When ingesting footage via Prelude...

...are all changes made upon ingest, e.g. metadata, markers, etc, included in the results of transcodes done during ingest?
My concern is about handing-off footage to others: should I hand-off only trancoded footage? orignal footage from the camera?
What if I'm passing footage to a non-Adobe user?
I'm just starting out w/CS6 after using only CS2 since its' release, and admittely find Prelude a bit confuseing.
(Please pardon my ignorance).

Hi Michael,
Thanks for inquiring. I'll try to make this brief and clear:
I often record equestrian shows. (Maybe you know what "barrel racing" is? if not, here's a link that shows what it is and what I work with:
http://www.adhocvideo.com/equine/Barrel_Racing/MtnSprArena/index.shtml#sectNBHA082809
(Mouseover and click on one of the many links on that page).
When I record, I (now) do so in AVCHD using a Panasonic HMC-150. I often end up with between 100 and 200 short (approx 30 seconds in length), but individual clips (1 clip per competitior) that I want to transcode and upload to a few web sites, and which I later use to edit and author DVDs. So, I'm looking at uncompressing/transcoding from AVCHD format  to an editable format, then converting/transcoding the edited footage to.mp4, .flv, and .mpeg2 (and in the future, BD).
A reminder that I'm coming from the world of CS2 Production Premium, and am trying to grasp how Prelude might help me in a situation where I have so many "unrelated" clips.
I think (maybe) this should be my (perhaps too-detailed) work flow:
Step 1:
record with camera to SD card >
Step 2:
SD card into computer >
Step 3:
Copy/backup/protect SD card to HDDs >
Step 4:
Create Prelude project
Step 5:
Ingest from HDD to Prelude >
Step 6:
Log and add metadata >
Step 7:
Transcode to editable format >
Step 8:
Edit the results of Step 7 with PPro >
Step 9:
Transcode edited footage via AME >
Step 10:
Upload transcoded footage from Step 9 to web >
Step 11:
Author DVD with footage transcoded in Step 10.
These are my questions/points of confusion:
1) Is the metadata I add in Step 6 also included in the results I get from Step 7? And, does the metadata stay with that result for use in/with/by the other applications within Production Premium CS6? (I've read the FAQs, and just seem particularly dense about how Prelude might help me when I have a relatively large number of unique "unrelated" clips; it seems Prelude is more suited to projects with a large number of related clips, i.e. making a documentary, a short, or a feature-lenght film.
2) I know this probably isn't specific to Prelude, but is the metadata usable outside of the Adobe Prod Premium apps? For example, if I add a rider/competitor's name as metadata, can that metadata item be used/accessed from within HTML coding of my web page(s)? (See the rider's name appear when you "mouseover" the numbers shown in the link I provided above).
3) Is "ingesting" to Prelude really just a way to "link" or otherwise indicate that a Prelude "project" is comprised of specific source clips?
I realize that at least question 2 is probably not within the bounds of what Prelude does or was designed/intended to do, and sincere apologies for that, but I'm beginning to think Prelude may not be very helpful in the specific circumstances I have in mind unless I can access the metadata via HTML or some other web-page coding vehicle. (Am I trying to pound a square peg into a round hole)?
Apologies for my ignorance.
Thanks.

  • Prelude not creating In/Out points when ingesting P2 footage

    I'm working on a Windows 7 (64bit) machine and I'm ingesting footage off of a P2 card reader (connected via usb).  In the Ingest panel I  marked In/Out points on several P2 files using "I" and "O" keyboard shortcuts.  I ingested the footage with the transfer options set to transfer to a new directory on the hard drive (no transcode) with the verify transfer checked.   The files seemed to transfer fine and they showed up in the Project panel.  When I played them in the monitor I discovered that  the In/Out points I set prior to the ingest were ignored.
    Prior to ingesting the P2 footage I ingested some AVCHD footage with a transfer and transcode to P2 Movie.  In that case the in/out points that I added in the ingest panel were respected when I played them back in the monitor after the ingest.
    So, does the setting of in/out point in the ingest panel only take effect if you are transcoding footage?

