I type a web address into the main bar, it takes me to search results rather than to the website as in Firefox 3. What can I do here?

As stated above, when I would enter a web address in the main bar at the top of Firefox, the browser would go directly to that website (e.g., nytimes, or pcmag, etc...).
Now it goes to a search results page, where I have to click on NY Times, or PC Mag, to get to the website. It is a two-step process instead of one!

hello, enter '''about:config''' into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''browser.urlbar.trimURLs'''. double-click it and change its value to '''false''' in order to display the full url with the http://-prefix in the address bar...

Thank you, "the-edmeister" -- You render a great service, one that lifts my spirits.
Your answer also taught me to be a little more persistent, as I had started looking at Preferences, and just didn't notice the icons (including Applications) at the top of that window that would have led me to my answer.

• When I type my IP address into the search bar, it cannot locate the website but it can with a regular website. How can I see my IP address's website?

I need to find my WEP key to connect to the internet on one of my ds games. It says to type in your IP address and it will take you to the site in which it will show you all the information. But when I type it in , nothing comes uo and they can't locate the page. Help please!

You need to first have whatever you are using connected to your internet router. Then you type in the local, Private, IP address of the router. Which in most cases is 192.168.1.1, Not the routers WAN/Internet port IP address.
From there you need the login username and password for the router. Depending on what make router you have and if you ever changed it the username usually is either Admin or it is blank and the password is whatever you changed it to or the Default used by all router from that manufacturer.
Also WEP is a very insecure WiFi encryption protocol. Can be hacked very easily. I suggest you change to WPA2.

• The windows of the Windows bar are already a form of tabs, so I don't need them in Firefox. How can I disable them completely from Firefox 23?

RE: TABS ARE WINDOWS!
The Windows bar already functions as a tab bar. Those tabs are called "windows." So, I find Firefox tab windows superfluous. How can I disable them completely from Firefox 23? I don't need what is essentially TWO windows bars covering up the entire width of my widescreen monitor's image! I already have a Windows bar at the bottom of my screen and, if I really wanted to, I could change ITS position to the top of the screen, so that it would LOOK like the Firefox tab windows bar. Firefox TABS are, essentially, a superfluous SECOND WINDOWS BAR.
Here are my reasons for why I'd rather use Mozilla's Firefox, than Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Google's Chrome. I love and admire Firefox for Mozilla's intent on good security, for Firefox's Personas add-on, and for Firefox's free use of the Ad-Block add-on which, as you know, has the distinct virtue of reducing screen clutter--the last of which is my motive for wanting to get rid of the SUPERFLUOUS Firefox tabs "windows" bar. I am dreadfully sick of companies forcing miscellaneous bars (mostly representing marketing campaigns trying to sell me something) into my browser (and down my throat) every time I download something. (In case you haven't guessed, I am deliberately referring to your Firefox tabs bar as a "Firefox tabs 'windows' bar," because TABS are WINDOWS!)

Let me clarify even more. The Firefox add-on you mention does not remove "tabs" windows. It only HIDES the "tabs" bar when there is only one "tab" in that window. It DOES NOT end "tabs." It does not turn "tabs" off.
I know this, because, even with the add-on you recommend, the "tabs" bar often re-appears when I open a link, which--for some unknown reason--Firefox defaults to opening in a second "tab" within the same window, rather than putting it in a new Windows bar window. This, of course, disregards what I want to happen.
I want to use my Windows bar to control my windows. I do not want my Firefox browser controlling my windows--which it calls "tabs." Can you tell me how to shut off "tabs?"

Every time Firefox opened

The AVG addon seems to have caused the problem for me. I had it disabled and everything worked. Then I updated to AVG 2011 and the problem occurred. It seems to have reenabled itself after the update.
Just disabling it solved the problem.

When Safari is active, in the menu bar at the top of the screen, there's a menu labeled View. From that menu, select Show Toolbar. It's right at the top.

