When I use my iPhone as a hotspot I cannot access the iTunes store

I use my iPhone as a hotspot to access the Internet from my Mac and PC: works fine until I try to access the iTunes store: get a message about not being able to set up a secure iTunes connection....  What's going on here? Safari works just fine, and so does email. iTunes using some sort of obscure protocol?
Using an iPhone 4S, MacBook Pro, all on most recent versions op OS's and iTunes. Anyone?