    Current input suggests creating subclips would be acceptable. So the net result you would see in the project panel after ingesting a clip with In/Outs set would be a master clip (representing the full clip) and a subclip representing the In/Out range specified.
    Is this what you would also expect?
    Michael,
    Thanks for your quick response. Yes, making subclips makes sense...although I guess I don't see much advantage of creating subclips prior to ingest vs after...especially when after ingest you can establish multiple subclips on one master clip.  On this specific project I had lengthy pre and post roll on several shots which I was hoping to eliminate by setting in/out points prior to ingest - so that after injest I would have only clips with relavant action.

  • Ingesting P2 footage with Prelude

    I'm ingesting P2 footage with Prelude (CS6). The first few seconds of the transferred footage have digital hits.
    I've opened the same footage in an old copy of FCP and it's clean. Any idea what to do about it?

    I'm transcoding to P2 and in the process transferring the files from an external storage drive to a working drive on my desktop. (I've used this process before and it worked fine. I'm on a Mac and did upgrade the operating system.)
    The hits are chunky horizontal lines which sometimes may include parts of the shot that are seconds ahead. It lasts a few seconds and goes away. I can post a bit if you like.

  • P2 ingested footage with wrong date created metadata

    Hello, we're trying to standarize all of the media for our systems. Part of this includes ingesting P2 footage using Prelude and encoding it as DVCHDPro quicktime files. I know that the recommended method that adobe gives for ingesting P2 footage is to keep the file structure in tact and use the media browser function of Premiere; this, however, doesn't suit our company's needs of maintaining a relativaly NLE-agnostic media library and having quicktime compatiable discrete video clips of all our media. We're using Mac OSX operating systems, by the way.
    The problem is that, when using Prelude to ingest, it seems that Prelude obliterates the "date created" metadata and file data (e.g. when selecting the "get info" on the clip itself; that file data). After ingesting a clip, if I open it in Premiere, there is no date-based metadata that matches the original record time on the .mxf file itself. Nor when I view the clip in OSX's "get info" does the "date created" panel reflect the date that the original file was created. It seems that it should be possible to write the original "date created" data to the ingested file (in the ingest panel in Prelude I can see the correct "date created" time); FCPX is able to do this when ingesting P2 media using their systems. Is there an option that I'm missing or is this simply not possible with this version of Prelude?
    To illustrate: here's a screencap of the ingest panel in prelude, notice the "date created" column reads 2013-06-28T11:43:05; which is the correct record date of that clip:
    However, after I ingest the clip, both within Premiere and the "get info" panel in OSX, the "date created" now refers only to my import time:

    Thanks both for your responses. I checked the .mxf file "date created" and it is indeed empty (see picture).
    The "date modified time" however, is correct. I do understand that when dragging media directly from the media browser in premiere that the metadata displays correctly; what I think should also happen is that when the footage is ingested and transcoded via Prelude, it should also display correct metadata. As shown in my pictures above, prelude does indeed see the correct "date created" (wherever it gets that information); it just obliterates it after it transcodes the clip; it's not available either in the "get info data" (which, somehow, FCPX does do when importing P2 media through their system) nor (most strangely) in premiere. Any settings or changes that could be made to address this would be appreciated.

  • Ingested footage from p2 and cannon DSLRs not previewing in Lion

    Hi folks,
    I just recently made the upgrade to OSX 10.7.2 so far FC Studio has been handling it just fine.  I have however noticed one thing and I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.
    While I obviously do most of my work and sorting through footage within FCP, I have enjoyed the ability to preview clips from my finder window in Leopard and Snow Leopard... I use it most often when I need to scan through raw footage to find a specific take that I want to reference in conversation with an editing partner, or when I'm double checking that I've got the correct raw footage for the correct project in the correct Capture Scratch folder.
    It would seem that since I installed Lion footage that was ingested from a p2 card, or from a Cannon DSLR will no longer play from the finder window.  I can open that same clip in Quicktime Player and there's no problem, or I can of course veiwe it in FCP... but if I want to take a quick look in the finder there's no dice.
    Other video files that have gone through a pass in Compressor, or even the raw, non-ingested footage from those same sources will preview from teh finder just fine.
    Has anyone else noticed this?  And if so, is there a fix for it?
    Thanks so much,
    avi
    (FYI, I'm on a 27 inch iMac 2.8 i7, 4 gigs ram, running FCP 7.0.3)

    You can drag a file or folder into to Finder's tool bar for quick access -for instance, something that is located several layers deep in the file system but often used. It works in the same way as an Alias.
    Here's one I just made:
    If you delete the original, the ? appears because the link to it is broken:
    You can drag the ? out by holding the command key.
    The Dock will behave in the same way if you choose the "Keep in Dock" option, then delete the original.
    To your QuickLook issue, I'm officially baffled. It might be a good idea to post on the OS X specific discussions forums here with a link to this thread. Reinstalling is something that really should be the very last resort.
    ETA; I just posted for more assistance in the special Lounge area of the forums.

