When i upgrade to leopard will it keep ilife

when i upgrade to leopard will i have to reinstall ilife or will it go straight from tiger to leopard?

If you UPGRADE, you keep it all. If you clean install, by ay of Disk Utility on Leopard's install screen, you will lose iLife. Simply reinstall iLife and you are ok (if you own the iLife DVD) or if you want to use your recovery DVD, simply INSTALL BUNDLED SOFTWARE and you'll be fine.
It works - I did it today....for ALL my Mac's.

  • What happens to iweb-built site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and subsequently upgrade to 10.6.8 or even 10.7? Will fonts stay the same? Will layout change? Or anything else change? Thanks

What happens to iweb-build site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3) and subsequently update that to 10.6.8 or even to 10.7? Evidently iweb has been discontinued. I have version 3.0.3 of iweb now but understand that there's been an update for OS 10.6 so same question goes for this update.
Will fonts change? Will layout change? Will widgets still work? Links? Will Google Analytics PlugIn still work?
(Since MobileMe is disappearing, I now save iweb site to local folder on my computer, then upload it to GoDaddy using Cyberduck. I run Google Analytics plug in on folder before its uploaded.)
My computer, MacBook Pro came with iweb, which has been updated to 3.0.3. Since iweb is discontinued, will upgrade of operating system just ignore iweb so that iweb will run the same as before? Or will it wipe it out? Or change how it currently works (questions above).
    Thanks

As you now know iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store.  To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.

    Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an  Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

When I upgrade to IOS5 will all my songs get deleted?

Greenz has a good point.  It seems Apple does not, nor has ever had a decent solution for users that have ever had a hardcopy CD they didn't get from iTunes.  It always keeps just what was purchased from Apple and tries it's best to trash everything else unless you go through a twelve step process to as one contributor posted above, "protect yourself from yourself".
Why in the world would I need to do that...they've been in the game for too long for this unacceptable nonesense time and again.  I am not trying to harm myself--I would keep my music if up to me .  Please help to find a real and permanent fix.
I did not steal my music like some do so I would appreciate Apple not losing it.

  • If I upgrade to Leopard, will it resolve the problems with my iMac?

I have one of the first intel-based iMacs that came out. I bought it in January of 2006. Is it having problems because there may be bugs in it?...since it is one of the first intel-based iMacs. Some problems that I have are: Safari freezes like crazy, iTunes freezes occasionally, Mail will sometimes shut down for no reason, iPhoto freezes, and sometimes the overall performance of the computer is slower than what it should be. I have plenty of hard drive space available, so I don't think that's the issue.
If I upgrade to Leopard will this resolve these problems? Or will it just slow my computer down even more? If that won't solve the problem, what else can I do to speed my computer up, and stop things from freezing?

Upgrading to Leopard in itself will not fix your system problems. However the act of doing a clean or Archive install of the system whether it be 10.4 or 10.5 could very well resolve your issues. So it's not necessarily the fact that you are upgrading rather doing a clean install. My recommendation would be to try and figure out your issues first then decide whether you want to upgrade or not.
How fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? Have you installed all of Apple's software updates? A good starting point is to open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the hard drive on the left(the Mac OS X Volume) and click Repair Disk Permissions then Verify Disk. Repairing the Permissions is something that should be done often as regular maintenance and Verifying the Disk checks the volume directory for errors. If it finds any problems you will need to boot up the the install disk and run Disk Utility from there in order to Repair it. Afterwards Go to the Apple Menu/System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that the Mac OS X volume is selected as the startup system.

  • If I upgrade to Lion will I keep my current bootcamp with XP installed?

If I upgrade to Lion will I keep my current bootcamp with XP installed working?

OS X Lion: "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk (volume name)" appears during installation
Normally, and if you didn't change the number or resize the partitions, should be fine.
I don't think anyone can guarantee anything, which is why backups are essential.
You can even install Lion to an external drive as well.
For Mac, you can clone your system and have a bootable backup; use TimeMachine.
For Windows, there are various tools to backup data or partitions.

  • When i upgrade to Lion will my office 2008 work?

I want to upgrade my Mac to Lion and Apple support is telling me that my MS Office 2008 may not work and/or I need a patch from Microsoft.  I then talk to Microsoft and they say there is not an issue with MS Office 2008 when upgrading to Lion.  Who do I believe?  Will all my data files and entourage data remain intact when I upgrade to Lion?

Office maintains a central datafile in your /Home/Documents/ folder. Each new version of Office simply imports that file. So all your Office data such as mail should remain intact after you upgrade. Here's how to make a bootable backup:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.

    Hi Brad,
there were some problems with Parallels and Leopard when Leopard came out last year.
But if you have updated Parallels to the latest version (5584) you shouldn't encounter any problems.
But with any major upgrade of OSX, it is advisable to make a backup of your current OSX Tiger to an externl harddisk, for example, by using something like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
At least, that's what I would do / have done.

  • Upgrading to Leopard will turn your firewall off!

    FYI:
I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. All of my prior settings were respected, except for the Firewall. I had it on previously, then, after upgrade, it was off.
The Firewall settings have been moved from the Sharing to the Security Preferences pane (which makes sense).

