When in workflow to do localized sharpening and removal of blemishes?

I work with NEFs that I open into PS as 16 bit Tiffs in Prophoto RGB. My files are intended both for family photobooks and for further editing of the best  - plus these last ones will end up being resized to more than one size before their final output. I presently do not do any sharpening in Camera Raw (I use PS CS6) and remove noise after opening into PS where I convert for smart filters and use either PS's own filters or (mostly) the Neat Image plugin. I do not do any sharpening here as I have learned it would be best to wait as long as possible doing this.
I want to be able to do some localized sharpening (using the sharpen tool) and also to remove blemishes (here I often use the brush tool that also cannot be used on a smart object). Also output sharpening. I have to admit that I previously did all this (except of course the output sharpening) on the background layer (to minimize file sizes and also because I always keep untouched original files elsewhere) before further editing in PS. When I got some very noisy files from family members with less good cameras and found pixel holes and remaining noise in darker areas I even used the blur tool directly on this layer (on faces) before applying the sharpen tool where needed locally. This is perhaps vandalism from a professional standpoint but a desperate attempt to save these files if important for the family history.
Can I do the localized sharpening + other localized cleanup early on in the PS editing and only postpone the output sharpening till after rezsizings and JPEG conversion (the photobook files)?
As for the noise filters: Could I after the above convert for smart filter and here use the noise filters (without sharpening) for an editable version of these and do the rest of my PS editing?
Or do I really have to perform all this steps for each size of the file?
I am sorry if the questions are dumb or disclose a lot of misunderstandings but my learning curve seems to become steeper and steeper with age.

  • Sharpening and noise defaults in the Develop Module

    Capture Sharpness
I’m getting my head around sharpening and am of the understanding that there are three distinct phases: Capture Sharpening, Creative Sharpening and Output sharpening
With regards to Capture Sharpening I’ve noticed that when I import a CR2 file into Lightroom 3.6 there is an Adobe pre-set in the Develop Module. Is this a form of Capture Sharpening default?
    Sharpening
    Amount: 25
    Radius: 1.0
    Detail: 25
    Noise Reduction
    Luminance: 0
    Colour: 25
    Detail: 50

In Lr, "capture" sharpening is global sharpening, and "creative" sharpening is local sharpening (or sharpen masking on global basis but tailored to the image), or at least that's one way of looking at it.
in other words, if you're sharpening raw data non-destructively, such that first round of sharpening isn't being baked in, there is no need to separate capture sharpening from creative sharpening, in your mind, or in the software you use.
Put another way, the notion of capture sharpening comes from days when first round of sharpening was baked in, e.g. shooting jpegs, or in raw workflows where first pass yields a baseline tiff, and 2nd pass is artist's choice...
That said, what's needed for artistic sharpening (creative effects) can differ from what's need for baseline sharpening (initial "capture" sharpening, if you will).
Capture sharpening: just make stuff look reasonably sharp, since without it things don't.
Creative sharpening: sky's the limit... - some people consider Clarity to be a form of creative sharpening...
Note: since Lr's sharpening settings can't be varied (there is no way to apply high-radius sharpening in one region, and low-radius sharpening in another), and since its algorithm is aimed primarily at countering inherent and/or subtle/limited unsharpness, some people consider Lr's sharpening to be "capture-only". On the other hand, capture sharpening is, almost by definition, global, so since Lr supports local sharpening, and sharpen masking, those aspects can be considered "creative".
In my opinon, it's best not to get too hung up on semantics/terminology, but in a nutshell, conceptually:
    * Capture sharpening needs to be done so stuff looks reasonably sharp, and is often done across the board, not dependent on image content (this is why most people apply a default amount of sharpening in Lightroom).
    * Creative sharpening is going beyond initial/default sharpening, generally on an image-by-image basis, although not necessarily. Note: it may involve removing all global "capture" sharpening in favor of no sharpening, or local sharpening only (raw data required).
    * Output sharpening depends on resolution and medium etc, and therefore needs to be done last - tailored to output device and such..
Sorry if this post had too high of an answer to question ratio .

  • Newbie to LR3 - Local sharpen after image resize ?

Maybe someone can point me to help. I just post to web on Flickr, no printing yet.
I started photo editing with PSE5 & have moved to PSE8 since. A Mark Galer book about PSE started me on a path of .raw editing & i've been using his scheme since. I hoped i was moving to a smoother overall process with LR3, but now that i've gotten it i have a lot more doubts. I can see improves through the develop phase (sort of a curves, grad filter, noise removal, lens correction). After that, i feel only lacks (with my current low knowledge level).
The things i want included past develop are these: image resize, local sharpening (and blurring - after image resize) smooth border capability (with choice of color). One way of course is to export to PSE8. I expected more from LR3, though - rather than just 2/3 of a job for 3 * the price.

