When opened, iPhoto freezes trying to import old photos from library

When I open iphoto, I get a message that says "26 photos have been found in the iphoto library that were not imported. Would you like to import them now?" When I click YES, my computer freezes and I must force quit. The only way I can open iphoto is to ignore this message. This occurs when no devices are hooked up to my computer. How can I fix this or delete these 'mystery' photos that are waiting to be imported? Help! (Please and Thanks)

quit iPhoto and in the finder right click on the iPhoto Library package, select the Show Package contents option and fine the folder names Import or Importing and drag it to your desktop - DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE within the iPhoto Library
close and restart iPhoto - you should be ok. Look inside the import folder from the finder and see if there is anything you want to save - if not trash the folder and its contents - if there are photos you want to save drag them one at a time onto the iPhoto icon or the open program - if you find one that cause,s problems trash it

  • I'm trying to import "old" photos from my iPad to my MacBook.

I'm trying to import all of the photos from my iPad to my laptop. Although I can clearly see TONS of photos on my iPad, when I plug it into my laptop all that are showing as available for import are two that I already imported and 86 "new" ones.
How can I import other "old" ones?
Not sure how much difference this makes, but my iPad is an older one (first iPad) as is my MacBook, although my MacBook has all of the updates available for it.
    Thanks,

  • I tried to import 2 photos from an email. The photos are now on iPhoto, however, when I try to close iPhoto or turn off my computer, I get a notice that says, "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for the import to complete."

I tried to import 2 photos from an email to iphoto. The photos now appear in iphoto as the latest imports, However, when I try to close iphoto or log off of my computer, I get a message box that says, " Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for the import to complete."
I can't get out of iphoto or log off of my computer, or turn the computer off. How do I stop the import or log out of iphoto???

Try Force-quit from the Apple-menu to close iPhoto.

  • I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11   into Aperture v3.0

I am trying to import my photos from iphoto 11 v9.4.3  into Aperture v3.0. When I select import I get a message saying Aperture cannot import libraries from version earlier that iphoto 7.1.5 and tells me to upgrade to a lter version of iphoto. Advice ?

I am on MAC OS X Version 10.8.5
Is Aperture 3.0 still correct or have you upgraded to Aperture 3.4.5? Only Aperture 3.4.5 can import iPhoto 9.4.3 libraries.
As I said above, you can download the updater for Aperture here:
    Use this link:  Aperture 3.4.5

  • Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How do I import RAW photos into iPhoto?  I cannot import RAW photos from my Olympus EPL-2 camera.  I am using iPhoto 7.1.5.

I cannot import RAW photos from my Olympus EPL-2 camera.  I am using iPhoto 7.1.5.  I read that iPhoto has to update their system and add each camera to be able to import RAW photos from it.  If this is true, how can I let Apple know to add my camera.  Thanks in advance.

The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually. If yours is not supported then let them know you want it:
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
When support is added I also expect that you'll need iPhoto 09 or 11.

  • Unreadable photos when trying to import old photos to new updated iPhoto??

After updating to Yosemite and updating iPhoto to 9.6, when trying to import all my old photos, it says they are all unreadable.  How do I update the file format of the photos to import them?

You found the right way to do it.  Never import an iPhoto Library into iPhoto. Just open the iPhoto Library by double-clicking it. You are lucky, that iPhoto prevented you from importing the iPhoto Library. It would have created a terrible mess of duplicate photos in all sizes.

  • IPhoto 9.6 wont import old photo library

I had to upgrade I photo last night and my iMac crashed when doing the upgrade/import of old photos. I have found the folder containing all of my masters but I can't seem to import them now. Drag and drop, or import library won't work. help please

    Try this:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • "Open iPhoto 5 or higher to see photos from iPhoto Library in this list" ??

This is a huge problem because I was in the middle of making a slideshow and then all of a sudden when I tried to choose a photo to put in the slideshow, it said "Open iPhoto 5 or higher to see your photos from your iPhoto Library in this list."
The problem is, is that I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6 and that's definitely higher than iPhoto 5, if I'm not mistaken. I'm trying to upload a video on my facebook profile and it says the same thing. What do I do?
This is what it looks like:

Two common causes of this issue:
Is there a photo cd in your disk drive. If so, eject it and try again.
Otherwise this can be a symptom of a damaged database:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • File could not be written....is the problem when trying to import any photo from my hard drive.. I have just downloaded lightroom 5 and it does not seem to want to link with my photos .. win 7

    question

Could you quote the entire error message, word-for-word, verbatim? What Import settings are you using ... Copy, Move, Add?
Most likely you have a permissions issue, but it will be much more clear to me if I can see the entire message.

  • Get error msg when opening iphoto from Photoshop: "Open iphoto 5 or later..

I get an error msg when trying to open a photo in iPhoto from Photoshop: "Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list." ... but in info it says I have iPhoto '08.... I am confused.... what is iPhoto 5, and how is it different than iPhoto '08? I have not had this issue before today.... previously it was working fine.
Please email me when answered as it took me a while to find this forum and I'm afraid I won't be able to find it again.
    Thanks,

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • App Memory Leak When Open iPhoto

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone have experienced app memory leak when open iPhoto?  My free memory immediate dropped from 5000 mb to 15mb when I open iPhoto and the app never open.  If I force to quit iPhoto, all return to normal and everything work fine.  I only have iPhoto app running, not sure what caused the memory leak???
    Looking for help.
    Thanks
    JHML

Actually the new library was a test to see if the problem occurred only with your current library or with all libraries.  The fact that switching libraries cleared up the problem is just serendipitous.

  • When importing my photos from iPhone i see all my photos as duplicates before importing

while trying to import my photos from my iPhone6 to macbook pro using iPhoto i see my pictures as duplicates before importing this the first time i get this problem

    gail from maine wrote:
    Hey Larry,
I have noticed this when I import my photos as well. But I was thinking that for me, maybe it is because I also import my Photo Stream automatically, so when I'm importing my camera roll, they might have already been imported automatically from the Photo Stream?
Is that why I would be getting the duplicates when I import?
    Thanks,
    GB
Different problem - OP sees duplicates in the import window - you are importing twice (once automatically form PhotoStream and a second time by connecting the camera) - importing a photo twice will always give you two copies - do one or the other - not both
