When Ipod's connected to computer to sync, Itunes freezes
I connected my ipod to my computer about a week ago to update the songs, and in the middle of the syncing, it stopped syncing and said it could no longer sync because it didn't recognize the songs. I kept disconnecting and connecting trying to sync it and it would go for a bit and then say the same thing. During one of the tries, I disconnected the ipod and all of my music was gone. I reconnected it to sync it, and it loaded about half of my music and popped up the error message said it couldn't continue just like it had previously been doing. I restored the ipod multiple times to try and fix it.
Now when I connect the ipod to the computer, it freezes up my itunes and I can't do anything. My ipod still only has half of my songs on there. I changed the drive that the ipod uses thinking that might help something. It didn't.
Itunes still freezes up when I connect the ipod.
Any idea on how to fix it?
The first thing that you should try doing is putting your iPod into disk mode and restoring. This is basically a deep clean of the iPod and clears up a lot of issues that a regular restore usually does not.
Then if the issue continues, it most likely needs service..warranty status

Whenever I try to connect my ipod to my laptop my itunes will freeze up. I try opening my ipod using "my computer" but then that will freeze up as well. I'm trying to restore my ipod to see if that will help, but since my itunes freezes, it can't detect my ipod, therefore I can't restore it.
My ipod is set to where I have to manually put songs on it instead of it syncing automatically (unsure if this has anything to do with the problem?)

Yet Another Faulty iPod Classic - Connects to "computer" but not iTunes
In Oct 2009, I purchased 160GB Classic and is now out of warranty so unable to replace, and i am not too keen on buying another one (NZD $470 RRP).
It had been working as per normal until Dec 2010 when I tried to sync the iPod on newly updated iTunes (10.1) then it started to freeze during sync and now, it doesn't sync any longer. It is howing as "connected" on the iPod and in "My Computer", but doesn't show up in iTunes at all.
iTunes also freezes (doesn't work whatsoever) while my iPod is plugged in to my computer. I have tried everything that the "Apple" help sites suggest (the 5 "R's", formatting, disk mode etc) you name it, but to no avail.
Trying to fix this problem is becoming frustrating and time consuming. My wifes iPhone 4 works perfectly so I know it's not the computer or iTunes itself. As I (had) trust in Apple products, I would expect this to last for more than 15 months.
I have no idea how this all came to be, and would just like it to work as normal again. What a way for Apple to earn its' "money"...
PLEASE, if ANYONE can help here, it would be very much appreciated.I purchased 4 x iPod Classic 160gb units between July 2008 and March 2009 (and a 120gb Classic with which we have not had a problem). One unit worked for one day and had to be returned and was replaced with a new unit. The other three all failed within the 12 month warranty period and were replaced by Apple. Of the four replacements, three have now failed about 15 months after they were replaced. Of course the units are outside warranty (in particular due to Apple only offering the greater of 3 months warranty or the remainder of the original warranty). The units haven’t been subjected to any forceful knocks and as demonstrated by the lack of physical marks on the units.
To have 7 out of 8 units fail in this timeframe is in my opinion indicative of a fundamental flaw in the build quality or design of the units. After putting my case to Apple Australia I finally received a reply confirming that the units were out of warranty and nothing could/would be done - but they did offer a "thank you gift" of a credit of up to $125 at the Apple Store if I spent at least $425.
I replied that this wasn’t satisfactory but took up the credit whilst it was offered to at least get some discount off a new 160gb Classic (more reliable I am led to believe!). I am now out of pocket over $770 with replacement three units and still have one remaining unit that could die at any time.
Apple is no longer replying to my emails. If anyone with similar experiences would like to join together to put pressure on Apple to make good, or pursue other actions via consumer affairs, please reply on this forum. -
What can I do when iPod is connected to computer and freezes iTunes?
Yeah, everytime I plug in my iPod with a USB cable to my computer, it freezes iTunes. As soon as I take it out, it unfreezes. And I have the latest version of iTunes. What do I do?

