When iOS 5 comes in the public do I have to download the latest iTunes to download on my iPod touch 4?
Do I have to download latest iTunes to get iOS 5?
Most likely you will need to update iTunes to the latest update, some times you can update devices on some lower version of iTunes. But to have less issues and to recieve the update you will need to update iTunes once they send the updates out.

I understand it's "obsolete", so do I have any hope of continuing to use it or will I be forced to buy a later model?
Try running 'CMD' as Administrator (CMD will get you to a DOS prompt)
Then type in --> Netsh Winsock Reset
Then reboot your computer and then try syncing... this worked for me last night. -
I uploded the new itunes software and now my ipod touch is not getting reconized in my itunes. I went through all the trouble shooting support from apple. But I do have a avast antivirus on my computer i wonder if that is what is holding it up

i have windows 7 and a2nd gen ipod touch and i just aquired an ipod classic which is a 5th gen from 2005 with a 30 gb capacity. can i download a video movie or episode and songs from the current itunes i use for my ipod touch or is there a different one i should use? please help.
You can plug the iPod into the same iTunes library as your iPod Touch and sync whatever content you like to it. There is no limilt to the number of iPads, iPhones, or iPods you can sync with one iTunes library, account, or computer. How you sync one device will not affect the syncing preferences of the other.

I have set up another user screen on my PC (MS Windows 7) & downloaded iTunes and then downloaded the latest software version. The sync has taken over an hour so far, is this normal? It is my niece's iPod and she has her music library on her laptop but has not downloaded the latest software - does this cause a clash if the iPod is registered to a different PC? Any help or guidance in an idiots simple way would be most appreciated. JT
It is the update firmware is taking so long? It can take an hour or more for the download.
If you do the update on other than the syncing computer, all the music and apps will not be on the iPod after the update see:

Plese see above.
Repair Apple Application Support.

I am trying to attach an Ipod touch to an older Power Book G4.
Itunes says that the Ipod cannot be used because it needs Itunes version 9.2 (running 8.0.1).
When I try to install the latest Itunes version 10.3.1 Mac says ("Open failed" requires Mac OX S 10.5.Click here and install the software.

After the latest iTunes update neither of my iPods are recognized by iTunes, so I am unable to sync. When I run diagnostics it says no device connected. My laptop sees my iPod so I know it is connected. I have tried all of the recommended iTunes fixes and none work. I tried deleting and reinstalling both an older version and the newest version. The older version would not reconize my music libray. Any thouhts?
I tried deleting and reinstalling both an older version and the newest version.
Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

The contacts and calendar data on my iPod touch will not sync with my Mac
I have a 2nd generation ipod touch, and an iMac running iTunes 8.2.1.
I have been away from my mac for a few months and have entered a lot of contact and calendar info into my ipod touch.
Now, when I try to sync the contacts and calendar data on my ipod touch with my mac, the data will not sync to my mac.
Similarly, for the last couple months, the contact and calendar data on my ipod touch has not been able to sync with my mobileme account.
I cannot afford to lose the contact and calendar data on my ipod touch.
Can anyone kindly inform me how to fix this syncing problem without losing such data?DGKSA wrote:
I ended up entering the data onto my Mac, then nuking my iPod touch with a restore.

Will the latest iTunes version nullify operations of older ipods?
My son bought the latest iPod Nano (Gen 7) and found he needs to run the latest iTunes version supported by OS Mountain Lion in order to use it. We are running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (OS X Leopard).
To run the latest, Mountain Lion, will require 2 upgrades on our part. Apparently we have to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard before we can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
This is all fine, but my son thought he saw something on an online forum that if we upgrade to Mountain Lion, our older iPods and my other son's iPod Touch ( all purchased within the last 4 or 5 years) might not be able to run/load/sync tunes on the newest iTunes version.
This seems counter-intuitive to me and may be (and probably is) complete bulldust. What's your knowledge of this situation? My 3rd gen iPod (2003 model), which connects using FireWire instead of USB, still works fine with the latest iTunes. My 4th gen iPod (2004 model) and 1st gen iPod shuffle (2005 model) also work fine. I don't have one to try, but I'll bet even the very first iPod from 2001 would work fine. Everything on the Internet is NOT true...
The iPod nano 7th gen specs
http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/specs.html
say the Mac System Requirements are "OS X v10.6.8 or later, and iTunes 10.7 or later." So, technically, it does not require Mountain Lion, and the latest version of iTunes (11) works with Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
So, the minimum paid for upgrade (for you to use a 7th gen nano) would be for Snow Leopard, which is available from the online Apple Store for $20.
NOTE: If the Mac is a PowerPC Mac, you cannot upgrade it to Snow Leopard (Intel-only). -

Is there a way to be notified by email when iOS 6 comes out?
I was wondering if I can be notified by email when iOS 6 comes out.
Bear in mind, when iOS6 does come out, for the first 48-72 hours the servers will be swamped as 'everyone' tries to be the first to get the update. So those that hurry may have to struggle a bit more than those that wait a day or go for it at a non-peak time.
After every update like this the forum is usually very busy with 'i can't get the file' threads...and the key is usually to just be patient and possibly wait for the initial rush to fade. -
When ios 7 comes out what update will my ipod touch 4th gen get??
when ios 7 comes out what update will my ipod touch 4th gen get??
It appears that the iPod 4 gen is below the cutoff for iOS 7
See http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonesoftwareterms/f/What-Devices-Are-Ios-7-Compatible .htm where it say support for iOS 7 only goes down to iPod 5 gen.

I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.
