When is it time to invest in a high-def editing setup?

I own a ten year old digital editing appliance that I'm considering replacing with Final Cut Pro. I want to start work on some niche documentaries that I plan to sell online. I made one documentary at home about six years ago that I still sell online.
I've never bought a HD TV because I don't watch broadcast television. I find conventional DVDs on high-def screens very grainy in image quality ... downright unwatchable ... so to this day I still watch all my DVDs (homemade and store-bought) on a big tube television set.
Personally, I don't want a high-def TV for watching old movies and 70's TV shows on DVD. I'm perfectly happy with my tube TV, my 2001-era editor, and my twelve year old standard-definition Sony PD150 cancorder which I just had serviced and cleaned.
Heck, 20% of my viewing pleasure still comes from videocassettes, which I can get at the Goodwill for 25 cents a piece.
But ... now... I have some ideas for some new niche video products. Only problem is ... I haven't followed the conversation about high-def at all. I'm wholly and utterly ignorant. Pretty much all I know is that BluRay won the format war … and I know I can look up 720p, 1080p, 1080i should that information become important.
That's the extent of my knowledge. I honestly have no idea whether my Sony PD-150, my old editor, and single-layer DVDs would be just fine ... or whether they would result in a bunch of refund requests when I start selling these new DVDs I want to make.
God help me. I just don't keep up with what other people are doing.
And googling "do-I-need-to-dump-my-90's-era-digital-camcorder-and-standard-definition-editing- appliance-in-favor-of-ten-thousand-dollars-worth-of-new-high-def-cam-and-editing -gear-if-I'm-going-to-make-another-sellable-DVD" didn't really yield much.
Can anyone help me here?
1) Is anyone in the lower-mid-range video business … like a budget wedding guy or a niche how-to video … still using standard-def stuff to churn out acceptable product in high volume?
I've sold hundreds of copies of my DVD online and two weeks ago I got my first ever refund request … the guy berated me for selling a DVD in standard definition when (he said) the "commercial standard" now is high-def. No one else has ever complained. So now I'm left wondering if this guy is the first of a new generation of customers who would not tolerate a standard-def product … or if he's just a dork who needed to complain about something.
2) How does manufacturing a high number of copies of a high-def video work? My 50-minute standard-def movie fit wonderfully on an inexpensive 4.7GB DVD. Running off copies was cheap and painless. I understand that high-def discs are some 25GB. Are you guys with your new Mac and Final Cut Pro working with HD buying these expensive discs for large volume runs? Are even decent bread-and-butter wedding shoots or corporate training films these days getting burned to BluRays?
3) Does it make sense to trade in a perfectly good 90's high-end standard definition digital cam for a new HD cam when I'm still going to burn it to a conventional DVD?
4) Is my gear still perfectly acceptable for budget projects? I really don't want to pay for Final Cut Pro and a HD burner ... I would only get one if my old editor is flat-out obsolete, which it certainly isn't for editing home movies.
Note: "Budget" does not mean poorhouse. I'm talking about "working" niche videos … competent (non-broadcast) megachurch sermon DVDs … homemade documentaries … non-Rolls-Royce weddings … small business promo videos ...
… the stuff that working joe videos are made of.
What constitutes "reasonable and acceptable" these days, when just about everybody has a high-def TV set they're watching these things on?

When I made the move from SD it was painful. It was just before the digital broadcast change over and when I hooked up my new Samsung 37" HD TV to my cable box I almost hurled.
since then, almost all of the broadcasters have caught up with HD transmission and almost all broadcast stuff in 1080i or 720p look amazing.
Standard Def DVDs are another story. Well done commercial SD DVDs can look quite nice when playing back through my new Samsung Blu-ray player. The folks who compress down to SD for the big studios are indeed rocket scientists and they're doing things that most of us simply can't afford to do.
Plus, the scaling technology in players and TVs has come a long way as well. So Don't throw out your standard DVDs just yet.
Should you consider a Hi Def camera? I'd say Yes, The time has come. If all you were doing was posting 480P online I'd say use your camera til it croaks. but the optical delivery is a factor for you.
Authoring your own BD for mass duplication? That's a little more complicated still. There are licensing issues involved in Blu-ray authoring which are complex. It's one of the reasons that we probably won't see Blu-ray hardware in Macs for a while. I don't think you can duplicate as easily as you can with DVD. You can burn your own one at a time if that's a possibility for you.
Shooting HD and delivering SD DVDs? It can be done. But compressing so that you end up with a satisfactory product is sort of a black art. You'll see lot's of discussions online about how many people are disappointed with HD to DVD, some claiming that their SD to DVD projects actually look better.
My latest technique for getting respectable DVDs is to first downrez in Mpeg Streamclip to an anamorphic SD file still in the Prores codec. Then I use Bitvice to do the mpeg2 file.
The bottom Line.
If you can afford it, get a new camera, BD burner and learn how to author BD. The authoring software is not fully baked yet for mac users but you should definitely head in that direction ASAP. You can even incorporate SD footage in an HD timeline and the SD footage is much more palatable than SD DVD.
On the up-side, you might be happy to know that you missed the worst of it. Be thankful that you were able to put it off so long. There are many other people out there who rode the bleeding edge and suffered a great deal of economic and emotional trauma.
good Luck!

I updated my iphone and when it came time for activation it won't work and keeps telling me to try again. At the top it says "No Service" and I have my SIM card in and a good WiFi connection and have connected it through iTunes but it says I have no SIM card and need to disconnect and insert my SIM. I don't understand why this keeps happening and it's been going on for a wile now. I have tried over and over again to get this iPhone to work but nothig is happening. I've even gone on the website for support (apple.com/support) but cannot find anything that will help me with this situation. Can someone please help me find a solution to this problem? I have been without a phone and do not have money to buy another one and it is crucial for me to get it fixed. Thanks.

