When opening a jpg in illustrator it automatically rotates 90 degrees

I'm only new to illustrator so please excuse my ignorance. I'm trying to open a jpg and edit it but when I initally open it the picture is on a 90 degree angle. How do I fix this.   Thanks

AI is not primarily meant for editing pixel images. You use Photoshop for that. That aside the file probably has the orientation set via a metadata tag - it's actually stored as landscape, but has info to display it as portrait. AI does not use this info, so you will have to rotate it manualyl using Object --> Transform.

  • How can I choose a font besides Myriad Pro as default when opening existing PDFs in Illustrator?

I already know how to do this for new documents.
But I work with PDFs generated in AutoCAD.
When opening these files in Illustrator, the default font is always set to Myriad Pro.
How can I substitute my desired font for Myriad when opening EXISTING files, short of copy/pasting into a new file? That workaround is just as time-consuming as resetting the font every time I work on a new document.
Illustrator has to be referencing something when defaulting to this font. It seems unbelievable that this setting cannot be altered.
    Any ideas out there?

We get autocad dies from a variety of sources, quite often the font is .txt which susbtitutes to myriad. I use find font  to substitue myriad to arial.
Since no doucment is open, changing the New document profiles does not help to get rid of Myriad.
You can record an action for this and set a hot key. The action is pretty fast

  • Black screen when opening a jpg file

    Dear all,
When opening a jpg file with Quicktime Pro, I get a black screen of the dimensions of the picture instead of the picture itself.
Any idea how to fix this ?
    Thanks !

Issue resolved by reinstalling Mac OS (or refreshing using the DVD)

  • Problem with fonts when opening a pdf in Illustrator

Hi all! I'm working on a pdf. I do NOT have the original. So I've found it's easier to open the pages in Illustrator, make edits, and resave as a pdf. The problem is that Illustrator is converting some text to outlines. It is saying I don't have the font, but I do. In fact, on the same page I'll have 4 lines... and some will be converted to outlines and some won't... and they are all the same font. Is there a way to tell Illustrator to NOT convert the font to outlines? I don't mind if it uses a substitute font... it's easy to go in and change the font to the right font. But I don't want the text converted to outlines. Thanks.
    Julie
PS I'm using CS 4 on a Mac.

Thanks, Scott. But I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty standard." Are you saying this is, in fact, default behavior in AI 14?
I'm still at AI 12 (CS2), and "standard" behavior (when the font is not available) is for Illustrator to do a font substitution, not automatically convert the type to outlines.
Is this, perhaps, what the new 'Missing Glyph Protection' does in AI 14 (as Myle suggested in post #1)?
If, in fact, this is the new default behavior, I would hope that Illustrator provides a warning (and an option to not proceed) given the highly destructive nature of converting type to outlines.

  • When I drag an image into IBA, it rotates 90 degrees.

I'm having trouble dragging a particular image into iBooks Author.  I took a picture and imported from my camera to iPhoto.  The image had to be rotated 90 degrees, which I did in iPhoto.  I'm using the "Contemporary" template in iBooks Author and I'm trying to drag my image from iPhoto to replace the red, space themed image at the top of a section page.  When I do so, the image reverts to its original instead of the rotated form.  I can't figure out how to rotate the image without rotating the mask.

    Hello Abram1,
Not sure of the reasons but I would imaging it might have to do with iPhoto and its non destruction approach to editing.
Have you tried exporting the image out as a new image that would then have the new rotation that you wish applied to it.
    I hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Nigel

  • Text moving when opening a pdf in illustrator

I opened 2 separate hi res pdfs (the front and back of a postcard) in illustrator 5.1. The type on both sides had been outlined and we just relinked the background image on both sides after we did some color adjustments to it. The only type on the front was the name of the company and the headline. Both were white type in separate magenta bars. The type was centered both horizontally and vertically in each bar.
When I opened the front, the headline text moved from being centered horizontally on the pdf to EXACTLY flush right with the company name. There were no problems with the text moving on the back side.
We have been receving files from this client for several years and always make color adjustments due to the uncoated paper stock we print on and have never encountered this before. The original files that the supplied pdfs were made from were also created in illustrator 5.
Is this a known issue? If not, is it acrobat or illustrator problem.

Was the original PDF created in Illustrator? To find out, open the PDF in Acrobat and go to File> Properties, it should show you what program created the PDF. Illustrator is not a universal PDF editor. A safer work flow would be to use Edit Object in Acrobat to make your color corrections. If you decide to use Illustrator, go to Select> All text objects, I suspect there are some un-outlined and un-embedded type elements.
If the fonts are properly embedded, there is almost no reason to outline the type.

  • "File Not Found" When opening a file in illustrator CS3

I having issues where when I click on a file it launches illustrator but then I get prompted with file not found. I then open illustrator and browse to the file and am to open it....any ideas? This one has me stumped.

I think I found the problem. I am using Illustrator CS5 (15.0.02) running on MacOS (10.7.5).
In my script, Folder.selectDialog function was returning "file:///Users/alex/Apps/temp", when I selected the temp folder from the dialog box. I want the function to return "/Users/alex/Apps/temp". If I hardcode the path (as shown below), the javascript runs fine.
    // Select the source folder.
    //sourceFolder = Folder.selectDialog( 'Select the folder with Illustrator files', '~' );
    sourceFolder = Folder("/Users/alex/Apps/temp");

  • When opening interactive pdf in illustrator, form text disappears... how do i save the interactive pdf to be able to use in illustrator without text disappearing?

    Any ideas?

    Photoshop - no chance.
InDesign - will usually just work.
Text editing in Acrobat is, however, a desperate last resort. Really, never, never consider it for files where the original is still available, even at some effort. Text editing is for where the original is lost and all the backups eaten by termites.

