When MacBook crashes it takes my settings with it.

I've had an intermittent problem that is eluding me.  This is particularly frustrating because I thought switching from Winders to Mac would provide a more stable experience.  I'm not impressed up to this point.
At random intervals (seriously, I have no idea what the common elements are) the Mac crashes.  I'm using the latest OS 10.6.8 and update all sw when ever prompted.  Usually one that happens, it required 2-3 reboots before it finally behaves again.  At this point many of my settings disappear.  Specifically the touchpad settings, doc configuration and I'm not sure what else until I fool around enough to bump into a problem.  The worse problem is it always loses my iTunes library (which honestly, was the main reason I went to a Mac and is now the bane of my Mac experience).  Most recently, something crashed and I had Chrome set to launch automatically.  Since I'm using the latest Chrome, that caused the Mac to crash every time it launched until I finally booted to safe mode and trashed Chrome.  After the dozen or so reboots I'm back to fresh settings and a missing iTunes library which I'm trouble shooting now.
Can anyone explain why my settings disappear?  How do I fix/prevent it?  I'm about to put this thing on Craigslist and go back to my 3-year-old Dell.
Thanks!
David

Hey there Sazzle15,
If your iPod is still not being seen by your computer when you plug it in with the USB cable, I would recommend the troublehsooting information in the following article, without knowing precisely what troubleshooting steps you had performed. Start at the "Check USB connection" section and work your way down as needed:

  • HT3777 if i restore my macbook back to its factory settings with the grey install disk that came with my macbook, will this wipe out the bootcamp partition? (i don't want it to)

i have asked this question a few times now, but i have not got the answer i was looking for:
my macbook is currently on v10.6.8 (a snow leopard version)
the factory settings of my macbook is v10.5.6 (a leopard version; i know that using the grey install disk that came with my macbook will restore my macbook back to this version)
i know that by restoring my macbook to the factory settings, some apps will go (e.g. flash player 12, app store) and other apps will be downgraded (like itunes)
but i am talking about BOOTCAMP. it isn't an app, it's a partition of my hard drive.
my question is, will i still have the BOOTCAMP partition after i restore my macbook back to its factory settings? if so, will all the folders and files in BOOTCAMP still be there?

    Hello there, Timmayy24.

  • I get an "SSL" error when trying to configure my mail settings with Gmail.

I have been trying to configure Gmail on my IPod and I keep getting a message that it cannot connect with SSL. I did not have this problem on my old IPod, which I replaced recently. I restored the settings on my new IPod from a backup on my computer and everything else has been working fine except the mail. Has anyone else had a a problem with Gmail? Any way I can get around it?

    - First try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, go to the GMail settings and turn off SSL.  Try and then if necessary, turn it back on.

  • MacBook Crashing when Camcorder connected...

Bought the Insignia 720p HD camcorder from Best Buy. Read that plenty of people have used it with their Macs, albeit they had to download alternative movie editing software etc...
The problem is: When I connect it via USB 2.0 to my MacBook the MacBook crashes. It pops up with a bulletin that states I need to hold down the power button or hit the restart key to reboot my Mac. When I unplug the camcorder and restart, no problems. When I try to restart with the camcorder still plugged in, it states the same every time until I unplug it.
Driver Problem? Other issue? Any ideas? Obviously some people are using this with a Mac so I don't understand the issue...

I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.

  • Midori Crashes when handling files, takes other apps with it [SOLVED]

I have been experiencing some issues with Midori that cause it to lock up. When it locks up, it tends to take other programs with it (VLC, aMSN, some text editors, etc). Why is this and is there any way to prevent it? When one process locks up I dont want to have to kill 3 or 4 other processes every time. I assume this must have to do with some dependancy that they are all using (gtk?).
Some other programs like xterm and worker are not effected. Is there anything I can do so that when Midori locks up I only have to kill Midori?
    Thanks!

