Greenz has a good point. It seems Apple does not, nor has ever had a decent solution for users that have ever had a hardcopy CD they didn't get from iTunes. It always keeps just what was purchased from Apple and tries it's best to trash everything else unless you go through a twelve step process to as one contributor posted above, "protect yourself from yourself".
Why in the world would I need to do that...they've been in the game for too long for this unacceptable nonesense time and again. I am not trying to harm myself--I would keep my music if up to me . Please help to find a real and permanent fix.
I did not steal my music like some do so I would appreciate Apple not losing it.

They should not be if everything goes properly. However, if anything does go awry, and you do not make a full backup of your iPhone before upgrading, then yes, you would loose everything in your camera roll.
Always, always make backups before changing anything - a backup is your only insurance if anything, by chance, does go wrong.
And to truly safeguard your photo's, you should be transfering them to your computer regularly anyway.

Any photos in your camera roll, not previously imported to your computer, you will lose. You should be regularly importing these photos, as the iPhone's camera roll is not designed as a storage device.
Had you been regularly syncing/backing up, you wouldn't lose anything. Now you know, don't backup your data, and you will eventually lose it all, guaranteed.

All my Songs get deleted!

Every Once in a while my ipod deletes all my music and i have to reupdate them usually its not a problem but this time when it happened i lost it all from my library too. I get my music form Limewire and delete it after it is on my ipod i'm sick of redownloading music is there a way to get this problem fixed or why this is happening

I just reformatted my hard drive, deleting my iTunes songs folder in my Documents and Settings folder. However, I still do have all of my songs on my iPod. If I plug it into my computer to charge/update, will all the songs get deleted from it? i.e. Whenever you update and the song isn't in iTunes, it gets deleted from the iPod. I'm just wondering if this will apply to this situation. Thanks.

Usually when you connect it, iTUnes give this long message that basicly says "This ipod is linked to a different library do you want to delete whats on it" and you just hit NO.
But if you want to be on the safe side, hold the shift and ctrl keys down, WHILE HOLDING THEM connect the ipod and wait for itunes to open and list the ipod before you let go of the keys.
After either one you do (Be it the shift key was or the connect and get message) you goto edit>preferences>ipod and set it to "Manual update"
Once on "Manual Update", you can use third party programs to copy all the songs back to the PC if you need to.
Since you are starting with a blank iTunes library I take for granted, Id suggest podutil (Link Below). Once you have podutil, close iTUnes and open podutil with the ipod connected.
In Podutil hit "Copy To" to set it to the location you want it to copy the songs on your PC. Then hit "Copy Settings" and check both "Add tracks to iTUnes" and "Rebuild Playlists". then start the copy.
Its trailware so after every 50 songs it copys, you get a pop up, just hit "OK" for it to continue

I would understand it if you checked email on your Mac, and then those messages were not available on your iOS devices if you had the advanced account setting "remove copy from server after retrieving message:" set to immediately.
I looked through my iPhone settings and don't even see an option to tell my phone to pull the only copy of a message and delete it from the server.
Possibly there is another setting in Lion (I am running Snow Leopard still) that tells your Mac to only synchronize mail to your iOs devices and is not pulling mail directly from iCloud.
You could try disabling your current iCloud email account in Mac Mail, and adding a new one and just telling Mail it is a standard IMAP account (imap.mail.me.com incoming and smtp.mail.me.com outgoing).
I did that for Leopard to get my email even to work after MobileMe is cancelled and it seems to work fine with my iPhone.
If that doesn't work, you can delete that new email account and re-enable the temporarily disabled iCloud email account from above.

Lion dropped application support for PowerPC. An OS may drop or change what to use to open a file, not the file.
Of course CCC is what many have used for 10 yrs now and it is or will be $20 like SuperDuper - commercial.
Always use something like those in addition to or instead of TimeMachine.

If you UPGRADE, you keep it all. If you clean install, by ay of Disk Utility on Leopard's install screen, you will lose iLife. Simply reinstall iLife and you are ok (if you own the iLife DVD) or if you want to use your recovery DVD, simply INSTALL BUNDLED SOFTWARE and you'll be fine.

If all goes as it is supposed to, no. Your data should all stay exactly where it is. However, there's always a possibility that something could go wrong.
When you upgrade, you need to do the following:
1) Check all your software for compatibility with the new system.
2) Repair the hard drive with Disk Utility.
3) Make a full backup of your whole system using Time Machine.
4) Ideally, make a second full backup of your whole system using something else, like Carbon Copy Cloner. (I consider two backups to be the minimum.)
5) Wait until you have time to deal with any possible problems that crop up.
6) Install the upgrade.

Are you saying that you had all your music safely stored in itunes and now it's all gone? You might try getting back the itunes folder that contains all your music (you haven't told us what kind of computer you're using) from a computer backup, say from a day ago. If using a mac, look in Time Machine, in the music folder for your account.

You can back up before you update.
You can always re-download apps from the purchased option in the app store.

Hey everyone! i have a external hardrive i keep my itunes library of songs on and it wont sync with my ipod touch inless i copy and paste it into my ipod device when thats conected. i dont want all the songs on there only checked ones. help plz!!

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.

Hold the home and power button down until your phone restarts. If that doesn't work, backup and restore using iTunes.