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Having itunes open when ipod is connected
Nano 4th generation--iTunes always opened when iPod was connected to computer; now it doesn't and going to Devices and scrolling down Summary to "open when ipod is connected" is greyed out and will not allow me to check it. Even going to the iTunes preferences does not offer this selection.
You meant that you can't place a check mark in the check box "Open iTunes when device connected" ?
Just do a little test: Click on Music and see if you can put there a check mark. -
Just bought new iPod touch. When I connect to computer to sync it tells me "iTunes could not connect to this iPod touch. Could not send a message to device." Not sure if it is b/c of an older version of iTunes but connecting via wifi sync unacceptable
What version of iTunes is on the computer? You need at least 11.4.

Ipod does not appear in my computer or recognized in itunes. When ipod is connected a window pos up aking to import photos off the device and when this is closed the ipod cannot be recognized. Any Help?

Just did a full uninstall of all Apple software (manually also as described in tech note).
Can't find anything else, other than I can't seem to upgrade to iOS 5; one app (NewYorkTimes) refuses to be moved and does not show on left column of iPod apps (but does show in the Apps purchased). I've reinstalled directly to iPod but can't figure what is corrupt.

I just had two hours with frozen system and cancelled the Sync on the iPod and shutdown/power off the PC. It showed what looked like 99.99% download and install process.

Very frustrated and confused, still....The only clue I have is when I go to Device Manager I see an error for device;

So the error "this device cannot start (Code 10)" and the error mesages about the hardware leave me thinking Apple's device driver support is at fault and is an issue if not THE issue in all this. -
When Ipod is connected to Itunes, music that is used to have is listed, but, when disconnected, the ipod appears as if there is no music. Hasn't happened to the movies. Anyone have any ideas?
Since you did not mentioned about sync issues or problem, error messages.
You have to Sync the iTunes library with your iPod.

One thing you might want to see is if within Windows if the iPod service is running... As there are certain services which automatically get installed when itunes is loaded. These notice the device and loads the app..
Just for reference, here are my Windows Services and their status:
Apple Mobile Device - Started & Automatic
Bonjour - Started & Automatic
iPod Service - Started & Manual
I thought that a 4th service existed, but can't find it...
Have you tried uninstalling iTunes and downloading to reinstall it again, that might help.. Or else it has something deeper do to with your computer itself!

When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer. It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection. I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes. It does not give an error message as to why its doing this. Just says it encountered a problem. I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working. Its extremely frustrating.

(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now. -
How to "Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected"....
...without having them sync automatically? I'm able to do this on my MBP just fine. The solution on my MBP is to uncheck "prevent ipods, ipads, iphones from syncing automatically" under Devices Preferences. Then I'm able to check "Open iTunes when Ipod is connected" under my iPod's Summary Options. After that i can then go back a uncheck "prevents Ip.... from syncing automatically".
Unfortunately, this option doesn't seem to be available to Windows users. or is it?

Mikethis will solve half of my issue while coincidentally causing the other half of it.
I want to be able to:
Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected
AND
Prevent my ipod from syncing automatically *(when this is enabled the prior feature becomes disabled) -
Itunes will not start when ipod is connected
3G nano ipod when connected to windows xp,, Windows Expoler opens and shows ipod as "M" drive. But itunes starts only when I click icon on my desktop and dose not start when ipod is connected. When itunes runs it sees my ipod and all works fine. I have the box under Devices checked to start itunes when ipod connected. Thanks for your help

Are you talking about the *Open iTunes when this iPod is connected* option from under your iPod's Summary tab? If not, make sure you have this option ticked as well.
It might not hurt to try and remove and re-install iTunes and all Apple related software using these instructions.

I wish to transfer all the music on my ipod (synced with my home computer) to my itunes on my work computer. Is this possible? I am concerned if I plug my ipod into the work computer, which has itunes but no music content, that it will automatically sync and wipe all the content from ipod. Can anyone advise?
Only if you use a third-party utility such as Phone to PC and only if you use the same Apple ID for your other computer.
