Phone is on orange contract and today during calls I can't hear the other person and the phone thinks we are still connected. Help please!

I've got that problem too sometimes. I think it's a mistake in iOS and it will be fixed in another iOS-update

Try to isolate the issue. Use earphone and if the issue still happens then it might be the phone issue.
- If earphone works fine then it may be the mic on the iPhone. Try cleaning the debris on the iPhone. Finally a restore of the device and try to set it as a new device. Tha will isolate if it is a software or hardware issue.
- You can take the phone to Apple store once you have tried all this.

when using the phone function i can barely hear the other person on the line.. the speker volume is at the max.

remove the thin plastic cover, its not the protective kind its a shipping one. It is covering you ear piece.

Just picked up my iPhone 4 at the Apple Store. Tried to make a phone call the the call volume is so low I can barely hear the other person calling.
The speaker volume is not much better. The other person can hear me fine and says the sound is great.
The volume dots are all the way up.
The settings sound voulme under ringer is all the way up.
ipod volume lock is not activated.
Any other settings to check out?

OK now I don't feel like I'm the only one. I've also done a hard reset and still suffer from the same issue.
Since it seems to be the popular question, no the plastic is no longer on my phone.
To call the volume I'm hearing a whisper would be a overstatement. This is a much bigger issue than the antenna. The phone is basically unusable without headphones. Unfortunately I'm not very close to a Apple store to exchange.

i was wondering if it is possible, this person i believe uses a Android or Iphone, for the camera to be turned off for video chat? I can never see the other person but they can see me - and i can see myself during the video chat. My video which they see i also see takes up the whole screen. You have to enable it in SKYPE. Open up Sykpe click on tools then select options . When that windows opens select video settings. Then you well see select webcam click on White box select your web cam choices. Windos 7 HP computers it is called HP web camra filter. I just close out the filter stuff if I am not using it during chat session. Some HP computers call it cybrlink web cam. If your web cam isn't listed yet the web cam still works in other applications your Skype software might be corrupted. Once the connection is made you should automatically see the other person full screen, with a small inset picture of yourself. Normally you only see yourself full screen after you initiate the call prior to the other person accepting it. Are you both connected to wi-fi and are you initiating the call by tapping the FaceTime button on the other person's contact?

Clear the receiver
The iPhone receiver won't work properly if it's blocked or dirty. Here's where the receiver is:
Follow these steps, testing after each:
- Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as a case or film.
If you have a new iPhone, remove the plastic film on the front and back of the device.
- Check the receiver opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the receiver opening with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
- While you're on a call, turn on speakerphone. If you still can't hear, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try calling again later or from a different location.
Restart and update
1. Restart your iPhone and test again.
2. If there's still no sound or poor sound quality, update to the latest version of iOS.

Can't hear the other person when I am talking

WHen I am using Skype or FaceTime on my iPad, I can only hear the other party speak if I am silent on my end. I have to keep asking them to repeat because I can see their mouth moving but I can't hear them. In other words, the sound only works one way at a time. Is this normal, or is there a settings change that make so that sound works both ways at the same time? Is it a hardware or a software limitation?

There have been similar issues with iChat and I will use that as an example first.
In iChat the Mic needs to be On (in the Video menu).
It also needs to be listed in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video section > Microphone Drop down and this needs to match ther Mic set up in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
In addition to this the Mic needs to be "turned up" high enough in the System Preferences to work with the app.
So If you Buddy cannot hear you it is your Problem when it comes to iChat.
If you cannot hear the Buddy it is much more likely that they have not set up the Mic in System Preferences or have the Mic Off in iChat.
Moving to FaceTime you will find a Mic Setting in the Video menu (if you have two or more Mics).
If you do then the System Preferences > Sound > Input and the volume setting there needs to match the choice in the App.
As it is your contact that you cannot hear you need to get them to check their settings first.
As for your end, it will be worthwhile doing a PRAM reset.
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

the other person can hear you fine, but you can't hear them?
the simplest thing is the volume rocker on the side, while you are on a call make sure your volume is adjusted all the way up.. after that make sure you don't have the plastic covering the speaker
after those try a soft reset by holding the home button and the sleep/wake button until you see the apple logo, if that doesn't work try a restore from itunes.. if you are still having the problem after that it is time to call apple 1-800-myiphone