• Safari keeps crashing when i try to type in web addresses

safari keeps crashing when i try to type in web addresses. how do i fix this

Back up all data. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Reset Safari...
Check these boxes:
Clear history
Remove all website data
Uncheck all other boxes. Press return. Test.
If Safari crashes immediately on launch and you can't do as above, hold down the shift key and launch it by clicking its icon in the Dock, then try. Failing that, ask for guidance.

• Can I stop the automatic underline when I type an email address in Pages?

Can I remove the automatic underline when I type an email address? I know I can manually remove it, but am wondering if I can just stop it from happening?
Thank

I think you are probably referring to the email address being automatically converted to an active hyperlink. You can remove this by opening the Inspector, clicking the hyperlink icon (second from the right) and, in the Hyperlink tab, after selecting (highlighting) the address, uncheck the box next to
"Enable as a hyperlink." Or, to disable all hyperlinks, click the box at the bottom of that Inspector window next to "Make all hyperlinks inactive."
To avoid this in all documents, open Pages Preferences and, in the Auto-Correction Preferences, uncheck "Automatically detect email and web addresses."

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app. I am certain other applications also need this information. Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information. Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

• Hi I am typing a web address into the navagation bar and nothing is happening any suggestions

I can click on a bookmark and I can navigate to a website, however when I type in an address nothing happens. This just started. Please help!

Hi cowtan,
Sorry you are having problems with the awesome bar.
I imagine the new behaviour may be reversed by changing some pref but I have not looked that up.
Regardless of the new behaviour you seem to have some fault as my awesomebar still gives bookmarked items.
As a troubleshooting step try adding an asterisk in the awesomebar (as first character or anywhere) that should then filter the results in the dropdown list to bookmarked only items, does that work ?
* see [[Search your bookmarks, history and tabs with the Awesome Bar#w_changing-results-on-the-fly]]_changing-results-on-the-fly
You possibly have some extension interfering with the awesome bar, try Firefox in safe mode (but do NOT* at this stage try the Reset Firefox option)
<nowiki>*</nowiki>'''edit''' - personal opinion, if a user; such as you; is knowledgeable enough to use ''about.config'' the easy solution of ''FirefoxReset ''is probably not the best route, as it can have unwanted side effects that are avoidable.
* [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
Do your bookmarked items appear in safe mode ?
Try a new Profile.
The best method for troubleshooting this will be to set up a new Firefox profile, you can then: experiment, troubleshoot, alter settings or extensions installed in that profile without changing and potentially damaging your current profile.
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Creating_a_new_profile
I suggest to prevent unexpected problems you
* use a sensible name such as test 2012 for the profile name
* ensure an empty folder is used & do not then rename or delete the new profile (instead add or delete shortcuts to it)
* also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_multiple_profiles_-_Firefox

• Typing web address into browser not working

I type into browser box the web address I want to go to and then press enter. Firefox browser does not go to the web address, it does not respond. I type www.wsj.com and then press "enter" on keyboard or cursor link on the arrow and Firefox browser does not go to that web address. It remains motionless. I have to type the web address into a search engine box in order to get to the web address I want to go to.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
• I use to drag and drop an web address into a link toolbar, can't seem to figure out how to do this...?

I just upgraded to Windows 7 and with it I got the latest Firefox. There is nothing like learning 2 things at one time. On my old XP and 3.? all I have to do was drag and drop a web address into a link toolbar. Saving all my frequent visited or just sights I want quick access to, to a toolbar quick button. I have been playing with this for days and decided to try this Forum. I did find the Bookmark toolbar, but cant seem to figure out what is if for or if you can drop into it. When I right click it and Customize, it shows me add on buttons, but nothing to do with web addresses or alike...
Bottom line; I want to be able to drag and drop a web address into a toolbar for recall latter and be able to edit the address with a right click at a latter date in necessary...
Thanks, Mike

You can drag and drop the favicon also known as the [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Site+Identity+Button site identity button], at the left hand edge of the location bar onto a toolbar to bookmark the site.