Pete Marshall pointed out one of the quickest resources for information on using Lightroom's tools, but that's not a tutorial! LR is best learned using one or more of the on-line tutorials or LR books available......and then using it! Lightroom's non-destructive workflow has been tailored to fit the specific needs of the "digital photographer" for processing Camera RAW image files. Photoshop has a vast arsenal of both destructive and non-destructive tools for general image processing, but with no specific focus on usage.
Everything you stated in your last sentence can be done very easily in LR, but using an entirely different workflow organization than Photoshop.
The things i want included past develop are these: image resize, local sharpening (and blurring - after image resize) smooth border capability (with choice of color). One way of course is to export to PSE8. I expected more from LR3, though - rather than just 2/3 of a job for 3 * the price.
    1) image resize, local sharpening (and blurring - after image resize) - This can be done using the LR Export function and adjusting 'Image Size,' and 'Output Sharpening.' NO, it is not the same methodology as Photoshop. NO, it is not as flexible. YES, it does a very nice job with the vast majority of "digital camera image files," once you get used to a different workflow.
    2) smooth border capability (with choice of color) - This can be done using LR's 'Slideshow', 'Print', and Web Modules, choosing the one most appropriate for your target usage. NO, it is not the same methodology as Photoshop, but it does a very nice job on the majority of "digital camera image files." LR also offers multi-media functions that are unavailable in PS.
In the final analysis you need to learn LR's non-destructive workflow procedures, editing tools and module functions, as a compliment to what you already know about using Photoshop. The two applications are mutually independent, but play together well when needed.

5GB is typically not enough space to download a movie.  Often, movies take from 3 - 5 GB to begin with.  The only option you have is to delete more things from your iPad.  You can remove unused Apps, pictures, music, text message (messages with pictures can take up a lot of space), email messages, books, magazines etc.

  • On Sympatico homepage, my local weather and news does not come up unless I refresh the page. But when I return to the homepage during the same session, local news/weather is gone again. Is this correctable?

When I first open the browser and it goes my homepage, Sympatico.ca, there are 2 areas of the homepage you can personalize. On the left hand side "News" Column, the bottom box "Local News" allows you to select a location (Toronto, Ontario Canada for me) to display news from that area. On the far right hand column, below the advertising bar, is "Weather" where you select your city (Brantford in my case) and it will display the 4 day forecast in C or F degrees. Once you close the homepage the settings are saved. The problem is that when I leave the homepage to any other website, if I return to the homepage the weather and local news is back to the default setting of having to select the city again. I did find if I just refreshed the page, the personalized settings appear. I have Firefox 4 and it seemed to correct the problem when I installed 4 as the same problem had been occurring with my previous version of Firefox. But now it's back to having to refresh the page to get the saved location for local weather and news. My wife uses IE8 on the same PC and has not had this problem on her Sympatico homepage.

    aha!

  • When you expand to show local and remote sites, in DW CS6 how do I get the local to be on the left?

When you expand to show local and remote sites, in the previous verions of DW, the files type (local or remote) selected when not seeing both, automatically came up on the left.  I liked local when I am editing and when I am ready to upload I expand to see both local in remote.  Before, the one you had selected, in my case local, was always displayed on the left.  Now in CS6 when I have local selected before I expand, the local is on the right and remote on the left. For me that is not correct.  I find that having local on the left works best for me like reading, left to right, I want the local on the LEFT so I can put the updated from left to the remote on the right.

No that is not work. Try to call some number and when is connect click on keyboard and you can see that sign "+" doesn't exist.
So I use local number, when I'm connect I have option to call international number but like "+3193675xxxx" how I can put?
Before on iOS 6 I do it.

  • Diff between FSS0-"bal in local curr" and OBY6- no forex dif when clear in

I want to know the difference between the setting FSS0-only balances in local currency and the OBY6 - no forex rate difference when clearing in local currency.
I tried to fined the differnce by furfing on the internet and also by F1 help from SAP.  The examples which were provided are not clear to me and any body explain with a simple example.
    I want to know
    1. difference between the two settings
2.under what circumstances these setting need to be applied, with an example

    HI Anil,
    Please refer the below points.
    1. FS00- Balance in local currency
If you set the above indicator then while posting any document with more than one currency then this particular GL account will
update only local currnecy amounts . (In document this particular Gl account is having only currency and it is local currency).
    GL 2000            1000 DEM       600 USD
    GL 1000                                   600 USD
    2.  OBY6  No forex diff when clearing.
You have one Invoice with Exchanger rate X
but clearing exchange rate is Y
    then
If above indicator is set then while clearing the Invoice (posted with two currency and exchange rate  X)
                            Payment currency            Local currency
    Cash receipt             650                             650
    Clearing of receivable        650                             650
then system will not consider exchange rates here.
other wise it will consider the exchange rate Y and it will post like below
                            Payment currency            Local currency
    Cash receipt             650                           650
    Clearing of receivable        550                           650
    Revenue from overpayment      100                           100
    Exchange rate losses       0                          100
I hope above will clear you  issue.

