screen goes dark has alot of writing on it w/ message stating need to turn power off and then turn back on, but same thing keeps happening

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Zap the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Startup in Safe Mode > Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Then if it still doesn't start up I would next check, reseat or replace the RAM modules as per > : How to remove or install memory
Or run the Hardware Test > Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

The iPod Touch is using 3.1.3 software and it tells me that is the current and updated software version.

You are correct in that your 1G iPod Touch has all the latest software updates. It can only be updated to version 3.1.
However that Apps you are trying to download and install likely require iOS version 4.0 or later, which is not compatible with your iPod Touch. So either you'll need to buy a newer iPod Touch or find other Apps that are suitable replacements if possible.

Please try each of the following steps you haven't already taken, until the issue is resolved. After each step, relaunch the App Store and try again.

You got it downloaded and I assume you mean it is installed as well. It was buggy for me.
I had to close and restarted iTunes before I could use it properly.
Then, I had to unplug and replug in my phone before it recognises it.
Just had to try everything. As final choice, update over the air. I try to avoid it as it tends to have more problems than a tethered update.

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
