When light is green will I be sure to get a usable signal?

when light is green will I be sure to get a usable signal?

My Airport Express is plugged-in high on a wall and has a green light.
My mac is near it and I do not get a usable signal.
To verify that your Mac is getting a usable signal (or not), you will want to calculate the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) from the location of your Mac.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
You can easily find the Signal and Noise value using System Profiler on your Mac.
ref: Click on the Apple icon on the menu bar > About This Mac > More Info... > Contents > Network > AirPort > Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise
While your still in the System Profiler, note the value for Transmit Rate.
These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
SNR Guideline
40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the green light indicates that is receiving and boosting the signal, why don't I get a signal?
As Bob has already mentioned, a green status light basically is telling you that the base station thinks that it is properly configured. Unfortunately, it does not indication signal or connection quality.
Does "extending" mean increasing [boosting] signal strength and extending the signal to a "close enough" computer or next "Airport Express" in a daisy chain?
Yes, "extending" will boost the signal strength at the location of the extending base station.
Is the strength of the "extended" signal dependent on the strength [adequacy] of the signal received by the Airport Express?
The strength isn't, but the bandwidth is. The following graphic does a pretty good job of explaining it.

When upgrading to Lion, will the documents, photos etc get wiped off..?

All it does is update the OS.
Which in no way implies that you don't need a backup prior to upgrading. While extremely unlikely, anything can happen in the process.

  • AX: No connection when light is green.

My AX doesn't work when the light is green. When I soft reset it, I have 5 minutes of connectivity, but when it goes green, no connection. And it doesn't show up in the Utility. It will show up when the light blinks orange. Hard reset hasn't worked, and I haven't had a successful factory reset.
    I believe the firmware (?) is V6.3.

  • ITunes can't connect to my new Airport Express even when light is green and see it with Airport utility. Please help!

    Hi,
I'm using iTunes with my iMac and like listen the my music collection in my Hi-Fi which is 20 m far from the Mac. Because of the distance in my flat and other obstacles I'm using a power line. I installed the Airport Express through the Utility and no problems: Airport light is green and configured. iTunes air see it but it can't connect to it.
I made several resets, plugged and unplugged the power and no change, but Airport light is always green, see it in iTunes and the Utility.
    This is driving my crazy!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for reacting to my question.
Yes, I did reboot the router, unplugged and replugged the Airport Express with ro result .... iTunes cannot connect to the Airport Express. I'm using power line to carry Ethernet because between my Mac and AE there are about 20 meters, but problems started since I updated AE version to version 3 ...
It is also non sense because the Utility sees it and then suddenly disappears ! but light remians green ...
I think there might be something wrong with the new firmware versions ...

  • When I publish HTML Help from FrameMaker 12, I get a usable .chm, but if I copy the entire output folder to a network drive, I get a "Navigation to the webpage was cancelled" error instead of the content that shows locally.

I'm sure I'm missing something basic here, but any assistance is appreciated.

    Hello,
My white McBook (2008 or 2009) recently stopped turning on.  When I hook up the Magsafe power adapter, the light shows green, but the computer will not turn on, or make a sound.  I've tried the re-boot option, but nothing works.  I first thought I needed a new battery because the lights at the back are all off, but shouldn't the computer turn on once the power adapter is hooked up and the light on the Magsafe adapter shows green?  I'm a computer doofus, so please be kind.  Please advise!  Thanks in advance.

  • My macbook(2008) has been working well until a few hours ago. I tried plugging it in to several outlets but the light stays green no matter what, It will not charge. Also it will not stay on or turn on if I unplug it from the outlet, anyone have any idea

My macbook(2008) has been working well until a few hours ago. I tried plugging it in to several outlets but the light stays green no matter what, It will not charge on any outlet. Also it will not start when it is unplugged when my battery is at 50%. It also will shut down immediately if I unplug it from the charger, even though it says it isnt being charged by it. Can anyone help with this problem?

So you have the 13" aluminum notebook that just says "MacBook" on the display, correct?
You can get a new battery for $100 from Other World Computing here.
Alternatively, you can get one through Apple for $130 here.
I personally would go through OWC - they're a highly-recommended third party for these kinds of parts and their batteries work just as well as Apple's.

  • When I first plug in my power cord it lights up green and then after a few seconds changes to red.  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

When I first plug in my power cord it lights up green and then after a few seconds changes to red.  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Apple systems in MBP have self-maintaining charging systems.  If the battery is less than 95%, the charger light turns orange when plugged it.  It will charge to 100% and stay green then will hold on charging until the battery drops to 95% again.

  • My battery isn't charging, and when I unplug my power cord, it immediately dies.  There is an "X" inside the battery icon, and the power cord light is green...how can I fix this?

    Hi,
I bought a Macbook Pro last February, and this is the first time this issue has occurred.  My computer has been working fine, but this morning the battery icon is showing a big "X" through it, and when I unplug my power cord, the computer shuts off.  Also, the power cord light is green, which I take to mean that it can't be charged anymore.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks!!

I had similar issue with one of the macbooks in the office. Make sure you've got latest firmware installed (run Software Update). This resolved the issue for us instantly (you may need to reboot mac AFTER firmware upgrade for this to work).

    Hi there 8472kck!
I have some information for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue a little further. That information can be found right here:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
and that information comes from this article:

My 13.3" macbook pro will not power up.The battery indicator light does not come on.The Mag safe charging light flickers green and red dimly.I had a cell phone connected to the USB port.

This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
    1. Take off bottom case
    2. Unplug battery - blurry image here: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/03cC79r5Dx4/0.jpg
    3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
    4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
    5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
    6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did)

wanting to use extreme at base and express in another part of the house

How is the express getting internet? What modem is it plugged into?
How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • Macbook not charging - light remains green. Do I need a new battery? (CoconutBattery specs inside)

    Hi everyone,
I just got back from a two week vacation to find that my black  Macbook isn't charging. When I put the charger head into the laptop, the light remains green, and the battery isn't charging. I ran a CoconutBattery diagnosis on the machine and got these results:
    http://i.imgur.com/mMobh.png
I'm not exactly clear on how to interpret these results, but I believe it's saying that the battery doesn't have any capacity for charging. Will buying a new battery solve the problem? I'm not sure if Apple sells the batteries for the older Macbooks now, either.
    Thanks for any help!
    Josh
