If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.
    Ciao.

When instant streaming Netflix on my Macbook Pro, the sound is very very low even when sound controls are set at highest level.  I do not have this problem when listening to TV or watching movies streamed from DishNetwork.  I contacted Netflix and they had me install a newer version of their software Silverlight... this did nothing to resolve the issue.  They were not familiar with the issue.

Well if your on 10.6.2, you need to software update to 10.6.8
Perhaps you need to adjust the Silverlight (Microsoft DRM video plug-in) sound level itself too
Run a check here to see if your current on your Silverlight (works for all browsers)
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
Use another browser like Firefox and see if it continues.
Try another video file. They all have their own sound levels too.

So it is cutting off the end at 59 minutes?  How large is the file that is being exported?  You may be running up against a file size limitation.

when i use windows 7 with macbook pro ,the fan work hardly, how do i fix it?

    Use InputRemapper
This is one or only utility I know, there are I am sure one or two others.
And the weakest link in running Windows on Mac: lack of thermal/SMC fan control to manage air flow and heat!

No I didn't do anything like that, but...
    I've found a pattern/cause!
It's every time I open the app store. Why on earth would that be?

  • When I play Minecraft on my Macbook Pro the whole computer freezes

After a bit of Minecraft on my Macbook Pro (the amount of time before the freeze is always different.  I can go hours without it freezing up but sometimes it freezes after ten minutes), the screen will get distorted and my computer becomes completely unresponsive.  The only thing I can o is force it to shut off and turn it back on.
This happened before, and then my hard drive was found to be bad, so I got a new one... now it is happening again, and I would love it if I didn't have to replace the hard drive again...
One of my Engineering friends thinks it might be my graphics card or the computer itself, another said he'd never, ever seen something like the problem I am having.  I'd like to know if there's something I can do to fix this problem.
My computer has a 2.8GHz Intel i7 duo-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB graphics card, if that is of any use to anyone who can help me.
On a side, slightly less annoying note, when I plug in my headphones, the volume stays constant no matter how many times I adjust the volume using the buttons on the keyboard or the icon on the top of the screen.  I have to go into the system preferences to change the volume.  Sometimes, when I unplug the headphones, the problem persists with the computer speakers.  Any ideas why this is happening or what I can do to fix it?

No one has any helpful tips?

  • MacBook Pro mid 2010 goes to sleep right after booting

Hello and thank you in advance to anyone that can help me. I have  a MacBook Pro mid 2010 and I recently spill tea on the computer. I took everything and dried out everything hoping and praying that it will start again. I put everything back together and it started but right after starting (like 15 seconds after)  the monitor goes to sleep right away. But here is the weird thing; I have Windows 8 installed on bootcamp, so if I start on bootcamp, it starts with no problem. I am actually writing this from my macbook but on bootcamp. Any ideas why it goes to sleep on Mac but in Windows seems to be working just fine?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • I've connected my macbook pro (os 10.6.8) to an external display, but it will not go into clam shell mode!  When I close the lid the laptop goes to sleep, and I am unable to wake it using the external keyboard or mouse.

A rundown of what I've tried:
Adjusting energy settings to try to prevent sleep
Pluging the USB keyboard and wacom tablet directly into the laptop (as opposed to a usb hub)
My laptop's power cable is connected
My display (a Vizio TV) is recognized in the System Preferences panel
I'd been using this TV for about a year with my older Macbook Pro (OS 10.5.8), though using a different wireless keyboard and mouse
***Update:  The issue seems to lie with the keyboard and wacom tablet.  I am trying to use a wireless Case Logic keyboard (with dongal) and wired wacom tablet to wake the Macbook Pro in clamshell mode.  To experiment, I tried using my Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse set (also dongal) that I had been using before and it wakes the computer without any problems!  However, I really need to be able to use my wacom tablet.  If I switch to the tablet after waking the computer using the Logitech keyboard & mouse it works, but once the computer sleeps it won't work anymore.  I could keep switching back and forth I suppose, but it's sort of a pain.  There has to be an easier way!  Any ideas why the wired wacom tablet is unable to wake the computer in clamshell mode?
    Thanks!

So your keyboard or mouse won't wake the Mac when you close the lid correct? Try resetting the SMC and pram
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My Office for Mac 2008 disk has a scratch in the paper on the top.  When I load it in my MacBook Pro the drive makes a low pitched beep?  Can I repair the surface ( the bottom is fine and it is not cracked).  Are there any other options.

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro which has been working fine.  Had to reformat HD and reload software.  Am using Mountain Lion which MS said supports Office Mac 2008.  When loading it the drive ran then began making a low frequency beep, then ejected the disk.  Upon inspection I see a scratch in the paper on the top of the disk, but there is no crack and the bottom surface is clean without scratches.
I assume this problem is from this damage.  If so what can I do to repair it so it will work in the drive.
If not what else would cause this problem.  Thanks for you help. Emom6

DVD drives read the bottom of the disk, not the top. Smooth out the paper & try again.

