When my IMac awakes from sleep mode, the password login screen freezes and no cursor appears.

Hello!  When my IMac awakens from sleep mode, my log in screen is frozen (I can't type anything) and there is no cursor.
I can turn the computer off and on again and then I have an active log in screen, but if I walk away from the computer and it goes into sleep mode and i have the same problem trying to bring it back from sleep mode.
Thoughts?

Hey Kristogirl,
I understand that when waking from sleep mode, your iMac freezes. Try executing these two troubleshooting steps:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
If neither of those help the issue, I would follow the steps in the next article, specifically the "If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X" section:
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199

Hi, the last few days when I'm trying to awake my computer from sleep mode I can't do it from the keyboard (as set by me). When I push the power button the computer awakes from an unexpected shutdown.
Looking in the Event Viewer I see it logs the critical Kernel-Power event when the computer awakes from the shutdown.

We do need the actual DMP file as they contain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask
If you are using Blue screen view, who crashed, or a similar application, don't.  They are wrong at least as often as they are correct

  • AIR event when computer awakes from sleep mode?

    Hi,
I have an AIR app that displays a new set of photos every 12 hours. Some users are complaining that the photos are not refreshed after 12 hours if the computer had been in sleep mode over night.
At first I thought possibly the Timer was stopping when in sleep mode so I instead modified the Timer to execute every minute and just check to see if the last refresh was at least then 12 hours ago. This still did not solve the issue.
Is there an event dispatched I can listen for to detch when the computer awakes from sleep mode? Or if any one has any other suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

This happens onlyon my Powerbook G4 15" 1.33GHZ, and not on my iBook 700MHz. When the PB awakes from sleep mode, any open browser quits. Following is, as an example, the debug output in Terminal of Firefox quitting (I have already sent those reports both to Apple and to the authors of the browser).

My password works fine when I turn the computer on, but when I try to wake it from sleep mode the computer doesn't recognize my password -- the same one I used successfully when I turned the computer on.

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier.  I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French.  When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode.  I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case.  I'll post again if I experience more problems.

  • Monitor wont awake from sleep mode

I have a Pavillion H8-1130A and HP x23LED purchased March 2012.  The screen won't awake from sleep mode.  I can use the mouse successfully with my laptop.  I have tried unplugging power, switching around the DVI cables (I don't have a VGA cable to try).  Any suggestions?

I recently purchased an HP Envy 15T Laptop.   I am also having the same problem.   When set in sleep mode for more than 3 minutes or so, computer will not wake up.   Power button turns to solid, keyboard lights up, but only black screen.  The only thing I can do is remove power cord & battery and then replace.   I can then start computer.     I contacted Costco Consierge.   They took me through a sytem restore to an earlier date I had on file but problem did not correct.   I am next trying to contact HP support for assistance.

  • Photosmart 6525 Autoconnection after Windows 8 machine awakes from sleep mode

I received a Photosmart 6525 printer a month ago and love it.  I initially had it connected to an HP Touchsmart computer and had no issues with it. I moved the printer to a new HP Omni 27 running Windows 8 this week (as well as upgrading my router to an Asus RT-N66R).  The printer is not currently attached to the Omni 27 via USB as the wireless set up tested fine and I printed various documents without issue. The computer and printer are on a power strip and arranged such that when the computer goes to sleep or is shut down, it powers down other items, one of which is the printer. When the printer was used with the Touchsmart computer (also connected wirelessly), it automatically reconnected itself to the wireless network when the Touchsmart came out of sleep mode.  I'm finding with the Omni 27, however, that when it comes out of sleep mode the printer's wireless connection light flashes and I have to manually enter the passphrase on the printer in order for it to reconnect to the network.  It does connect once I enter the passphrase.  I've tried reinstalling the printer a couple of times but it doesn't seemed to have corrected the issue.  I guess one alternative may be to move the power cord to a dedicated outlet that never powers down.  I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this issue but would appreciate any thoughts.

I always recommend a direct connection to a wall outlet.  That should resolve the issue.  You can also turn off "Auto Off" from the front panel-->setup-->preferences.

How can I wake my iMac up from sleep mode? Can I do it via iPad?
I've set the "Wake on Demand" in the system preference, but don't know the way to wake it up.

It wakes up automatically in response to requests for certain sharing services.
    About Wake on Demand
Search for an OS X application called "WakeOnLAN." Search the iTunes App Store for iOS apps with "wake on LAN" in the description.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My imac has a gray screen when waking it up from sleep mode. about 9 months ago, I installed OS X Maverick.

This is the second time this has happened, since installing OS X (9 mos. ago). (I can't recall the fix from the last incident.) Upon waking the pc up from sleep mode, I get a gray screen. Nothing works except using the Command and P & R keys to get to "reinstalling OS X", to no avail. What do I need to do to get it back to normal?
My imac is a 21.5", mid 2011 item.

Those keys do not reinstall OS X. To do that:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
COMMAND-OPTION-P-R keys resets the PRAM. OS X keyboard shortcuts.

  • WIFI slow to reconnect when phone awakes from sleep mode

Today, I updated my LG G3 to Android Lollipop. I have WIFI set to turn off when in sleep mode (unless device plugged in). Now when the phone comes out of sleep mode, it takes up to a minute before the WIFI connection is reestablished. With the previous version of the OS, WIFI reconnected immediately after awakening from sleep mode.
Has this problem been reported to Google? I have not found a way to report bugs directly to Google as a user.
    Thanks,
    Tim

Joel, thanks for your reply. I've followed your instructions, and the problem persists. I assume by reset, you mean reset to factory settings. No. It has been rebooted, and powered off/on several times since the OS update. I have no idea whether there are any apps that use WIFI only. How would I know what each app may require?
Since this happened immediately after the OS update, the logical conclusion is that the update caused this behavior. In my 45 years as a software engineer, I can say this is the most likely cause.
Now, here are two more observations. When I first power the LG G3 up, the WIFI connection is made immediately; before I even unlock the device. So, we know the OS is quick to establish connections upon power up. It is only when coming out of sleep mode that the WIFI connection is slow to be reestablished, taking about a minute as opposed to immediately with the prior OS version.
The second observation is that with my wife's Samsung Note 4, which was updated to lollipop several weeks ago, I do not see this delayed WIFI connection after being awakened from sleep mode. With the Note 4, the connection is reestablished immediately with lollipop as with the prior OS version.
Considering the difference in behavior between the Note 4 and the G3, I would conclude that LG made a firmware change for lollipop which is causing the delay, or LG didn't make a necessary firmware change for lollipop which is causing the delay. At this point, I would say this is an LG G3 problem. It should be easily reproduced. Under the advanced WIFI settings, the setting "Keep WI-FI on when screen is off" should be set to either "Only when plugged in" or "No".
    Thanks again for your help.
