When making a PDF in Indesign CS5 crashes?

Is there any way to reset the PDFs Presets in Indesign. The High Quality PDF (that is a preset already in Indesign) started to crash ages ago. I just made up new PDF Presets. Now it seems that when making PDFS whether Press Quality or the ones I have made myself it crashes. I launch Indesign then can make a PDF but then when I open another document it crashes again? Any help greatly appreciated

Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for directions to to produce a Hang report, then a forced crash and report, and put both of them on Pastebin.com, not here, and put links to both of them here. We may be able to pin down the problem from the reports.
I'm about to quit for the day, so either someone else will help you, or I'll pick up again in the morning.

  • Why does black turn grey when creating a pdf from InDesign CS5??

Why do blacks turn to grey when I create/export a pdf from InDesign CS5?

Unfortunately, things like this are rarely glitchy little programming errors but deep, by-design, problems with using colour management. Usually you are getting exactly what you asked for, just not what you want, and the more colour management options there are, the more likely this is.
There are many possible causes, but one of the easiest to do is and hardest to spot is applying a CMYK profile in InDesign export, and a different one through Photoshop settings. This is actually demanding that colours be converted for the worst! Since your print workflow will be different, a work-around of rich black is likely to make things worse.
So the first thing to check is whether the colours you indended made it to the PDF, indeed. Output Preview is the first tool to use (as well as inspecting plates, you can hover over points to check the colour mix).
Also, go to your PDF export under the "Output" tab which includes colour and PDF/X. Either send a screen shot, or read off all of the the settings there.

  • Problems making a PDF from Indesign CS5

Hi friends. I have recently switched to CS5 and I find that I usually need to close the program and then reopen it before I can make a PDF. It says it is working in the background but all it does is spin without creating the PDF. Anyone else having this problem?
    TED

I have been reading this thread and am very confused about the assertion that somehow a problem encountered in the initial release of InDesign 7 will require any user "to pay more to get a fix!" There is no known fix at this time, for free for for any charge. And Adobe does not charge anything extra for the dot releases with the fixes for problems reported by users or discovered internally.
If someone on this thread really believes that they were given that type of misinformation by someone at Adobe, please contact me off-forum (click on my name for my e-mail address) with particulars (when and who told exactly what with regards to obtaining a "fix") and I will gladly follow-up on this ASAP.
BTW, contrary to assertions made here, yes, testing was done with PDF export both internally within Adobe and with a reasonably large group of pre-release external testers. The problem did not come up even with very complex InDesign documents hundreds of pages long. That doesn't mean that there isn't some problem that really needs to get resolved ASAP, but rather, despite attempts to provide wide test coverage, there are circumstances (including user-specific configurations, drivers, OS versions, etc.) that simply cannot be unmasked until literally thousands of users get their hands on the software. Adobe makes the best effort to respond to these issues as quickly as possible of course trying to make sure that any "fix" doesn't break other features.
              - Dov
PS:     Update - at least one beta tester did in fact see this problem but the InDesign team wasn't able to reproduce the problem at that time. We will make sure that they are very aware that the problem, if not easily reproducible in our labs, is very real and needs fixing ASAP.

  • Failed to open PDF file when placing a PDF in Indesign CS5

I am also having an issue when I am able to place the PDF that the bleed isn't showing up and the crops aren't either

The failure dialog usually means the import options are set to crop to one of the options that isn't defined for that particular file, and changing the crop options to one that isn't grayed out should work. To show bleed and marks, first they must be present in the PDF, and second your choice of crop option must be large enough to include them. Media would be my choice for that.

  • PDF of InDesign CS5.5 has text drift in a table

In InDesign CS5.5 I have a large table (36 rows, 17 columns). The content is prices, right-aligned, two decimal places.
When I export as a PDF, the numbers slowly shift, moving top to bottom, either to the left or right (this happens on many (but not all) different pages), for 20-25 rows, at which point the positioning is corrected. Total deviation from row 1 until the correction varies, from 0.0067 inches to 0.0109 inches.
This happens only when exporting a PDF from InDesign (CS5.5). If I print from the .indd the problem is not there. If I print a .ps and use Distiller, the resulting PDF is fine.
All cells have the same settings as far as padding, tabs, type size.
I'll post this in the InDesign forums as well.

Steve, I don't seem to be able to move this back -- missing some privileges I think. This was a cross-post -- already in the ID forum -- and he was hoping maybe someone in Acrobat had more ideas. Can you move it back again?

