When is it safe to power off?

Hi,
I have a Mac Mini set up to use the "Safe Sleep" mode.
When I switch the machine to sleep, the screen turns blank and I have no idea when I can actually turn the power off.
For example, I have waited until the the tiny LED starts to slowly blink but that does not leave enough time for the system to commit the memory image to disk.
What do I do? Count to 20 and hope for the best?

(Why do I need to switch the power off, you ask? Does it matter? The system's connected to a UPS and I rather leave that off since it is not used that often.)

I understand the difference between "shut down" and "sleep" (deep, safe or simple).
I wish to turn the power off whilst maintaining the system's state and this can be done but switching the system to to safe sleep.
My only issue is knowing when the system has entered safe sleep completly (and the memory image is fully committed to disk).
I would prefer not to shutdown. I am aware of the new "auto save" and "restore" features in Lion but I need to keep the machine state unchanged. Safe sleep works.
When is it safe to power off after entering "safe sleep"? Please?

Go to your Finder. You will see the drive listed with a little arrow with a bar below it next to the drive. Click on that to "eject" it.

Toshiba 46G310U random power off/ power on

My Toshiba 46G310U was about 1.5 years old when it began the random power off/power on problem. Interruptions varied between 20 min to several hours. Found this forum when looking to see if Toshiba might have issued a recall or declared a way to fix the problem suffered by many people. Contacting Toshiba did not help. Took the TV to an authorized Toshiba repair store. After two weeks they notified that they could not fix it, either. The random nature made me suspect something was over-heating.. I placed a 5-inch fan behind the set positioned to blow into vents on the right back area of the set. After several weeks we now have uninterrupted viewing unless we turn that fan off. The TV then reverts back to its former nuisance behavior. Hopefully this will help others. If it does, use the information and in return make a donation to Wounded Warriors veteran fun in your area. I fixed it. The backlight and contrast in pisture control is at full 100%. I turn it down and most other controls to off. It stopped and plays as new and the backlight dimmed is barely noticable. So its all good. If you have any others that are having the off/on 45 second interval.. Let them know to turn backlight less then 75% and it should be fine.

IPhone 3G reboots when I try to turn it OFF

I have an iPhone 3G running 3.1.2. Lately, I noticed that when I choose "Slide to Power Off" it turns off but then restarts 2-3 seconds later. I have another month of warranty left. Should I return it? Don't ask me to restore because I don't want to go to iOS4 (unless I can restore to 3.1.3 without the SHSH). I have tried hard reset etc. but nothing will work.
Anyone else getting this problem or any fixes?

Is it plugged into a computer or power adapter when you try to shut it off? If so, I believe it will automatically power back on. I'm pretty sure that if I shut mine off, then plug it into my Mac or a power supply, it will power on automagically.

Turn Off vs Full Power Off?

So I have both these options when I go to 'Turn Power Off' in the menu. But I'll be honest, I don't see any difference between the two. The only thing that is different is 'Turn off" tells me it will turn back on when my alarm goes off.
Is this right? Because I would have assumed 'Full Power Off' would have closed any apps I had running, like Facebook for exampe which sometimes freezes forcing me to reboot.

The BlackBerry has two power-management modes:
If you use the Power button, or click Turn Power Off on the Home screen and select Turn Off, your BlackBerry will turn itself on again when the alarm activates it or when it is set to turn on automatically.
If you select Turn Power Off on the Home screen, then select Full Power Off, your BlackBerry will not turn on again until you press the Power button.
So if you use "Turn Power Off" and you set an alarm to get to work in the morning, you will have to bring donuts to everyone.

KT4V turns power off at 55°C with Athlon XP 3000+ FSB333

Hi there,
I installed a brand new Athlon XP 3000+ FSB333 this week on my MSI KT4V, with a ICE SP-A03 CPU fan. It runs at 48°C when idle, and when CPU load increases with high consumption softwares it goes slowly to 55°C then ... Powers off abruptely !
This behaviour is steady and reproducible using BurnK7.exe. The threshold is always the same : 55°C.
This temperature range is definitely normal for AXP3000+. So far, I did not find any Bios parameter or mainboard switch able to leverage this threshold.
How can I fix this problem ?

When changing processor you should clear CMOS.
When seating it one should:
- power off and unplug
- take mobo out
- remove the old heat sink and processor
- after placing the processor in...
- make a "virtual" seating of the heat sink, so it'll fit the socket good, with heel
- then remove the protective plastic in this case, or put on thermal grease, and place the heat sink.
Time taken when seating the processor, is time saved for the future. Do it good better than quick. The paste wont dry up, and if it doesn't get dirty there is no rush.

When waking from "sleep" screen turns grey under the pointer and the computer is effectively dead. Have to hold power 'off' for five seconds to regain computer.

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down. You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

I am loosing configuration when I power off my Cisco 857 router

I bought new Cisco 857 router from the shop. Router must have been used before as I couln't go in with default username/password cisco/cisco.
Well I followed instruciton and reset password to username and password. Now I finally connected to the Cisco CP express over my IE browser.
I found out that somebody was using a router from the shop so this is why I coun't log to it in the first place. Anyway problem is that when I changed configuration and applied settings it remembers it until I power it off. When I power it on again it remembers all settings from that shop.
It reverts everything back: IP address, previous level 15 account and password - everything like after password reset.
I tried it again and it again lost settings. So I found following instruction:

I followed it and changed again all settings on the router. My settings are again lost after power off/on. I noticed that when I do first bit it does show
0x2102 not 0x2142 like they think that is password reset mode.

Alternatively, after password recovery you can modify the configuration to be what you want, and then issue:
   write memory
to save the configuration. You can then verify that your changes have been saved to the startup config by issuing:
   show startup-config"
The only good thing is that when I switch off a router it erase configuration except my new password which I created after password reset. Everything else is getting vanished (ADSL settings, DHCP, routing ) everything. Even new admin accounts I created.
Well have a question to your above comments. I am new in Cisco so please put as much detail as you can for me to understand. When you say modify configuration do you mean to go to Cisco CP Express graphical interface and then connect router to hyper terminal and execute above commands?
Why router doesn't remember this anyway. There must be some option to change in configuration to make thing permanent when I hit apply changes in Cisco CO Express otherwise it is pointless to heve it.

I understand your concern about this router and somebodie's configuration details as you want things to be un-used when you buy them - true. ADSL details belongs to the shop which sold me the router so that is why I don't make a big problem about this. We take most of hardware from this shop and have discount and many good deals with them so I think they have been just testing it and forgot to erease their config. It might be that someone has returned router to the shop and they have repaired it and tested it.
I hope this is a normal behaviour of this router as I have option to replace it in case this is a fault.
Could you please write me step by step guide how can I make changed options stay permanently on router?

Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc. If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.

How can I reboot my Ipad when I do not have access to the power off screen?

My device slide off my couch while in its cover. IT was working afterwards, for about 5 min. I sat it down while I took something out of the oven and was back maybe 5min. or so later. Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reboot/Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
Restore: Connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer, backup, and then select Restore to Factory

Can my USB Drive be configured to power off when the iMac is powered off?

The s.o.p. for shutdown should be to eject the drive, turn it off then shutdown the iMac. The s.o.p for startup should be to startup the iMac then turn on the external HD. Many external HD manufactures do support a sleep function that allows the drive to sleep when the iMac is sleeping.

You have Zoom on... double tap with three fingers to turn it off. Go into Settings > General > Accessibility to disable it.
