When is it safe to disconnect my iPad from iTunes?

I'm running Windows 7. I have the most up to date version of iTunes. I have chosen to manually sync my iPad since iTunes and Windows are not playing nice; iTunes regularly crashes during a sync and all I use iTunes for is transferring music that I've ripped from CDs onto my iPad.
Choosing Eject gives me the message "Syncing iPad!" which is exactly what I DON'T want. The device is then stuck 'syncing' for about a half hour until I finally get the message that it can't sync because the device timed out. Then I unplug the device.
My question is, if I'm not actively transferring a file or doing an update do I *have* to choose to Eject the device or can I just unplug it?
As an aside, I've already run through all the troubleshooting for iTunes issues; this includes testing all my USB ports (they all function fine), doing a full uninstall/reinstall/update of iTunes, updating Windows, I have to disable my AVG anti-virus completely by shutting off the services before rebooting before I can even consider plugging the iPad in and opening iTunes, about the only thing I *haven't* done is run a registry cleaner. Sorry but it shouldn't be necessary to sacrifice a chicken before transferring music to my iPad so I just want to know if I can unplug the thing without first ejecting it and leaving it to sit for a half hour to decide it can't actually SEE the device...

I've done all the iPad troubleshooting steps also. Nothing has actually solved the issue; the closest 'solution' has been to completely disable AVG before even looking at the iTunes icon and picking up the cord to plug in the iPad. Even then it's very hit or miss.
I'm currently looking into alternatives for getting mp3 files into my iPad so I can just completely scrub iTunes from my desktop.
But thanks, I'll just start unplugging the iPad whenever it is I next get up the nerve to spend 4 hours trying to move music files over.

Usually it's because you are not making internet connection via wifi.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

I have the same issue, except I have an iPad that I used with my Windows machine and iTunes.
Syncing worked fine. I now have a new iMac (yea), but when I connect my iPad to iTunes on the iMac,
click my iPad device name and Apps at the top all of the Apps appear on the
screen except they are greyed out. I asumme there is some sort of login, but I'm danged
(trying to be polite) if I can find it. It is where?

On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button. iOS devices will start playing tracks from iCloud as they download and will store them so that you can listen to them later even if you don’t have a network connection. Apple TV only streams songs.
The songs are downloaded to your device.

Check your system for possible Malware. But you have to do it in WIndows Safe Mode.

Start your computer in "Safe mode with networking", go to this link download a free version of Malwarebyte.

Movies are not re-downloadable anywhere but in the US at present, so unless you are indeed in the US, you'll need to restore the movies from your backup.
