When I went to charge my ipod, iTunes cleared all data, help?

I put my ipod onto the usb cord to charge on the computer like always. Then iTunes opened and all my data stored in it was cleared out. It opened as if I just downloaded iTunes. This is the first time it has happened. Please help me determine what triggered this to happen and how to fix it.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes forums.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • When I try to sync my iPod shuffle 2gb all of my music can't be located.

When I try to sync my iPod shuffle 2gb all of my music can't be located. After I disconnect and reboot itunes it is all there. I have tried 2 shuffles. Both make my entire liberary dissapear once I click sync.

I'm not sure if the original poster ever got this issue resolved or not, but I'm having the exact same problem.  My iPod shuffle is a 1Gig 2nd Generation, and I have all of my music library on an external hard drive.  Before connecting my shuffle, I can play all the songs through iTunes perfectly fine, as well as sync them all to my 160GB iPod classic.  As soon as I connect my shuffle, iTunes can no longer find or play any of my music, or sync any of it to the shuffle.  In fact, it seems to make the external drive disappear from the computer entirely.  When I right click My Computer->Explore, the external drive is still there, but no files are shown on it.  After disconnecting the shuffle and rebooting the computer, the external drive is back to normal, until the shuffle is connected again.
For what its worth, this is a new problem, only started happening in the last couple months.  I've had the shuffle for 2+ years now, and I have been syncing music to it from the external USB hard drive for just as long with no issues.  Occasionally, I can sync 1-10 songs to it at a time before the external drive and all the music disappears, but for the last couple of days, the external drive seems to disappear as soon as the shuffle is connected.
Thanks for any help, I only use the shuffle for the gym/bike riding/snowboarding and I know they're fairly cheap to replace now, but I don't want to pay for a newer generation if I'll still have the same issue.

  • 120 Gig IPOD Itunes erased all music on ipod multiple times.

I have had a 120 GIG Ipod for several years now with no problems whatsoever. Filled up about 80 gigs of music. Recently when putting more music on my Ipod, iTunes started to put the songs on slowly. I'm talking it would take 10 minutes to put a single song on, when before it would only take mere seconds. Then once the sync failed, and I eject the Ipod, every single thing on it was completely erased. This has happened more than once now, even when I restored the Ipod, it continues to occur. I find this truly ridiculous. I have seen many sites where something like this has happened and there are some solutions (IE auto sync check box, etc) and I assure you I have proper settings, manually managing my music etc, and there is no way at all period, that this should be happening. I am pretty close to just wailing this thing on the ground and never buying another Apple product, so can someone please help me out before that happens. Thank you in advance.

My guess would be that there is an area of the hard drive that is failing. The delay comes when iTunes tries to read back data that has been placed there. If it can't read the data reliably then at some point it will fall over. Here's how to check things out...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

If your iPod is OK then this trick may help you get your data on to it.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music or whatever playlist holds the bulk of the content you want on your device. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out

Itunes showing all data as other and sync button greyed out.  I have downloaded and installed Itunes 11 (multiple times) and restored my phone twice already, but I am still not able to sync my Iphone 4 with Itunes.
When I select / de-select Apps on Itunes to remove from the phone the "Apply" button does appear, but after I click it nothing happens.  Then the greyed out "sync" button just appears again.
    Anyone with some advise please?

Try Restarting or Resetting your touch.
Restart: Hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears and turn off your iPod. Press the sleep/wake button and hold it until you see the Apple icon.
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The red slider will appear first, keep hold everything until you see the Apple icon. Release the buttons.
Check your iPod and see if your music and apps have reappeared. If they do after either option, then resync your iPod.
If neither works, then Restore your touch through iTunes.

  • I tried to download the latest itunes update, but received an error and now can't open itunes at all. Help?

i tried to download the latest itunes update, but received an error and now can't open itunes at all. Help?

    Hello bajura007,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing the latest iTunes update.  I recommend following the steps below:
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
When you get to the step to uninstall iTunes, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.