  • Noise, Sharpening and ACR

I have recently switched from processing my raw files from Aperture to Adobe Camera Raw 4.4.1. I shoot landscapes with the Canon 1Ds Mark III, low ISO, and wish to make very large prints (30-50"). After reading "Real World Camera Raw with CS3" it seems like the authors say that capture sharpening can be accomplished in ACR instead of what I was doing right after Aperture (with sharpening off)- that is, using Ninja Noise and then capture sharpen with Photokit Sharpener. But if I now capture sharpen in ACR I won't be able to use Ninja Noise since one should not sharpen noise. Right? So does this mean that if I capture sharpen in ACR that I should also use ACR's Noise Reduction? Or should I turn off ACR's Sharpening and Noise Reduction and do as I did before - use Ninja and PhotoKit sharpening after raw processing? (I hope this makes sense - I'm still learning the basics). Also any rough settings for what I'm doing would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

    >Not at all. There's ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that workflow. I would recommend it myself.
    >[EDIT] except I prefer Noise Ninja most of the time, and Noiseware in a few cases.
I've discussed this matter with Gordon on another thread, but a few points are worth repeating here. On page 157 of his Image Sharpening with Adobe Photoshop PSCS2, Bruce Fraser states, "Always do noise reduction before sharpening. If you sharpen, you'll almost certainly make the noise worse; the noise reduction tool will have to work harder, and will probably wipe out the sharpening you did anyway."
Most noise reduction tools do not eliminate noise but merely make it less visible. When you sharpen after noise reduction, some or much of the noise may reappear. If you do the sharpening first, this problem is eliminated, but the effect of your sharpening may also be wiped out.
Sharpening and noise reduction are basically inverse processes and work against another. Some of these problems may be eased with the use of masks. You can use a surface mask during noise reduction to help confine the NR to smooth areas where the noise is most noticeable and keep the NR away from the edges where sharpness would suffer. Similarly, you can use an edge mask during sharpening to help confine the sharpening to the edges.
That said, Noise Ninja can work reasonably well on JPEG images that have been sharpened in camera as they often are. In this case, one has to use a different noise profile for the best results.

  • Final Workflow Steps: Which is Correct and Why?

When editing RAWs, what is the most advantageous way to end your workflow in creating a TIF or Photoshop file? (and why???!!!): (what order should these steps be in?):
-converting from aRGB to sRGB (assuming of course you wanted to do that for outside lab processing)
    -resizing for proper print resolution
-converting from 16 bit to 8 bit
-final sharpening (I use Smart Sharpening and then fade in luminosity mode at 100%)
I can think of arguments for putting these final steps in various orders, but there has to be 1 definitive final order (I don't know what it its). Perhaps the answer to this would be a subjective analysis of the final prints (in large formats) with different workflow orders....or perhaps it's a mathematical answer that only someone like Thomas or John Knoll could answer. I think a lot of us do these things in a certain order over time and just assume what we do is most proper workflow order. I've recently watched the workflow of several longtime professional photographers....and each had a different final workflow order before saving as a TIF. I've also corresponded with several well known PS and photography authors that had different opinions (I don't want to say who). Perhaps the answer is....if I can't see the difference, then it doesn't matter.

Personally (note reverse order relative to OP)...
    I would lose precision last (i.e., bit-depth)
I would lose number of colors next-to-last (i.e., convert color space)
I would final-sharpen with the final size accomplished.
    cheerios :)

  • LOSING SHARPENING AND NOISE ON EXPORT

    My workflow goes like this:
I use LR3 to apply adjustments, occasionally a preset from say VSCO....
While in LR I use, PHOTO > EDIT This photo in - PHOTOSHOP
I do my edits, ADD NOISE, SHARPEN....
    Then PHOTO > SAVE AS.....
I save the photo to my external...
Here is the issue, when I re-open LR the photo is then present in my Catalog and there in LR to be viewed.... from here I export the final size for web etc and I am done
QUESTION IS:  The photo that is now within my LR catalog is missing the NOISE I am added completely, and the SHARPENING is gone, or much less sharp then the photo I have saved in PS.
    HELP
    Thank you very much

In the PS-forum version of this message you said you were using LR3 with PS-CS3.  This is important.
Because your PS is two versions older than LR, the ACR is not compatible, so using Edit In PS will create a TIF or PSD on the way INTO PS, right?  This TIF or PSD is what is in LR—the one before you’ve done anything to the image in PS.  When you do a Save As you are putting the results with your sharpening and noise in another location that LR won’t know about, right?  What happens if you save your output from PS over the top of the file that LR created on the way into PS instead of somewhere else, or are you already saving over the top of your PS input file and wondering why LR doesn’t show the changes?
The second issue is that the communication between LR and PS.  Without that communication LR has no idea where you did your Save As to.  I believe your PS-CS3 is too old to know how to communicate anything to LR—Adobe hadn’t implemented the integration back in LR1 days when CS3 was current.
If you had LR3 sending images to PS-CS5 or LR4 sending to PS-CS6 then things would be compatible and communicating and would work how you expect.
