Standard troubleshooting steps are reset, restore, restore as new. Have you tried the reset? Hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go

Try to reset the device:
Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once and use it to upgrade all iPads in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac. I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8. Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes. I had to download iOS 8 again. It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file.
2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app. I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result. It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8 Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps. (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

I agree with Csound on that, a family, even with a lot of devices will have to individually update. There are enough nuances in the iOS for different devices that you need to download for each. If you had 200 iPad 2's then there might be an enterprise way...but not a family with a mix of devices.

Purchased Tiger When Leopard came out

When did you purchase the imac? IIRC Oct 1 was the release date for Leopard. If after the release date, Leopard is free or $8.95 maybe. If it was before the Leopard release, Then that's what you get. Given all the reports of Leopard being spotty, pun intended, it might not be so bad to have the stable Tiger rather than Leopard where there a still apps that are not ready.
Check Apple's site. Spend some time browsing the Forums and you'll know more about what's going on.

TS1398 Frustrated lost WIFI on IPAD 1 the day the new IOS came out, which 1 does not have. Tried everything listed, what next?

Have done everything possible, spent hours reading every tip possible. What can I do, is Apple aware that lots of folks who did not update to IOS6 lost their WIFI on the 18th?

Has nothing to do with the iOS 6 release on 19 Sept. and which can't be installed on the iPad 1.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Now getting Error: Live file system repair is not supported" This is on an external drive Western Digital 2TB WDC Ears drive, split into three - the other two parts can be verified. Any help appreciaited.

Well I have to say, I have tried it again today, and disk utility is saying it is OK. I was doing it to do the screen shots for you LowLuster.
So whatever it was, has disappeared, and it was having a bad computer day.... but to all of you thank you, So perhaps LowLuster should get the solved my question, as coming back the next day...worked.

You aren't charged when you pre-order an item, you are only charged when it's released and you download it - at any point up until them you could cancel the pre-order, so you are only charged on downloading.