Sounds like the .idml was created in CS5 an opened in CS4. Is that correct? You'd lose unsupported CS5 features and that might result in some layout changes, but I wouldn't expect formatting changes, which you implied originally.
There are quite a few reports now of problems converting legacy files to CS5. I've not had any in my own work, but I haven't tried to update a lot of stuff. I wouldn't for example, switch versions near the end of a project, but would finish up in the original version to avoid any potential issues. Exporting from CS4 to either.inx or .idml and opening that in CS5 may give better results than opeing the CS4 .indd directly.
Since you've already done the conversion, and considerable editing, I'm not sure what to tell you. You could try exporting the text to InDesign Tagged Text, then place that into a new file. Copy/Paste in Place any graphic content.

  • Indesign CS5 Crashes When Exporting Layer to Incopy

I had a designer who emailed me last week stating she was having problems with Indesign CS5 crashing when she exported her text layer to Incopy. I thought it might just be her machine; however, I've experienced the same problem today five times. Is this a known issue? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm in Indesign CS5 (7.0.3).

  • Hard 100% InDesign CS5 crash - Dead?

I have a large multi-document book that causes a hard InDesign CS5 crash (submitted to Adobe without response many, many times).  Opening any of the book's documents causes the crash, or restarting InDesign after a crash - which crashes trying to recover.
I've done the following - many times in various orders:
o  Reset InDesign preferences (on restart with 4 keys or manually deleting hidden files per this forum).
o  Cleared all the font caches.
o  Run the Photoshop FontTest javascript (which identifies Lucida Grande as a problem).
o  Re-installed InDesign CS5 and updates completely (although without a complete preceding de-install).
    o  Re-installed Mac OS X 10.6 and updates completely.
o  On another machine, created individual markup documents of every document in the book (.idml files), then moved and tried to open them on the offending machine.
o  Removed all the "recovery" files - in the book's home folder as well as ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 7.0/en_US/
    o  Screamed.
In all cases, upon opening a document in the book (individually or via the book's list of documents) InDesign crashes.  I'm just about ready to get my money back for CS5.  Anybody have some magic?  I need it.

I have no idea why this should be so, but I found a way to retrieve corrupted documents in the book:
The book contained 12 documents - 6 of which were corrupted by InDesign and could not be read by ID CS5, ID CS4 nor could they be exported to .idml files because they couldn't be opened long enough to do so.  History (although I can no longer prove this) indicates that InDesign could corrupt a document during a crash (in book mode, with a good document open, try to open a corrupted document) and subsequent recovery attempt.  When I indicated that even CS5 on another machine would repeat the corruption process, this is how it happened on both of my machines.
So... I tried everything - going back to old backups (thanks to Time Machine), most of which were corrupted or earlier documents that were missing most of what I needed.  I was prepared to re-do hundreds of hours of work.  I re-installed Mac OS X 10.6 again.  I re-installed InDesign CS5 again... and I thought... before updating it (from the 7.0.0.355 disk distribution), let's try to open the corrupted versions of the documents.  It opened 5 of the 6.  Amazed, I quickly made uncorrupted copies of these documents, made markup files and replaced them in the original book.  The last document crashed, but it didn't spread to other open documents.  So (still without updating InDesign) I created a brand new book file and started adding the documents to it - leaving the one remaining document as the last addition.  When I added it, ID indicated it was damaged but added and opened it anyway.  I made an uncorrupted version of that document and replaced it in the replacement book.  I ran the PhotoShop font test again and it still reported that Lucida Grande (regular) was SNAFU, but Font Book reported it as OK - seeming to indicate that the font issue raised in this forum was not related.  I could find no visible abnormalities in any of the recovered documents.  (I was also the victim of the "Anchored Object outside the margin" crash problem early in CS5 that required an update to recover from.)
I'm going to update my copy of InDesign CS5 one of these days, but not until making extra backup copies of every ID document I've produced in the last year.  I'm a software guy and my instincts tell me that something (wild guess - the Adobe Cool Type feature of the Paragraph Composer/Optical Kerning plugin) is broken - perhaps worsened during a software update.  Adobe software is known to be "fragile" - I just had no idea how expensive such fragility could be.
I'm marking this thread "answered" although I still don't know the reason for the problem.  Thank you for your help and encouragement.