  • Pop & smoke coming from macbook pro. Laptop died

Anyone else experience this rather strange phenomenon?
Purely out of goodwill, I am posting for this guy who purchased from me, a macbook pro 2.53 Ghz with 4GB RAM with a fresh install of Snow Leopard on it (gave him original discs etc with it). This machine worked like a charm with ZERO hassles while it was with me. ZERO hassles and it showed not even the faintest hint of any problem for the years I owned it. I took excellent care of it and it was in pristine condition working and looking like brand new even on the date of sale. Heck it was still giving me an easy 6 hours battery life and no signs of slowing down or anything.
Anyway, when he took it from me, he texted me close to the end of the day that apparently he was using migration assistant to transfer data from his old laptop to the MBP and he was about 10 minutes into the process wherein he heard a pop and then smoke came out from the back of the MBP and the computer shut down. I am at a COMPLETE loss of words, thoughts or ideas as to what the heck he did with the computer to have resulted in this smoky outcome.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? If yes, please please respond so this kid can be helped out.
Also, for something like this, what sort of backup or coverage does Apple provide? Of course the laptop was from 2009 with no Apple Care on it. Because honestly I could've taken care of most tech issues and never expected my laptop to emit smoke and get fried like that.
Thus, I am guessing and hoping that they uncondintionally take care of this issue because this is a very rare and strange phenomenon. Also, in all its probability, it's not like the kid was running a nuclear reactor through this MBP for it to go toast like this.
Could this be a batter issue? A power supply issue or a hard disc issue?
I would appreciate if someone could let me know anything related to such a problem (or similar) if it happened to them too. Any words of advice or suggestions would be most welcome as to how best to tackle this situation. I dont' want this kid to feel cheated off his money. If he is truly telling me honestly that it happened during just a file transfer then he needs to be helped and I want to provide him whatever information I can, so he doesn't lose his money.
    Thank you for your time

    Hi Phagun,
The problem, at least as I see it is that you really don't know what caused the problem. It could have been a random failure for some unexplained reason or it could have been an accidental spill into it. You just don't know. All you have to go on is what the purchaser told you. You know that you took good care of it and had no issues with the product when you sold it.  Perhaps what you might do is gently ask the new owner to take it in and have it diagnosed and to call you and let you know what they say. It is possible that there is something simple and inexpensive to repair. At least that way you will have some factual basis from which to try and alleviate the situation.
I am certain you feel bad that this happened. Most of us would but you are not responsible for what happened to it. It is possible that it was damaged in shipment and no one noticed it. There are just too many possibilities.
There are a couple of factual itmes that were mentioned in previous posts. First of all Apple is not responsible to fix it at this point. That is a fact and there is no changing it. Warranties are limited in scope and time and the computer is well out of warranty because it is 3 years old. If you feel badly about it or feel some sort of responsbility than refund the money and take it back is all I can suggest. No manufacturer is going to cover a product that is two years out of warranty and it just isn't realistic to expect them too.
I wish I could provide you with some hope but these things happen. Nothing lasts forever and until you can be certain what happened then there is not much you can expect from Apple or folks here. We certainly can't provide you with anything more than emotional support which we are happy to do, but it won't solve the purchasers problem.
Once again, I would suggest you ask him to take it in and have it diagnosed. If he refuses that will also give you information about what may, may I say have happened.

  • When i shut my display, my MacBook Pro will not go to sleep!!!!

Hi everyone, i have been having a problem recently with my MacBook Pro, and as the title suggests i am having a problem with putting my computer to sleep. For some reason when i shut the display to put the computer to sleep, the computer never actually goes to sleep. The light on the open button turns on but it doesn't turn to the normal gradual pulse. The screen actually turns off but the hard drive never stops running. Many times i don't realize this has happened until hours later when i actually come back to my computer and it is just in that same state. When i come back to the computer it is also very hot. When i try and open the display to get back on my computer, however, nothing happens at all. its almost like it just freezes while trying to sleep. The only thing i can do at this point to get it out of this state is to hold the the power button in and restart the computer. I should note that this problem occurs probably every 1:15 times i put my computer to sleep. Any help concerning this problem would be most appreciated. Thanks again!!!

My MBP does this on occasion as well.
It also used to make a terrible processor noise, but I just got the logic board replaced through apple care. So far it has not had the sleep problems since i got it back, but it has only been a week, so who knows.
also make sure you have updated the firmware, if you have one of the early models it may be outdated (like mine).
I never did figure out a permanent solution, but it seems like it happened a lot less after the firmware update.
Good luck, I'll let you know if mine is in the clear with the new logic board