  • I take a picture and send it in an e-mail.  When I open the icture in OUtlook it is rotated 90 degrees.  Why?

When i take picture with my iPgone and send it in an e-mail, the picture isrotated 90 degrees when I open it in Outlook.  If i hold the camera sidewise, the same thing happens.  What causes this?

Because Windows and Outlook are ignoring the orientation information stored in the metadata for the photo.

  • How I prevent the batting linestyle from being lost when opening an Autocad file in Illustrator?

I have worked out how to open Autocad files in Illustrator, but Illustrator does not obviously recognise the batting linestyle I have used for insulation and it only appears as a straight line. Is there any where to preserve the batting line when opening the file in Illustrator?

If a linestyle is not coming over, I would assign a unique color in CAD. This way you can select similar color in Illustrator, and change them easily in Illustrator.

  • Why does Illustrator CC crash when opening files from Windows 7 64x file manager?

This does not happen with any of my ogher CC applications; and the files open just fine when opening from directly within Illustrator. It doesn't matter if it is an AI, EPS, or PDF file. The program just crashes. What I thought was a glitch a few months ago, seems to keep happening, and despite at least one (1) update, it still isn't fixed.
Am I the only one having this problem? Thankfully, Illustrator is about the least used of my programs so I'm not ready to pull out my hair just yet.

    UPDATE:
I have since updated all of my CC applications to 2014, and this issue has ceased. I am marking this issue as answered, but it is not truly resolved.

  • Illustrator crashes when opening some PDFs

When opening some PDFs in Illustrator, Illustrator "Quits Unexpectedly"
It only occurs on one out of 15 of our Macs
I am running on all the latest updates both OS and Adobe
    It is very intermittent
It only seems to do it across a SMB network share
If the file is copied to the desktop it works fine
If the file is outlined and accessed from the network share it works fine
If the file is moved to another folder on the same network share it seems to work fine
I have repaired all fonts and cleared all font caches
This has recently had a full clean (using adobe's clean script) and re-install of Illustrator because of updating issues, but we have other Macs which have had to go through this also.
I have a crash log also but it is too big to post here
Any ideas before I wipe the lot and start again?

    It is not nonsense.
A pdf is supposed to be an end-format, not to be edited. Edits should always be done in the originating application, not in Illustrator. A native AI-file is not the same thing as a pdf. Editing pdfs in Illustrator can be a recipe for disaster and damage of the file-content.
The following is from Dov Isaacs at Adobe in teh Indesign mailinglist at Lassosoft:
"Adobe Illustrator is NOT, repeat NOT, repeat yet again NOT a general
purpose PDF (or EPS) editor. It cannot fully and properly edit PDF
(or EPS) files created any than by "save as" operations from the
equivalent or later version of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator only
"knows" about PDF constructs that it itself generates. Other PDF
constructs may be modified or deleted without notice. Furthermore,
Illustrator does NOT support mixed color-space PDF files. And finally,
Illustrator does NOT make use of any fonts embedded in a PDF file. If
you "edit" a page of a PDF file in Illustrator, you must have the
same version of the same font on the Illustrator system as you have
on the system that creates the PDF.
We constant hear of problems in prepress due to misuse of Adobe
Illustrator as a PDF fixup program. You use Illustrator at your own
risk for this purpose which is absolutely not supported by
    Adobe Systems Incorporated!

  • Strange JPG bug. Lost image details when open it in PS. It looks sharper.

    Hello.
    Strange problem found.
This problem recur in Windows/Mac environment and in the CS4, CS3, CS2 and even 5.5 :-) (maybe others) versions of PS.
When open some JPG images in Photoshop, some details lost and image looks sharper/grainy then it is.
I've tested jpg's created by 3d editing program, downloaded from web etc on different PC's and still same problem, only in PS.
    Any ideas?
I think, it's not driver problem, because of problem iterations on different machines and in PS only.
CS4 11.0.1 installed, nvidia fx3700 latest drivers installed.
Original image in attachment, to open it ps and see the bug.

I didn't see any of that.
What I did see was that when opened and viewed in Paintshop pro X2 the picture was the same.
When opened and viewed in PS CS4 extended the red color was noticeabley washed out.
I must have something adjusted wrong in PS.

  • How to copy and paste an object (i.e. a drawn polygon) without it automatically rotating in the pasted page?

In detail:  I have a multiple page PDF for a construction project.  We are using Adobe to mark the drawings up; the drawings have a set scale.  In my scenario, I am highlighting a region of known data on the plan using a shaded polygon.  I have another page that I need to compare that shaded region to that is at a different scale.   I reprinted the differently scaled plan through Adobe at 200% size to match to the main document's scale (going from '1 inch = 40 feet' up to '1 inch = 20 feet').  That newly printed page was inserted into the document containing with the polygon.  I then copied and pasted the polygon onto the new page.  The polygon is automatically rotated 270 degrees.
The issue is why the polygon is rotating.  The above information is just in case it matters.  And, yes, sometimes this happens in other files as well, but not always.
Using Adobe Standard X (NOT Pro), version 10.1.9

    Thank you Sukrit for responding.
The computer I am using is controlled by a government agency.  They do not allow users to install or modify any software.  The file I am using, though a public document, may not be advisable to be posted online.
However, my solution to the issue was to reprint the document that I was pasting into and modifying the print settings to rotate the PDF image.  First, I had to change the size of the PDF beyond the original full size dimensions to account for the scale change.  Then change the print settings to print landscape while telling adobe's advanced settings to print portrait.  After some finesse with other settings for scale, I was able to copy and paste the polygon without loosing the scale.  This took me a week to figure out.  An extreme waste of time for such a simple issue that should not occur in such a popular software.
