    When will Data Services 3.x be released for Linux 64-bit?
    We have a quite large installation currently but want to upgrade to DS 3.1 on SUSE Linux and Oracle and would really like to run it on 64-bit.

    Data Services 3.2 targeted for this summer will natively support Linux 64-bit on Red Hat and SUSE.

  • New Skype for Linux released, version 4.3 | Edit: Now in Repo's

    A New Skype has been released for Linux.  Not quite yet in our repo's as of this writing.  Skype 4.3 is now in the official repo's.
    One of the larger changes is that ALSA is no longer supported and users are instead directed to use Pulse Audio.  I already use Pulse, but I can imagine there will be some people unimpressed with this new requirement.
    Unfortunately when it comes to network messaging programs the protocol is what rules.  All my friends use the Skype protocol so I also have to use it to communicate with them.  As far as I'm aware there is no full-featured replacement for the Skype protocol on Linux that also does audio and video.
    What do you think?
    Note: I posted in Multimedia, if there is a better place for this please feel free to move it.  Perhaps networking, but Skype is a multimedia/network application.

    There is one more option to consider, though, one that I find fascinating: WebRTC. WebRTC is native voice and video chat in a web browser. Both Firefox and Chrome have supported it for some time now, so if you and your friend use one of those web browsers then you don't need to install any special software. Just send them a link to a web page and start using it.
    Disclaimer: I tried it about a year ago. Firefox was able to display my webcam video but I never successfully established a connection with my friend. I should try it out again...
    I tried it out a few weeks ago on a couple of computers running Arch, and managed to get it working fine between all combinations of Chromium and Firefox (all up to date, mind). I used Talky and it certainly made WebRTC easy. I just need to convince members of the family to stuff Skype now!
    Thanks so much for the Talky suggestion.
    I tried to convince people to use Jitsi and register for their Jabber service, but unfortunately a lot are content with using Skype.

  • Oracle 9i Database for Linux

    Hello,
    I need to be able to test some software changes against an Oracle 9i database running under Linux as this is an environment used by one of my customers.
    I have tried downloading the zip files found at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oracle9i/htdocs/linuxsoft.html but if I try to open or download any of these files I receive an Error 404 Page Cannot Be Loaded.
    This happens when using IE6 or when using GetRight.
    Are the links to these files still valid? If not, where can I download Oracle 9i Database for Linux?

    I don't find any problems with these files and they are still available.

  • Oracle 8 client for Linux

    I really need to find the Oracle 8 client for Linux. It isn't available anywhere on Oracle's site. Is there an alternate way to get it? I need a modern PHP to be able to connect with an Oracle 7 database. It is not currently an option to upgrade the Oracle database, as much as I would love to do so.

    8.0.4 for linux does not exists nor you need it to connect to a 8 database.
    Just install the 9i client (available at OTN) and recompile your cgi's.

  • Oracle JDBC Driver for Linux

    I'm looking for a place to download an Oracle JDBC driver for Linux. I have installed Oracle 8.1.5 for Linux, but don't find the driver either in the installation, nor on the CD. Can anyone point me to someplace I might be able to find it?
    Also, generic help in setting this up to work, JDBC API calls would also be of great help.
    Thanks.

    : Thanks in advance.
    1) You need classes111.zip usually located at
    $ORACLE_HONE/jdbc/lib.
    2) Add classes111.zip to CLASSPATH and export
    3) If you use thin driver your code should look like:
    Class.forName ("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    // Connect to the database
    // You must put a database name after the @ sign in the
    connection URL.
    // You can use either the fully specified SQL*net syntax or
    a short cut
    // syntax as <host>:<port>:<sid>. The example uses the
    short cut syntax.
    Connection conn =
    DriverManager.getConnection
    (jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:port:ORACLE_SID,
    USER_NAME, PASSWOED);

    Does anyone know if there is an Oracle VPN client for Linux (64-bit) ?
    Where to get it ?

    Perhaps OpenVPN will work for you. Unfortunately you did not provide any OS information and VPN requirements.
    You can find help to install and setup OpenVPN in Google. You might want to check the Fedora EPEL repository http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL to install the software using standard yum in Enterprise Linux.

  • Oracle for Linux - released?!?

    Yeah, I'm aware this might seem a bit foolish to ask, but
    when I call Oracle in Denmark (which seems natural to me, as
    I live there :) I am told that Oracle 8 for Linux isn't released
    yet. So what's the deep truth about this?

    1) Someone had suggested that the recent webcast with Larry Ellison would be about Database 12c, but that didn't make sense because the other presenter in the webcast was the head of SPARC.
    2) Amazon is taking orders for a book called Pro Oracle Database 12c Administration that is supposed to be published on April 17th.
    3) Apress Books has two titles announced for mid-May.
    I would assume that those books cannot be published before the product is released, so those dates might provide some indication.