  • Placing a PDF in InDesign CS5

    Hello,
I am new to these forums and new to forums as a whole. I have a question about InDesign CS5. I recently upgraded from CS3 to CS5. In InDesign CS3 when I placed a PDF file (or other Adobe file for that matter) once I selected a crop option if I then placed another PDF (or other Adobe file) the Place command remembered my last crop selection and made that the first option. I find that when I place PDFs now in CS5 that I have to select my crop option every time. The default seems to be Bounding Box (visible layers only), and no matter how many times I select another crop option, say media, and then place the item, I always have to reselect the crop option to media when I again place another PDF. Is there and option for changing this default? Or is there a way of turning on a option that will cause InDesign CS5 to remember my last crop selection under the Place command? If so, how do I do it? It would save my lots of time if I could figure this out.
    Thank you.

Welcome to the forum Charles, I hope your first experience is a positive one.
I've had exactly this problem, which was solved in a forum on Indesign Secrets, another great Indesign resource.  The thread is here, but let me know if you have any problems implementing the scripts in it.  I've adapted them and made my own list so for example I can easily just click on one to place page 7 of a PDF to it's trim box, which not only means you don't have to have "show options" ticked when placing but if you drag and drop (which is often a lot quicker) you get what you want to.
Thank you Stix, for the welcome and the information as well.
I believe I have a working understanding of how to edit and place scripts in InDesign. (Now that is scary!) Now I have a new challenge; related to my original challenge. The PDFs that I am placing are not just single page PDFs; some of them can be 50 - 100 pages. That being said, one of my favorite things to do is to take a existing InDesign file, where I have already placed and sized the PDFs, rename it and then go in and select the previously placed PDF and replace it with page xxx; all throughout the document. Perhaps I am doing something wrong with the script information because I do not see away for me to choose the page I want without using the "show import options*. Using this option of course kicks out the script I have selected; does it not? Is there a option in one of example scripts that would help me with this?

  • Exporting PDF problem indesign CS5

    Hello,
I'm trying to export a 72 pages document to pdf in indesign CS5 but during the exporting proces the pdf file disappeares. Who knows a solution to this problem. Thanks in advance for helping me.
    with creative greets,
    Robert Bastiaenen

what I did was saving the indd file. After that I wanted to export the HR-pdf document so I started the export and after 15 minutes teh file disappeares when it wasn't finished with saving. When i tried to save it as the smallest file size possible there was no problem and the file was exported correctly. So I allready found out that the problem can be found in de export to HD_PDF.

  • Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?

Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?
So if I have an Indesign document 84x55 with a 3mm bleed but I want a PDF from that document to crop at 85x55 (adding .5mm to the left and right of the PDF), the crop marks are offset by 3mm but I want the left and right crop to be .5mm out into the bleed and not at the document edge.
Resizing the Indesign file is ruled out for the moment.
    Thanks, Tim

The automatic crop marks will always indicate the trim size of the document as defined in Document Setup, so the simple answer is no. You will need to draw custom crop marks in the slug area. You can set the slug area my clicking More Options in Document Setup.
This is a highly unusual request. The purpose of crop marks is to indicate the one and only trim area for the page. Why do you want crop marks that don’t match the document size?

  • InDesign CS5 crashes during Packaging

OK. I searched and some people experienced this issue (InDesign CS5 crashes during packaging). Some said it was because of corrupted fonts.
So I tried replacing Adobe OpenType fonts which I know won't have any issue (Optima). But, it still crashes. I'm really out of ideas.
It crashes everything when the status dialogue bar says "Saving Document..." and then it just freezes there for ages. Then InDesign CS5 became "Not Responding".
Someone please help. At the moment I've been manually packaging. Frustrating!
I'm on Snow Leopard, 2011 i7 MacBook Pro, 4GB RAM and CS5 Design Premium.
    Thanks.

This definitely does point to a font problem. Most likely a corrupt font, but possibly a corrupt SING issue (oh boy...).
    What is SING issue?

  • InDesign CS5 crashes on menu events

If I install a menu event with applescript, indesign CS5 crashes if the last event handler contains commands from the UI Suite (make dialog...). The dialog appears, but after selecting something indesign crashes. I tried everthing that I know. Event handlers without dialogs and with standard apple script dialogs (display dialog) are running fine. Does anybody made similar experience?

Excellent information - but it didn't seem to help.
I renamed the two files, opened the application again and saw the same behavior. The system did add new InDesign Defualts and InDesign SavedData files - that were much smaller than the renamed ones.
Just  note, this is a new computer - I did not have InDesign CS4 loaded on this laptop.
Also, we have two licenses. The person using the second license has exactly the same problem.
    Any other ideas?? Thanks again.