I found an interesting article from the BBC regarding this issue:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7071017.stm
    Wednesday, 31 October 2007
    "Leopard upgrade hits Mac firewall
Upgrading to Leopard can mean your firewall is turned off
Upgrading to the latest version of Apple's operating system, might make a Mac less secure, say experts.
A test of Leopard revealed that installing it led to the firewall on a Mac being turned off and its default setting changed to leave it disabled.
Heise Security, who conducted the tests, said the failings meant users could not "rely" on the firewall to protect them.
Apple has yet to comment about the security shortcomings in Leopard.
Leopard, the newest version of OS X, was launched on 26 October and since then Apple claims to have sold or delivered more than two million copies of the software.
But a test of Leopard by Heise Security security expert Jurgen Schmidt found that the firewall in the updated software was set to off and allowed any and every incoming net connection.
Mr Schmidt also found that installing the software as an upgrade to a machine on which the firewall was turned on would lead to this protective software being turned off when that computer was re-started.
He also found that even when the firewall was re-activated it did not let users know about all the potentially vulnerable processes running on that machine.
Commenting for Heise Mike Barwise, editor of the site, said: "This as a serious problem: It provides a false sense of security, which is more dangerous than a lack of actual security that you know about."
Apple has yet to respond to a BBC request for comment on the Heise findings.
Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, said: "Year after year, Macs continue to have these potential security problems. "

  • If I upgrade to Leopard will that solve my app problems?

Most of my apps won't open. I tried creating new preferences, safe start and a host of other things, thanks to Dale's suggestions. Even though I've changed everything (my dock is now the default) Microsoft Office, Quark, Quicken, etc., won't start. The only thing that's working is Adobe CS3. Reloading all my apps is difficult to impossible.
I didn't want to upgrade to Leopard because I've heard so many bad things but do I have a choice? (I have a free copy from Apple.)
    Any suggestions?

  • What problems will I encounter when I upgrade to leopard?

    Hi,
I'm going to purchase a Leopard upgrade for my MacBook Pro, but i've read alot of problems that users are encountering on this forum (Saying that, I've been on the MacBook Pro forum and there's alot of posts concerning issues/problems with this Laptop, but I have not ever had any).
So is there any initial problems that I WILL encounter when upgrading my MacBook Pro 1GB 2.16GHz Intel Duo Core from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1?
    Regards,

I'm still awaiting delivery of OSX Leopard, but I think what I might do once it arrives is to just upgrade with no backup of my current 10.4.11 on an external Hard Drive. What could possibly go wrong? nothing really has with any apple product i've bought so far.
That's just plain foolish. Never ever upgrade without a backup. We get "this operating system ate my hard drive posts" here all the time. Why? Not because the operating system is flawed, but because people don't take proper precautions. No operating system can handle:
    1. Corrupt system data files.
    2. Third party drivers and firmware that aren't updated.
    3. Lack of disc space.
    4. Directory damage.
    5. RAM that hasn't been completely tested.
With every update, a different angle on the problems above appears to happen, because each update accesses data files slightly differently, whether to match newer specs for information, or to better manage memory for other types of applications which need better memory management. Unfortunately unless you are using a vanilla system, which most people aren't, your chances of success diminish with each new addon you put in. See my upgrade FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
And NEVER EVER upgrade without at least two backups.

  • Upgrading to Leopard - Will I have to Reconfigure Clients?

I have 30 computers connecting to Open Directory on my 10.4.11 Xserve (Named FS-01).
I'm going to completely erase that Xserve and freshly install 10.5.3 Leopard Server onto it. The plan is to give this "new" Leopard server the same name (FS-01), and the same IP address.
We'll be manually duplicating the Leopard server with the same groups, users, managed prefs, etc. We just won't be doing an in-place upgrade (long story, but suffice to say our Tiger server installation has been problematic enough that I'd rather just do a full wipe of it instead of trying any upgrade routes).
After the Leopard server is up and running, will I need to take any action on my clients (mostly Tiger and some Leopard machines)? I'm thinking No, because the clients are still connecting to an OD master with the same IP address as they were before I upgraded.
    Can anyone give me verification?

I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner, or I may have been able to provide some advice on ways to bind your clients without having to pay a visit to each one. I'm guessing that you probably rebound all your clients by now, but just in case…
There is a way to bind Macs to an OD server using just the command line, but it would require at least ssh access to each Mac, or better yet, ARD configured on each client with you having access to each via Remote Desktop. If the latter, just use the Send Unix command function.
Assuming either of these in place, issuing the following command will bind a target system to the OD master or a replica-
    dsconfigldap -u diradmin -p 'diradmin_password' -s -f -a FQDN -c computer-name -n "server_name"
Everything in +*bold italics*+ are things you need to provide. Most should be self explanatory. You give the directory admin name or a similarly privileged directory account that can bind machines, and the required password for that user, the FQDN of your server, a unique computer name record that shows up on the server when the client is bound and the server name, which is more cosmetic than anything, so it shows up with the name of your server in Directory Utility or Directory Access, depending on the client OS.
Optionally, you can create a search path for authentication and add your OD into it using these commands:
    dscl -q localhost -create /Search SearchPolicy dsAttrTypeStandard:CSPSearchPath
dscl -q localhost -merge /Search CSPSearchPath /LDAPv3/ FQDN
note, remove the space after the slash following LDAPv3.
Finally, restart Directory Services on the client to make sure your changes take effect:
    killall DirectoryService
I've used this many times successfully binding 10.4.x clients to a 10.4.11 OD server. I've not tried it with Leopard Server, but I'm pretty sure these commands will work the same. If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me.
There are some variations to this you can use, but I'll leave that up to you to explore by looking at the dsconfigldap man pages.
Hope that helps you, or someone else who may be in the same scenario.