  • No XMP ID written when ingesting through file directory view.

    I found that media ingested using file directory view do not get XMP ID written to them at any point of my workflow even if the "Write XMP ID to Files on Import" is checked on Prelude, Media Encoder and Premiere Pro. Those are mostly files from GoPro, Canon DSLR and Sound Devices PIX recorders.
    Media ingested through specific view mode like AVCHD and XDCAM EX do get a proper XMP ID when ingested. I'm transcoding on ingest so it is not a write permission issue.
    I'm using Adobe CS6 (up to date) on OSX 10.8.3
    Does anyone else have the same issue ?

    Hi jenny.
    Ok my post wasn't maybe that clear, I was talking about the unique identifier that is supposedly written in the Basic > Identifier metadata field when you import files in Prelude, Media Encoder or Premiere Pro with this option enabled :
    For clips imported through specific view mode, it works just fine and they get a long random string of characters generated and written on the Identifier field. For files imported through the basic file directory view, it does not seems to work and the Basic > Identifier field ends up empty. Amongst other things, having this XMP ID avoid cache file conflict for files that do have the same file name. And as we work on multiple project at the same time on a networked storage, we do end up sometimes with different files having the same name used concurrently. No problem when they have the XMP ID, but when they do not cache related stuff tends to be acting weird (like rebuilding and piling up new .pek peak files over and over every time the project is opened, we can end up with thousands of them).
    The fast and easy way to avoid this is renaming everything we're going to import through file directory view but I'd prefer being able to benefit from the automated XMP ID generation.
    Everything else metada related works about fine for me.

  • Will not ingest footage.

    I'm trying to ingest footage from the log and transfer window. I used to be able to do it and now I can't. I have a canon hf 10 and 1 TB external harddrive that i use as a scratch disk cause i'm working on a macbook. I have the setup in 1080i and 60i, which is how my footage was shot. I have the Apple Intermediate Codec checked in the AVCHD Plugin. I don't know what is going on, but when i open the Log and Transfer window nothing happens and it won't ingest my clips. Any suggestions?

    I am having a similar problem with my Sony HDR-XR520 camera. I just got both the camera and MacPro this week. I had FCE seeing the clips earlier this evening, but got the exclamation point and they stopped transfering. I mucked around with some of the preferences and now nothing shows up.
    I have tried both the codecs under the little gear sign on the Log and Transfer window. Not sure if the frame rate makes any difference. There are also settings to mess with on the easy set up.
    Which plist exactly are you suggesting we trash? There seem to be quite a few.
    thanks

    I recently bought an Ipod touch 2nd gen, (Ebay). It's in great shape and seemed to be wiped clean.
    When I connect (via windows computer) to Itunes with usb cord the Ipod icon shows, but the only function you can do is eject. When its in the upper right hand corner and you click on it all you get is a done button, when it's in the side bar right click and your only option is eject, left click has no effect. If I go to "file">devices it's as if there are no devices connected.
    I purchased a song with Itunes on the Ipod itself, and it transferred to my library on the computer automatically .
    I have an Iphone 5 and a nano that are still functioning with Itunes thru computer so I'm thinking the issue is with the Ipod touch. I've reset it several times, rebooted it, with no change.
    nothing on the internet has helped, I called tech support and got disconnected. Should I take it to a retail store? I just don't know where to go next, I'm of course willing to pay for tech or repair. looking for suggestions.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Embedded fonts not displaying when building project via mxmlc