What computer operating system is involved in the Premiere Elements 11 and 13 issues? Same computer or different ones? Are you installing from purchased download installation files or from purchased installation disc? Does Premiere Elements 11 work completely on this computer whereas 13 will not?
Let us go through the typical drill so as to take nothing for granted.
    1. Does the problem exist with or without the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled? Are you working with an individual home computer or in a
    school or company network?
    2. Are you running the program as Administrator and is there any "domain" account involved?
    3. Is your video card/graphics card up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
    4. Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on the computer with Premiere Elements?
Let us start by ruling in or out any of the above, and then we can decide what next.
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • HT201250 When I open time machine, everything outside of the last 5 weeks is faded and the dates are gone.  Have I lost those back-ups?  Thank you.

When I open time machine, I only see dates of the last 5 weeks.  The bars before those dates are faded with no dates beside them.  Did I lose those backups?  Thanks for your help.

Does anyone know how to display (in LabVIEW) the memory use during execution of an image and data acquisition VI to predict when it is time to cease the acquisition to prevent the program crashing?
I am acquiring images and data to a buffer on the edge of the while loop, and am finding that the crashing of the program is unpredictable, but almost always due to a memory saturation when the buffers gets too big.
    I have attached the VI.

  • I bought my mac with iMovie in it when it comes time to upgrade it, it doesn't let me upgrade and says to sign into the account I bought it with, but it already came included when I bought it from the apple store. How can I upgrade it?

Like I said when I bought my mac in the apples store, iMovie was already included. When it comes time to upgrade it, it won't let me and it says to sign into the account I used to purchase it. But I didn't purchase it, it came along with the computer. How do I get it to upgrade?

Try opening the Mac App Store and go to the Purchases tab. See if you see the preinstalled iMovie App there. You may have to accept it into your Apple ID if you have not done so already. Then it should upgrade.

  • Why is so hard to get a good deal when it's time to upgrade!

I dont understand this at all, All I Want is to get the same service plans as my neighbors and family. I have been a Verizon Fios customer since the service was introduced years ago. And, I was never happier, until it came time to upgrade.  And it happens every time.
Tonight for instace I again tried to get a better deal.  So I checked what was being offered to me on the website. For basically the same service, It's more expensive!  So I found a great deal online, I called in this time. Apparently the deal is only available to NEW customers. So I attempt to explain what I use, Limited cable, the normal main channels. I mainly use my Apple TV and stream.  So I was offered a cheaper plan, with adeal for HBO. (Sweet)
An hour later - the wife screaming she is missing a few " Normal " Channels - MTV, Animal Planet, Cooking... Basically ALL the channels worth watching to her. So, I called back and canceled the order. This sucks!
As it turns out, it's cheaper for me to keep my existing service. The only offer you gave me was for faster internet, and it cost more! It is completely disheartening to know that I recommended your services to friends and clients.
Why is it so hard to sign on to a better deal when it's time to re-commit to your service. You make such good offers, but they are only available to new customers. Loyalty really does mean nothing today. Not just because I pay my bill, but because I believed in it enough to tell others about this service and how happy i WAS on a daily basis.
I hate Comcast with every bone in my body. But if I can't get a deal where I can be happy with not selling my soul, Ill go to them.
Just state what it is - Why are you hiding the fact that Basic Cable  is Basic Cable.  Labeling everything with HD is misleading and almost a direct point to mislead a customer. It's like saying water  is just as good as beer, they start from the same state.
Not everyone is looking at the web page when talking on the phone.
MTV and Animal planet are "Premium Channels"  - What?
I have had the same hardware since I started, Everything I own is wireless so up and download speed are totally dependent on what is connected. But since I use my own hardware my personal network is faster. The up/Down connection won't make a difference. So upping my speed is not a benefit unless you are planning to install fiber for me in my walls, i have the hardware.
Hire someone that knows Mac's - I get tired of answering questions for you all day.

I recently called and was offered an upgrade with fios perferred hd, 75/75 internet, and 2 yrs free for all movie channels for $118 a month. I called to complain that I cant pay my bill online and their first response was to see how they can upgrade my services. Keep calling and hope you get a good rep.

  • I have a WD 2 tb hard drive that I want to use to back up my Mac Pro quad core.  How do I create a back up startup disk?  Also, when I used Time macine, it only backed up users and not the system or library folders.  Ideas?

I have a WD 2 tb hard drive that I want to use to back up my Mac Pro quad core.  How do I create a back up startup disk?  Also, when I used Time macine, it only backed up users and not the system or library folders.  Ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

  • When i run Time Machine to back up my computer onto an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. I don't know when it is safe to disconnect the external hard drive - which is store in a separate location.

When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed.  This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer.  I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer.  So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.

Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up.

  • HT4413 When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, only some files and applications and setting are transferred, not all of them. In my latest back up I have them all. How can I fix that?

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

  • Can someone please help asap! just bought fce 4 and tried uploading some footage from canon 7d and when in the time line there is audio but txt saying "unrendered" knew to programme help would be much appreciated.

and when in the time line there is audio but txt saying "unrendered", new to this programme and any help would be much appreciated.

Any time Final Cut Express must perform more calculations than your computer can handle in real time, you need to render. Rendering is the process of creating temporary video and audio render files for segments of your sequence that Final Cut Express cannot play in real time. When you render a segment of your sequence, Final Cut Express substitutes a render file for the segment during playback. Render status bars above the ruler in the Timeline indicate which sections can play back in real time and which segments require rendering.  To render just click on the sequence menu and select render selection then click both.
