When is it safe to delete a cloud backup?

I'm apparently paying for cloud storage to save a 10gb backup of an old phone of mine I retired in November 2013.  My head wants to click "delete" and free up all that space, but my heart says "wait!  what is in that 10gb, is there anything you have forgotten about but will miss dearly if you delete it??"
Is there any way to figure out the content of that backup?  It seems pretty black box.
Would included in that 10gb be movies and tv shows from itunes (actual files, not just links back to the itunes store)?  And if so, does that make any sense?  Why should I have to pay Apple to store something that I can download again for free from their own site?

Thanks, and...crap!  That means I really DO want to know what is taking up all that space before I delete it.  Or just keep paying $20 a year to not have to make such gut wrenching decisions...

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    After deleting the backups, go back to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and make sure iCloud Backup is set to On (if not, turn it on).

  • When is it safe to delete older Time Machine back-up files?

    I have a 2 TB back-up drive for Time Machine back-ups. It is half full. Is it safe to delete some of the older files? If so, which ones? If the first back-up is a full back-up and not an incremental back-up, I would not want to delete it would I?

Now all of my text messages from after that are missing. I need a lot of the missing texts. Even though my 4s does not have any service all of the texts are still on it... • If all the photos from my iPhone 4s Camera Roll show up in iPhoto under Library- Photos, is it safe to delete them from the iPhone and not risk losing them?

    I am getting messages about being out of space on my phone for taking any more photos. I am scared to delete anything with all the photo stream and syncing that happens cause I don't want the photo to delete in many places at the same time.
    So, 1) when is it safe to delete from the iPhone? 2) I feel like I have multiple copies of photos stored between the phone, Photos Library in iPhoto and all my albums in iPhoto. Is there a best practice document on how to manage your photos for space savings?
    I've looked, but can't find my answer clearly in the forums.

    IF you have successfully imported your pictures to your Mac http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083  then it's safe to delete it from your phone.
    If you want the pics back on your phone, just sync them back using itunes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

  • Is it safe to assume that once you've used a backup of an old phone to restore a new one that you can delete the old backup?  I am running out of "cloud" space and want to free up space

    I purchased an additional 20gb of storage and I am getting a message that I am out of space on the cloud to backup my Iphone or my iPad.  When I checked my settings it seems like it's because my old iPhone backup is still being stored.  Since I used my old lphone4 backup to load my new iPhone5s would it be safe to say that I can delete that backup now since all the info that was on that phone has been transferred to my iPhone5s.  This way I can free up storage in my icloud (instead of buying additional storage?)

    Hi Mcchen425,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    As a precaution, I would suggest backing up your iPhone to your computer via iTunes as well as iCloud.  Then you can delete one of your two backups.  The article below will explain all of your options for deleting data or backups from your iCloud storage.

    It is used for syncing/pushing data to your other devices, and for backing up. It does not add to the physical capacity of your device.

  • When allocating memory on stack for vm_args.options, is it safe to delete?

    I am allocating memory to hold options that are passes to the JVM before calling JNI_CreateJavaVM().
    Is it safe to delete the option string? i.e. does the JVM copy the option or does it just retain the pointer?
    e.g.
    const char* cp = loadClassPathFromConfigFile();
    const char* cpSysProp = "-Djava.class.path=";
    char* cpCopy = new char[strlen(classpath)+strlen(cpSysProp)+1];
    strcpy(cpCopy, cpSysProp);
    strcat(cpCopy, cp);
    JavaVMInitArgs vm_args;
    JavaVMOption options[1];
    options[0].optionString = cpCopy;

    If you call Create again it will throw as error saying that it already exists.
    And you can get the existing VM via the appropriate method (whatever it is) and it still works.
    So one could call it for example when exiting the application, and delete the memory then. Only real purpose then for doing the memory cleanup is to keep a memory check tool from complaining.
    Conversely one shouldn't wrap the create/delete into a method that one wants to call repeatedly in the app, because it won't work.

    My old iPhone (I no longer have) is still an active device on my iCloud backup list.  Is it safe to delete it?  Can I be sure everything on the cloud for that old device has been transferred?

    The only way the backup from ilcoud has been transferred to a new apple device would be if YOU restored the new device with the mentioned backup. There is nothing 'safe' about you deleting this backup if in fact you have not restored the new device with this backup.
    Good luck Friend.

    How do I use icloud to restore my documents that were in Pages? Pages got stuck in "waiting" to update and when nothing else worked I deleted it and reloaded Pages. Everything I can find is about wiping everything out and restoring everything. I don't want to restore everything just my Pages documents (and numbers and keynote that also locked up during updating).

    What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
    Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
    iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
    If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.

  • Why does Itunes Windows download Numbers, Pages, iMovie and iPhotos in Library and I can't even open it. It is taking up space, safe to delete?

    Thanks for helping me out in advance. I recently installed Itunes and figuring things out.
    So I click the thing that said downloads available and the download screen started dowloading the apps below. It takes a huge amount of space in my tiny hard drive (256 GB), I clicked, double clicked, hyper-clicked and nothing really happened.
    Is it safe to delete in iTunes, or windows explorer window?If I delete it would it delete it from my iPhone? Pardon for my newbness..

    Hello traderjohn,
    You can absolutely delete those apps within iTunes. If you ever need to download them back in you can do that as well. It should not affect anything on your iPhone and when you sync your iPhone. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Is it safe to delete iTunes media that is no longer available in the iTunes Store?

    There is a support document that states it is OK to delete content locally so long as the content is available in the cloud depending on your geographic location.  As I'm in the US all media types are available.  From the document:
    You can delete items that you bought from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store from your iOS device, Mac, or PC. Because Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) plays content from the cloud, you don't need to delete items from your Apple TV.
    Before you delete an item, make sure you can download it again. If you can't or need to pay to download it again, back up the item before you delete it.
    What I am still not clear on is if it is also safe to delete content that is no longer available in the iTunes store?  Will it still be available for previous purchases?
    I prefer the quality and off-line availability of iTunes media over Google Play but I've had issues recovering deleted media in iTunes in the past and so have less anxiety about the security of my purchases on Google Play versus iTunes.  Can someone confirm if items no longer available for sale in iTunes are or are not still available via the cloud?

    Thanks for the reply although I'm not too happy to hear it.  What's awesome about the cloud is no longer having to keep up with any physical media.  The promise of that is realized with everything else (my work, music, books) besides movies and TV.
    I wonder how Google Play will handle movies/tv that becomes unavailable?  Google Play does allow you to download media in some circumstances (on Android and iOS) but is generally intended  for streaming.  Maybe relying on a physical copy as I do with iTunes should make me more comfortable with it and not less.
    I will come back to mark your reply as the solution as it becomes clear there is not a contrary position.  Thank you.

  • I had to change my apple ID now how do I update icloud without deleting all cloud data on the computer?

    My provider is terminating email service so I had to change my apple ID.  I did that in iTunes but now my icloud on my PC wants me to sign in under my old id, I don't see a way to update to the new ID without deleting all cloud data on the PC.  Is there another way so I don't have to resync everything from the cloud?

    Check the list in the link below, how to change all services, after you changed your Apple ID:
    What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204071
    In particular, for iCloud:
    Update your Apple ID or password on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, and Apple TV.
    iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
    Go to Settings > iCloud.
    If you're signed out, enter your updated Apple ID or password. The data in iCloud will automatically appear on your device after you sign in.
    If you're still signed in with your previous Apple ID:
    Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm. You might need to enter your password. Your data will remain in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
    Enter your updated Apple ID or password.
