Is there a way to fix this?
Do you have an example that someone could look at? I wouldn't be surprised if most PDFs you found were gibberish. PDF is a print format and is really only designed to be printed out and read by a human. Constructing a PDF with real Hebrew Unicode would be a rare find. Here is one example I found by passing the Hebrew word for "Hebrew" in Hebrew in Google. This is a valid PDF. I have no idea what it says.

I try to save files as a PDF on external hard drives. When I select SAVE AS PDF I get spinning colorwheel and the program I am using locks (Quicken, Quickbooks, Gmail etc.)There were several /Library/preferences. The only one that had the file was the one under my user name. I deleted it. I was using Quickbooks when the problem started. It is locked. I have to reboot the computer to use it again. I tried SAFARI using the PRINT button then SAVE AS PDF. It didn't work. It locks Safari up. I will reboot and hopefully continue.
P.S. I've done this procedure before and I was able to Save, but then the problem came back. -
I have manipulated a photo using layers etc and then flattened it and saved it under a new name. When I use 'Preview' (mac) to view the finished photo it doesn't look right. It's as the layers have not flattened correctly. When viewed in Elements 12 it looks OK. The photo looks incorrect in other software such as photo books.
Looking at the same photo before flattening, what is being shown is only the top layer.

The top layer is indeed the one that is visible, unless there is/are area(s) of translucency on that layer, so that you can visualize a portion of the subjacent layer.

In other words, just becasue I am using PDF/A, can I still select the page i need in a long document and see it before the entire file has loaded?macjack has a very valid point, so you might want to consider a second drive for files.
To partition, you need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on restart. Select Disk Utility.
Step 1 - select the hard drive.
Step 2 - select the Partition tab.
Step 3 - select the current partition and then use the lower right corner to push up and resize the partition.
Step 4 - click the plus sign to add a partition. Then select the new partition.
Step 5 - Name the new partition and select the format. The one shown in the screen shot is generally recomended.
Step 6 - Hit apply.
This procedure can be reversed at a later date if you find your Time Machine backup needs more space. -
When I use Preview,Photo Mechanic and Pages, all JPEG or RAW images appear corrupted.
I thought my hard drive was failing and replaced it and migrated everything over but the problem still exists.
It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.
Any idea what is going on?First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

Occasionally, some of the image borders turn dark grey (medium grey is the default) and then random other images cannot be opened with a double click. They only open when selected using the arrows on the keyboard. They also cannot be moved to collections. Anyone have a solution for this?
When you say "could not be opened"- what are you referring to? A double click of the mouse should view the clicked image in Loupe view- the same as pressing [E] on the keyboard for an enlarged view. (And a second double-click will take you back to library grid view.)
To "open" an image in the Development module requires you to select the image then press [D] or click on the [Develop] button.
When you say "could not be ...moved" -what are you referring to? Are you trying to move an image file from its place in a folder to another folder? Are you just wanting it in a collection? When you drag an image to a collection you are only placing a link to the image in the collection- not actually moving any file. The image will stay exactly where it is in its original folder and will remain as a thumbnail preview in the Library Grid view.
Are you having any "mouse" problems that may be changing its actions in LR ?
Do you see an exclamation mark on any image borders ?
Let's keep working on this. I am curious to see you find an answer.

I used to be able to copy and paste images from the internet into keynote slides and pages. Now when I copy and paste all I get is an empty box. My iskysoft iTube studio has also stopped downloading videos. Is there an extension I need to enable? Any ideas
Try dragging the image to the desktop, then drag the image to the slide you want it on

I am configured to open pdf's in Acrobat instead of Firefox. This works great on the web. I have a local mirror of a website on my local disk as well as a network disk. When I use my html file to attempt to open the pdf on the local disk (file:///C:/T10/drafts/adc3/adc3r04.pdf) it opens as text in Firefox - appears to be ASCII view of the binary contents of the pdf. When I use my html file on my network disk (http://tucgsa.ibm.com/~kdbutt/T10/drafts/adc3/adc3r04.pdf) everything works as it should.
You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer and use the Adobe Reader instead.

Making preview default viewer for pdf files

On my macbook I have the preinstalled 'preview' software and I've recently installed Adobe reader. I much prefer using preview for some functions, but since I installed Adobe reader all pdf files automatically open in that program. I've noticed that when I choose the software to open file with Adobe is now listed as 'default'. Does anyone know how to make preview default rather than Adobe reader?Hi James,
Chose any PDF file you got already and select it ones ... now get info and a NEW window will open.
Now, somewhere ad the end of this NEW window you will see *Open with* select Preview and select ALL.
Close the window ...
Now the next time you open a PDF it will be opening with Preview.

White screen flash when I use Preview to look at pics!

About a week ago my G5 Duel started flashing a white screen (like a camera flash) when I load any jpg tiff or pdf using Preview. I minimise the photo file, then load it back to full size and I get a white flash.
Its like someone is taking a screen dump of my screen every time I use the preview program... If I was on a PC I would think I was being hacked...
Any ideas?

AustraliaCreate a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

Use Preview to secure a PDF (read only)
Hello people,
I'm looking for a way to secure PDFs with Preview, to allow read only. Normally if one tries to encrypt the PDF from the drop down save as dialog box, Preview secures the whole PDF.
Similarly Pages can export to PDF but with all necessary options (open document, print, and copy) and that's all that i need. But what if a colleague comes with an already created PDF!?
Unless i buy Adobe Acrobat Pro for this (which is not going to happen) i'm out of luck.
Any ideas?

The Security Settings mentioned by Lardlad allow you to set passwords to open the document, to copy parts of it or print all of it, but I can't see any option to prevent it being modified (read only). -
Have a MacBook Pro. Been using hot mail/Safari. Suddenly can't copy and paste an e mail. Can't make an att> without getting an error message.."0 bytes empty" Got ahold of hot mail was told yes there is a problem between Mac and hot mail Safari and for $59.00 they can fix it. Forgot to ask if the same would apply if I were a pc user. Anbody shed some light on this? Anyone recomend a better em ail service other than g mail?

I want to use preview to view pdf files without trashing the adobe plug-ins?
Some of the government web sites that I need to visit regularly require me to use firefox and adobe for opening and viewing files. I would like to still be able to use Safari and Preview for opening, viewing and printing files from other web sites. Before the latest adobe update this was no problem, but now Adobe seems to have taken control over the viewing and printing settings so that even though I try printing from a Safari viewer window I get an Adobe message that this is not supported. I tried to search for an answer as I suppose I am not the only one having this problem after the most recent Adobe update. Thanks for your great help everyone. /Christian