    I have a flex 3 project and I'm trying to upgrade it to flex 4.6 sdk. I have a number of embedded fonts in my application. These display fine when I build via Eclipse/Flash builder. When I build using mxmlc the embedded fonts are not being used. I build the fonts in the same way for both so I am assuming there is some compiler option which I am missing, or which I have that is causing the problem. I've tried every compiler option I can think of and now I'm at a dead end...
    <target name="compile" depends="getswcs, compilemodules">
         <echo message="mxmlc=${mxmlc}"/>
         <echo message="flex.lib.dir=${flex.lib.dir}"/>
         <echo message="flex.extlib.dir=${flex.extlib.dir}"/>
         <echo message="flex.locale=${flex.locale}"/>
         <echo message="flex.locale.dir=${flex.locale.dir}"/>
         <exec executable="${mxmlc}" dir="${basedir}" failonerror="true">
              <arg line="'src/${main}'" />
              <arg line="-o 'bin/${component.lowercase.name}.swf'" />
              <arg line="-l+='${flex.lib.dir}'" />
              <arg line="-sp src" /> <arg line="-accessible" />
              <arg line="-strict" />
              <arg line="-el '${flex.extlib.dir}'" />
              <arg line="-compatibility-version=3.0.0" />
              <arg line="-target-player '11.1'" />
              <arg line="-include-libraries+=lib" />
              <arg line="-locale ${flex.locale}" />
              <arg line="-l+='${flex.locale.dir}'" />
         </exec>
    </target>
    The compileModules builds my fonts, for example:
    <exec executable="${mxmlc}" dir="${basedir}" failonerror="true">
         <arg line="fonts/OCRAEXT.as" />
         <arg line="-static-link-runtime-shared-libraries" />
         <arg line="-o bin/lib/OCRAEXT.swf" />
    </exec>`
    as file:
    public class OCRAEXT extends Sprite {
         [Embed(source='OCRAEXT.TTF', fontName='_OCRAEXT', embedAsCFF='false', unicodeRange='U+0030-U+0039,U+002E,U+002F,U+20AC')]
    public static var font:Class; }
    I don't think there's an issue here, since the fonts are already built via my compileModules before building the application in Eclipse, where the fonts display correctly.

  • Domain users cannot connect to the network folders when logged in via rds remote apps

    Hi,
    recently I setup an RDS farm for remote apps on server 2012 r2.
    all users can connect to the apps published. no problems there.
    but when users connect via rds they cannot connect to the networkfolders and cannot store the resultance of there work (docx and xlsx files)
    all users are normally connected to the networkfolders using a small login batch file handing down the unc path needed. when I log in as domain admin, also using a login batch, connections are setup correctly. It seems to me to be an security issue on the

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    We use WMI to communicate with the RDSH server. Various issues can cause WMI to deny access or return error codes. Here's a few things you can try:
    1.  Check if the "TS Web Access Computers" security group on the RDSH server has incorrect permissions in DCOM and/or WMI:
       For checking DCOM security settings:
       1. Start the Component Services MMC snapin
       2. Navigate to Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer
       3. Right-click on My Computer and select properties
       4. Go to the COM Security tab
       5. Under Access Permissions, click the Edit Limits button
       6. Ensure that TS Web Access Computers is in the list, with all of the permissions set to “allow”.
       7. Under Launch and Activation Permissions, click the Edit Limits button
       8. Ensure that TS Web Access Computers is in the list, with all of the permissions set to “allow”.
       For checking WMI security settings:
       1. Start the WMI Control MMC snapin
       2. Right-click the WMI Control node and select properties
       3. Go to the Security tab
       4. Navigate to Root->CIMV2->TerminalServices
       5. With TerminalServices selected, click the Security button
       6. Ensure that TS Web Access Computers is in the list with Execute Methods, Enable Account, and Remote Enable set to "allow"
    2.  Verify the RD Session Host server's firewall allows WMI calls.
    3. Verify that the RD Connection Broker hasn't lost its trust relationship with the domain.
    4. See if non-RDS related WMI calls can be successfully made to the RDSH server. This can help differentiate between a general WMI issue and an issue calling the RDS WMI provider.

    No third party applications installed; no gestures changed. It just starts acting up like I described a few times a day. I'll be browsing the internet and go to switch desktops and it suddenly doesn't work.

    Hmmm, Norton extensions are broken again in Firefox 4.0.1. It seems that Norton didn't allow for Firefox 4.0 security updates when they updated their Firefox extension for Firefox 4.0. Norton says they'll have a fix in two weeks. A Norton user posted a fix in this forum thread.
