When my screen goes to sleep and then the hard drive goes to sleep why won't the screen wake up?

I can repeat this 100% of the time.  If I let the screen go to sleep (or I manually put it to sleep) and I shut the computer so the hard drive goes to sleep (or if the hard drive simply goes to sleep on the timer), when I open the Macbook Pro the screen will not wake up, although I think the hard drive does as the back light on the keyboard turns on.  Any ideas on why this is happening.  My computer is 4 weeks old...a bit frustrating.  The best answer I have gotten is get a new one for Apple...or completely re-install the OS.
Jared

The reason why it's happening is not obvious and can't be determined without more information. The fact that you can reproduce the problem makes it a lot more tractable.
As a first step, boot in safe mode (shift key down at startup.) Can you reproduce the problem now? If so, note the time, then reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and look in the system log for error messages at the time the screen failed to wake up.

  • I have a mid 2011 macbook and i want to upgrade my RAM my laptop is currently crashed so i have to open it up to change the hard drive so i figured why not add the RAM. I need to know what type of RAM and if i can put in 2 matching 4gb RAM cards into it

Any help is accepted and i need to know asap!!!

  • My screens just turns off and (what I think is the hard drive) goes crazy!

I recently added an extra 512 ram memory to my intel mac. Ever since the computer randomly shuts of the screen and starts making the sound resembling the sound of an error in a cd or a problem in the disk drive although there is no cd or dvd in the unit. This also may be the hard drive. I have had to disconect the computers power plug to fix the problem.
I am worried if this sound may cause irreversible damage. No idea what is causing it.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • How to prevent the hard drive to go sleeping ?

My 20" core 2 duo imac is now running 10.4.8, on the standard 250Gb hd (from seagate : model ST3250824AS).
I remarked that after a few minutes of idling, it goes to sleep (I can easily hear it spinning down... and up when I need it or by itself a few moments later, with the spinning ball for a few seconds...)
I find this behaviour a bit stupid on a desktop computer and I would like to prevent it... I found something on the energy panel (preferences) and I unchecked the case allowing the harddrive to go to sleep as soon as possible.
    No change.
I played with the SpindownHD applet (provided with the CHUD from developer tools) and the display is weird : it displays that Disks sleep after 180 minutes idle (which is perfect...) except that when the harddrive is idling, the display is changed to <<Disks sleep after 1 minutes idle>> and indeed the harddrive goes sleeping... The display then goes back to <<after 180 minutes idle>>...
Not a big problem, but weird, and, IMHO, plain stupid behaviour for a desktop harddrive, all the more so than I guess it will make the harddrive wear out more quickly...
Did I miss something obvious ?

This presumes that the hard drive itself doesn't have
    a built-in sleep control that's independent and
unchangeable. However, even drives that do usually
have a sleep time of at least 15 minutes. That
doesn't sound like the case for your drive from what
    you've posted.
It might well be that, in the sense that I'm not that sure that the delay after which the drive goes to sleep is less than 15 minutes. (Not everything done on the computer involves disk access, so when the hard drive went to sleep, it might have been idling for longer than what I thought.)
That being said, on seagate web site, the documentation about this model states that power management should be accessible through the operating system setup, so it looks like nothing is unchangeable...
Maybe power management in tiger does not comply completely with this drive specific controls... yet... Quoting the documentation : <<the standby timer delay is established using a Standby or Idle command.>>
but it appears that when the drive enters Idle status, for the internal seagate hard drive as well as the external firewall (when plugged in) the delay that is applied is 1 minute...

i am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty.  Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits.  Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

  • I purchased Apple TV. I had to upgrade my OS to Lion which I did. I cannot get Lion to open because time machine is backing up to two hard drives, my external hard drive and my internal hard drive.  How do I just get the backups going to the external? thx

I have a desktop Mac.  I bought Apple tv and wanted to connect my photos to the tv.  I learned that I had to upgrade my OS as I didn't have icloud capability.  I purchased and downloaded Lion.  I cannot open it however, because when I go to select the hard drive to install Lion onto, the dialogue box says that I cannot open it in either my external hard drive or the internal hard drive because of the backups to time machine.  I have tried the 'fix' of moving the backup folder to the trash and then putting it on the desktop, but I still can't access either one of the drives to install Lion.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The current OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, so I if the purchase was recent, that is what you should have.
It should be possible to see what disk space is being used by opening the Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utilities folder.   It looks like both disks are set as TM disks:
If you have Time Machine backup of both the internal and external disks and want to rationalise the system to only backup one, then set the TM preferences>options to exclude volumes as required:
When you download the installer from the Apple Store (MAS) it will come up with a dialogue to run it.  It will then ask which disk you wish to install the system on.  Is this where you have got to, before it says they are both unavailable?

  • When do the hard drives go to sleep?

I have the default power saver settings on my Mac Mini with Yosemite. One of the options is “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” which I currently have checked. The trouble I have been trying to get through a ClamXav virus scan on my machine since yesterday and it seems that overnight (and possibly when I went out for a few hours) it stopped working, only to start up again when I woke my machine.
How many hours of inactivity does it take before the OS decides that the hard drives need to go to sleep?
And what sorts of activities does it recognize as ones that justify leaving the hard drives awake?

Usually drives will go to sleep after about 5 minutes of inactivity. And they should wake up automatically when they're accessed. A drive sleeping should not interrupt a scan; drive sleep/wake should be invisible to any applications (other than it being slow).
Honestly, though, I'd recommend unchecking that setting. It slows things down a lot when drives need to be accessed as spin-up time adds 5-10 seconds every time it wakes. Also, it's actually HARDER on the drives to continually power up and down than to just keep spinning at a constant angular velocity.

  • I used a Disk Warrior to rebuild my G4. When loading the program it wouldn't SU with the repair disc so I selected the Disc Warrior as my SU disk and repaired my hard drive but now I can't get the G4 to SU with anything but the repair disc. What do I do?

I used a Disc Warrior repair disc to rebuild by G4 Power Mac hard drive. It wouldn't
startup using the disc and the C key so I selected the Warrior as my startup disc, started up, repaired the disc and now I can't get the computer to startup on it's hard drive. It will only startup on the repair disc.  What do I do to get back to normal?

It's related to your hard drive failure.
White screen means the EFI partition isn't loading and it's the first partition on the drive to load up, EFI contains the gray boot screen.

  • How can I transfer my old iTunes (playlists and all) from the hard drive of my old dead computer to the iTunes of my new one?

So my old PC died before I managed to back up my iTunes library onto DVDs. I do however have the hard drive from the old PC with all the program files, files and folders on. I also have the iPhone 4, which has my top rated playlist on but that only holds about 20% of my entire music collection on.
Is it possible to somehow find all my old iTunes music, videos, playlists, podcasts etc and transfer it into the iTunes on the new PC without losing anything?

  • Palm Zire 31 sat idle for too long and then my hard drive crashed - I have recovered my palmOne files from the hard drive but don't know how to install to desktop?

Since this product is no longer supported by the manufacturer, I hope that someone out there will be able to help me find a way to get my calendar and contacts restored to the desktop.  My handheld sat unused for a very long time, but my desktop calendar and contacts were current up until my hard drive crashed.  I was able to recover the PalmOne files from the crashed hard drive but all I can see are *.dat files.  When I try to import or restore, the *.dat is not a supported file extension.  HELP!  I have the original installation CD. Thank you

.dat are the actual working files Palm Desktop is looking for - you can't import them.
Just create a user in Palm Desktop and copy the .dat files (that have more than 1k of data) over the existing address.dat and datebook.dat (or calendar.dat, I forget which existed on your device).
