When partitioning I get an error message

I have a MacBook Air that I bought in Nov of last year. It is version 3.2. It came with a little USB key for loading the operating system onto the computer.
I bought Windows Home Premium (complete version) and want to put that on my computer, assigning 20 GB to that partition.
My computer has 240GB capacity.
I have an Apple portable DVD drive.
The operating system is 10.6.8.
I opened Boot camp assistant. Then I chose the partition marker to stay at 20GB. I pressed enter for it to start the partition process. After five minutes  an error message came up. I can't remember exactly what it said but it said I can't partition this disk. It said do a backup (I already have made a backup) and go into Utilities and make it a single extended journaled volume.
I don't understand why I got this message.
Is it because I have the DVD drive plugged into the USB port?
Should I disconnect and try again?

So is this what I should do?
1) Back up the entire mac volume onto another disk using Carbon Cloner
2) Do a clean install of the mac operating system. I think the USB key operating system version is 10.6.4 (the USB key that came with the delivery of the new laptop).
3) Then I have a clean Desktop etc. I haven't put the backup on the computer yet. Do Boot camp assistant. Partition. Insert the Windows 7 disk. Set up Windows 7. Then once it's set up, insert the USB key Mac OS into the USB port and add the Boot camp drivers. Then you are done with setting up the Windows 7 software.
4) Use Migration Assistant to restore all the backed up files from the external disk where you put them on using Carbon Cloner and put it in the mac volume.
You're done.
Are these the steps I need to follow? Am I missing anything? During the clean installation of the Mac OS using the USB key, does it give an option to create a Boot camp partition? Or do I need to initiate this myself once the Mac OS is installed, opening Boot Camp assistant?
I should not get the "Some files cannot be moved ..." message if I follow these steps, should I?
No
After
1) Back up the entire mac volume onto another disk using Carbon Cloner
Reboot to the clone, use it to erase your disk (set format to be Mac OSX Journaled), clone the external back to the internal.
Than carry on with the BC installation.

  • How can I download iphone software 5 when I keep getting this error message: There was a problem downloading the s/w for the iphone ...The network connection timed out. It's error 3259

I keep getting an error message saying my network connection has timed out when I try to download the iphone 5 software to my iphone 4 while it's connected to my laptop. Then it says make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active. The download gets all the way to the end (takes about an hour mind you), and keeps timing out.  It's error 3259.  FYI, I have the latest version of iTunes.

Security software on your computer/router is the usual cause of this. Turn off/disable or uninstall all anti-virus software & firewalls. Try again.

  • When trying to import bought CD's (10yr old) to ITunes, it recognizes the album and the tracks, but when importing I get the error message '  Error occurred while converting 'songname' file. The required disk cannot be found

Seems also that the majority of CD's that have these problems are Warner Music published (I have roughly 20 that display the same problem)

    Windows and iTunes 10.
Had this problem "Error importing file .... songname .... iTunes cannot locate the required file" when trying to import a CD today.
My library is on an external USB hard drive.  iTunes from time to time not only loses its own library file, but also confuses windows into thinking that the library files do not exist.
So the fix where you re-tell iTunes where to find its own media file (using the preferences menu hidden behind some opaque icon for reasons that pass rational understanding) fails, and when you try to find the file using windows explorer, windows possibly confused by apple "helper" files, or possibly lost in a delusion of its own, also thinks there are no files in the music directory.  This despite usage stats on the disk still clearly showing that a lot of space is being used up by files that "aren't there".
The fix for this windows user is close everything down.  Reboot, restart iTunes and presto it as if iTunes's / Window's temporary amnesia never happened.
Last time I "lost" the library was when I did the "upgrade" to iTunes 10. I wrongly put this down to a pathetic upgrade utility. I now realise that iTunes/Windows just loses this key element of the plot from time to time, screwing up windows when it does so.
Astonished how flaky this widely used and let's face it hardly brand new software combination is.
Now I don't know if this spectacularly unhelpful performance is Apple's fault or Microsoft's or both, so I'm not going to bother apportioning my contempt.  Shame on both your houses for needless worry that I'd have to re-rate and re-sort everything from a virgin set of file back ups yet again.

    Hi supplies123,
Are you trying to convert from within Reader? If so, please make sure that you have the most current version of Reader by choosing Help > Check for Updates. Install any available updates--the most current version, 11.0.07, alleviates some of these sign-in errors.

  • When I click on the icon to open Firefox I get an error message " A copy of Firefox is already open, only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time".

I have tried to download and run Firefox on my MAC OS 10.6.7 several times and have run into this error message every time:
"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time". A search through the computer does not fine another copy of Firefox and there is no window open or evidence of the program open.
When I got this computer a year ago I copied the hard drive from the old computer onto the new and the old computer had a copy of Firefox on it and the program worked on that computer. It would not run on the new computer so I thought maybe it was due to the Intel chip so I deleted the program and downloaded the newest version at the time. This is when I started getting the error message and subsequent attempts have yielded the same results.
    Can you be of help?

You cannot use the AE to extend wireless from a non apple router such as your cisco modem router.. they are not compatible..
You need to tie to the two devices together either with ethernet or something like EOP adapters.. They are about $120 and you can price match in officeworks.

  • I get an error message when purchasing mountain lion

I currently have Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I just freshly formatted and re-installed Mac OS X and Windows 7 on a partition using bootcamp.  The last time I tried installing 10.8 it failed because it was unable to create a partition it needed (I forget details).  I got a refund for the 19.99 purchase.
Now I'm trying to purchase it again, but the 19.99 price changes to "Download".  I did not purchase it again as far as I'm aware.  When I click "Download" I get an error message "The update is for an app downloaded with a different Apple ID.  Sign in with that Apple ID and try again."
I don't have and never did have another Apple ID.  What's the problem here?

  • Why am I getting this error message when I try to open a photo in Preview?

I am getting the following message when I try to open a photo in Preview. I have searched for possible solutions and nothing works for me. I have always used Preview to edit photos.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

    Hello, what OSX version?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • When trying to install Mountain Lion I get an error message, Failed, recovery can't be created

When trying to install Mountain Lion I get an error message, Failed, recovery can't be created

My Mountain Lion install failed for the following reason:
OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created.
    The message went on:
    Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more.
The page is about a different failure, but I'm assuming the reason for my failure is this one:
The disk has a non-standard Boot Camp partition setup, in which further partitioning was performed after running Boot Camp Assistant, or the configuration that Boot Camp Assistant created was manually modified.
The cure involves erasing the entire HD and starting from scratch, which in my case would involve backing up both the Mac and Windows sides, setting up Boot Camp again, reinstalling Windows XP and recovering everything from backups on both sides. I would rather not have Mountain Lion than go through all that, and I think it's unfair for Apple to expect me to.
Because I don't recall doing anything off-piste when I set up Boot Camp in the first place (for a start, I'm not clever enough), I consider this episode an inadequacy in the Mountain Lion installer. As I won't be using the download, is it possible to get my money back?