I just looked around and found some messages that look relevant. This is how I reproduce the error (one way)
    1) Right click on an image in Midori and go to "Save Image"
    2) Select my save location (home/myuser) and click save
    3) The progress bar at the bottom of Midori indicates that the file is saved
    4) Click on the folder icon to the right of the progress bar
    5) Midori instantly freezes as do an assortment of other programs (bluefish, nedit, vlc, aMSN)
    6) Eventually the dialog comes up about midori being frozen and if you want to send a signal to exit or whatnot, this makes the window go away but I cant open another instance of Midori until I pgrep midori and kill -9 pid
The messages I found are visible if I crtl+alt+f1 and look at the linux terminal where I started X from:
/usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: Mozilla: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: Epiphany: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: konqueror: command not found
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: chromium-browser: command not found
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: google-chrome: command not found
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: links2: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: Line 452: links: command not found
I am assuming those messages happen when the system is looking for the correct program to open a file with? I will look into this and post my solution here when I find something.

Only Apple could hamstring and tie Mac OS to Windows. There isn't any other than whether you can download the drivers into Windows (you can) but Apple puts a block on the installer setup even if your mac does not support it.
Windows 7 needs at least Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.3 is what you should already have. And you are not getting security updates if you don't have at least 10.6.8 as was pointed out.  --- you arent using Software Update as you should. And you should backup and clone Mac (and Windows) as well.
You need Mountain Lion to use Boot Camp 5.x which supports Windows 7 & 8 and 64-bit.
I would upgrade to Lion if you can realizing that Rosetta and PowerPC are no longer supported though.

Is there a download of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software if I'm not using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3?
Yes, you can download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638
How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.
Note: If the flash drive or hard drive was not attached when you installed Windows and was inserted after restarting into Windows 8, double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file to start the installation of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. • Apps crash when MacBook not connected to external monitor

I have been using my macbook connected to a Samsung T240M 24 inch monitor/tv for several months now with no problems at all until 2 days ago. Everything functions perfectly when the computer is connected to the external monitor, however, when I disconnect it and go mobile with my computer, almost every application I try to use crashes with the single exception that I've found so far being Firefox.
Does anybody have any clue what could be causing this bizarre behaviour? I've tried different display settings when not connected to the external monitor to no avail. PLEASE HELP!!!!

dude...that question is barely worthy of a response!!! Of course I have! I also shut it right down before disconnected the monitor.
I'm thinking this will be the thing that finally makes me get off my lazy butt and upgrade to Leopard (hoping that will fix the problem)! It's such a strange thing to just start happening after months of no problems at all.

most of the time, i cannot even restart the MacBook. if i disconnect ethernet or turn off WiFi - no problem. it goes through the startup flawlessly.
one other strange thing happening is i have two websites that will never completely load. no problem on the iPad or iPhone 6, only the MacBook. but these websites don't have to be open when the crash happens.
any ideas? i am running Yosemite 10.10.1. oh, and it happens when i am running Safari, Chrome or Foxfire, though it seems to happen a lot more since the last Safari update. thanks...

    OK, for sake of argument:
    1. Quit Safari
    2. Check the ownership and permissions of Home -> Library -> Safari folder and write those down (click once on the folder and select Get Info from the File menu, and make sure the triangle is dropped down on Ownership and Permissions so all the privileges are shown).
    3. Drag Home -> Library -> Safari to the desktop
    4. Reopen Safari
See if the issue reproduces itself. If the issue doesn't reproduce itself, then it is something corrupt in the Safari info for your user. If it does reproduce itself, something is wrong with your user level internet settings or possibly Corefoundation settings which Safari is sensitive to.
You can always quit Safari and move back that folder to where it came from and make sure the permissions are retained.

  • HT1338 my macbook crashes and cant send error report, when i try, it says "error report failed"

My macbook crashes and when I start it again, there's a crash report and I click on send to apple, after a minute or so it says failed to send to apple. It has happened many times and I think it's getting worse since I can't send any reports.
    What should I do?

    Hello Firah,
Don't worry or even bother sending the report, Apple doesn't want to hear about 10.5.x at all... if they eer did.
Copy & Paste a few lines here, maybe a couple dozen, we'll take a look.

  • How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?

How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?

You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.

  • Can anyone help read my crash report? My 2010 macbook pro keeps going black screen with looped sound

I've had this laptop since 2010 and it's been pretty good up until about two months ago when it would just randomly crash. The screen would go black and if there was sound going on, the sound would just loop on that single second like a broken record. The only way to get it out of that is to hold the power button and then turn it back on. When these crashes would happen in the beginning it would only be when I had Adobe Photoshop running, now it just happens whenever I'm simply using the internet browsing through Tumblr, Youtube, and Facebook.
Every time I turn my computer back on I get a crash report like this:
