When mac wakes from sleep, the hard drive wakes but the screen is black

It's a problem I've been having off and on for quite a while with my ~2010 MacBook Pro. Sporadically/randomly, when I wake my computer from sleep or turn it on, the status light turns on and the hard drive makes sounds like it's on, but the screen stays black. The only way to get it on again is to manually hold the power button to shut if off and start it up again. Sometimes, the same issue reoccurs when I restart it and I have to manually restart it 5 or 6 times until it finally turns on normally, or I just get tired and give up. I've had everything done at the genius bar, from getting a new hard drive to running diagnostic testing. Nothing works. Any suggestions??

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

I have thumbnails on my iPhoto library but when I click on them the screen is black. I have had my computer in 2-3 times for this issue and the library is corrupt, or so I was told. This doesn't make sense since the photos are obviously in my library some where. Any thoughts what is going on?

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer

Is this an app bbbc? IF it is I would contact the app developer and see if they can resolve the issue for you.

Duplicated photos when importing pictures from an external hard drive

I've just bought a Macbook Air and am trying to import all of my photos from an external hard drive (I was previously using Windows 7).
I started off by importing them to iPhoto but lost all of my folders and found it hard to organise the pictures so then stopped doing that, deleted all the pictures and started again. My next attempt was to open 'Pictures' in the Finder window and I then dragged and dropped the folders of photos from my external drive into this window. The pictures all copied inside the folders but as well as the original photo it's also created another folder for each picture with the same name as the photo but ending in .files. Inside the file is two additional copies of each folder starting with the name 'vcm_s_'. One photo seems to be a high res version and the lower a low res version. See an example of this below:
Anyone have any idea why it's created these folders and how I stop it happening?

well good sign or good sign maybe a strong word
it mean that not all of the device have been damaged by the fluid
but it does not really mean that the screen will ever work again
when drying in rice make sure you don't
1 conceal it so the vapor can't escape or it will not dry enough
2 make sure to leave in on a heating source like a heated floor or radiator to speed up the proccess of the vaporising

Error when copying songs from cd to hard drive

When I switched from a windows computer to a mac, I copied all of my itunes songs on to a data cd. When I insert the cd into my mac and try to copy the songs onto my hard drive, I get an error saying "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". I am pretty sure that you can copy as many songs, to as many computers as you want, but you can only authorize five computer to play the songs. Why is this error popping up? and How can I copy my songs?

This means the data on the disc is not correct (a bad burn). Try again.
Do you have an iPod or a USB stick.flash drive? You can transfer files that way.
I would not recommend burning them to an audio CD.
The songs were originally converted to AAC, thereby losing data (quality).
Wif you burn to an audio CD and then reimport as AAC, you will again lose data (quality).

When Lion awakes from Sleep the whole system is sluggish? Must restart computer to get it back up to speed.

Upgraded to Lion and when the computer wakes from sleep it is incredibly sluggish. Takes 1-2 minutes to switch between applications, typing is very slow, etc. Only thing that cures it is restarting the Mac. Is this something others have experienced and can it be fixed?

I have that problem on my Mac mini. The mini becomes so dysfunctional as to be unusable after it's been idle for a while. Even DVDs won't mount (or eject) without a reboot. <edited by host>. It's disgraceful. Apple should be ashamed of this Lion release, it clearly isn't ready.
I don't think there is anything you can do short of re-installing Snow Leopard until Apple releases enough bug-fix updates to fix the Lion mess. In the mean time, just hope that Lion doesn't eat your Mac, especially if it's a mini.

When iMac awakes from sleep, the screensaver has frozen

I recently added a new user account to my iMac (running OS X Lion v. 10.7.3). When no one is signed in, I have it set so that a screen saver comes on over the login screen after 5 minutes and the computer display goes to sleep after 15minutes. Whenever I awake the computer, the screensaver has been frozen (presumably where it was when the display went to sleep) and I have to aimlessly move the mouse around, "uncovering" the login screen beneath as I go until I can find the user I want to log in as. The screen saver doesn't go away entirely until I've logged in. Is there any way around this without setting the computer to go asleep and not just the display? I often have programs running in the background that need to be.... I have tried changing the screen saver several times and it always occurs. Thanks!

Upon resuming from sleep, the monitor goes black

the laptop is actually booting, but the screen flashes on for a sec then goes dark. I can still see the screen and icon to log in, but the backlight is out, and I cannot log in actually. if I close the lid and wait then open it again, it does it again. I takes sometimes 5 times for it to finally stay lit and work again. This also happens if I do a hard boot, sometimes taking up to 8 times with a hard boot. I thought it might be related to the OS so I installed a partition and installed windows but it happens the same to windows. It never goes out when I am working on it, only if I let it go to sleep or power it off and then try to resume or turn back on. Any ideas?

Fix - *Dont give your iMac a static IP*
go to your Main or First routers settings and Give the iMac a SET IP so that it never changes. Then renew your DHCP lease and that set IP will come up and stay there. FOREVER!

Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
- Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear. (For iOS 6, holding down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)

I just downloaded mavericks the new os on my MacBook Pro two days ago. This morning everything was fine.i had the computer on for about 2hrs when I looked over and the screen was black. This usually happens after awhile. This time it won't come on at all.

I just downloaded the new Mavericks everything was fine this morning then my screen went black as it usually does when I leave it for an hour or so. I usually push the on button once and it comes back this time it didn't. I hold the button down and it'll go off I hold the button down and I hear it make the start up sound but nothing comes on the screen it's totally black. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with downloading the new Mavericks does anybody have any ideas. Is there any way to reboot when you can't see what's on the screen. I believe it's coming on but I cannot put in my password because I cannot see where to type it in.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

Installing mac os from an external hard drive

I had setup a Windows Partition and I'm wanting to completely remove it and had a single partition restored with Mac OS. I've restored the Mac OS to an external HD which I'm booting from now as I have completely deleted the Bootcamp partition and made the Macintosh HD a single partition again. I need to get the Mac OS on my external HD back onto the single partition that's on the Mac itself. I'm struggling to do this and would like some steps if possible. I've booted into the recovery utility that's on the external drive and I'm trying to image the Macintosh HD with the restore that's on my external HD. The problem I'm having is finding where the image is that I need to copy. I've read that I should be looking for a .DMG file but cannot locate that. Am I going down the right path? Please help. Running a SERVER on a only temporarily available disk is surely not what this OS was designed for.. Servers must be up 24/7 in order to serve their clients. Also Lion Server is only an app, running on top of normal Lion, so the App must be actively running all the time.
Disk Permissions in Lion ( client or server ) are not that different to Snow, but Lion mounts all partitions as read-only on the Root level, so that write is only taking part in the /Users and /Library directories. ( /System only if validated installers are launched with Admin rights ) .

When I go to view a video I downloaded from iTunes the screen goes black and won't play. Tried turning it off multiple times. Still downs not work

Worst part is I am on a plane and now have time to kill as I can't watch my movie right now

Quit the video app and try again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit the app by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the video app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the app. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Launch the video app again and see what happens.
If that doesn't work - go to the home screen again and swipe to the right to bring up the search feature. Type the name of the movie in the search field at the top. If the movie shows up in the search - tap on the icon and hopefully it will start playing. Let it play for a couple of minutes and tap done. go back to the video app and see if the movie appears there. If so you should be able to play it from there.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the iPad and launch the video app again.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