  • HT4061 my iphone 4 battery went dead then when i went to charge it the plug into itunes came up as its gone into recovery for some reason, itunes is only giving me the option to restore which i dont want to do as i have photos of my babys !! help me !!

please help!! my iphone 4 battery died then when i tried to charge it the plug into itunes came up as my phone has gone into recovery mode for some stupid reason! i have tried tinyumbrella as itunes is giving me no other option but to restore, i dont want to restore as i have very important photos of my babies that i havnt backed up yet and CANT loose!! iv tried holding the 2 buttons intogether but that doesnt work either ! there is bound to be a way around this without loosing my photos. im tamping with apple, this shouldnt happen ! aswell as worring bout loosing all my photos and now i have no phone so am paying for a contract that doesnt even work . please please please helppppppp ! x

If your phone is in recovery mode, all the data on it, including those photos, is already lost.  Leaving important photos on a phone for any length of time, such as baby pictures, as you've found out is a terrible idea.
You've no option but to restore your phone.

  • I updated itunes to 10.4, my ipod touch was wiped clean then errored (2003) when attempting to restore, now my ipod is clear. I have tried disabling my antivirus, no luck.

I updated itunes to 10.4, my ipod touch was wiped clean then errored (2003) when attempting to restore. Now my ipod is clear, when I turn it on I get the "Connect to itunes screen", this never goes. I have tried disabling my antivirus, to allow me to restore with no luck.
When I go into itunes I get the message - itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes,
how am I supposed to do this ?
I would rather take the ipod to someone to do the restoration - I still have itunes with all of my downloads on my computer, I dont want to risk losing this as I can re-install onto my ipod when it is sorted.

Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on): If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.

Do you have access to another computer you can use to restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod?

  • When i try to restore my ipod, itunes freezes

this morning i woke up to the red X on my ipod screen which is the worst way to wake up. I ended up fixing it via the slap trick, then itunes recognized my ipod again for a little. Then, itunes said that my music was wiped and corrupted everything.
So, I had to reformat and did. Now, i've been stuck for the last 6 hours because iTunes won't give me the option to restore before my ipod forces it into "not responding" (itunes is up to date). When i unplug my ipod itunes is fine. WHen i turn my ipod on, it acts as if everything is fine, but its just an empty ipod. When i check the ipod's memory on it, it says its completely erased - 73.4 GB free, but it says i have 3 games somehow??
What can I do to get my ipod working again in itunes? Thank you.

    To be more specific:
I formatted the ipod because itunes and my computer told me that was my only option. So, I formatted it and waited until complete. After that, itunes recognized it for a moment and told me to restore. So i clicked restore and then itunes/ipod became frozen. I safely removed my ipod and then my itunes became unfrozen. My ipod was navigatable now and its memory screen showed its fully clean aside from 3 games ( 3 games?). After a minute, i plug the ipod back in and itunes freezes and wont respond, but "My Computer" recognizes always that there is an ipod plugged in.
So now I have been stuck in a loop of plug in -> freeze/not responding -> unplug -> restart computer -> plug in -> etc. for the last 6 hours. My ipod is still not restored, as far as I can see.
Also, I dont know if this is related, but i have a feeing it may, but when plugging the ipod into my computer, windows asks me if i want to check disk IPOD to fix file system errors. When it finishes it tells me it cant finish or scan because it is already in use. I have no clue how it could already be "in use".
What can be done? I feel like ive tried everything I can do and am really quite frustrated. This is the worst trouble ive ever had with an ipod.

  • When I go to charge my ipod 5g it wont charge right

I plug my ipod 5g into the computer and theres no response. So then I jiggle the cord, nothing, and by mistake I found if i pull the cord back towards me a little it starts charging, like theres a short in the wires of the charger. Then itunes will pop up and do its thing, after a few minutes though itunes will say something like it had a error reading, or conecting or something to the iphone, again, i have a ipod 5g. Do you think it could be the cord, computer, or ipod malfunction? i just got it on Christmas and it didnt start doing thing until two days ago...PLEASE HELP!!

    pp:
First thing to eliminate as the problem would be the USB cable. If you you don't have a spare, see if you have a friend with the same cable and try that.
