When proxy autoconfig url is unreachable / down Safari Hangs

When we point the client broswer to an auto configuration URL for a proxy.pac file, if that url is unreachable (Server is down, client is off network) Safari just hangs.
So this seems to be unique to Safari. Firefox on MAC, Windows and IE on Windows work correctly. Any ideas or workarounds?
How does one configure an OSX box to play nice in the corporate world?

I'm having exactly the same problem on a 1st Gen iPhone and it started after I upgraded to 2.2. It is so bad that I am giving up trying to browse with Safari on my iPhone. Unless someone gets lucky and finds a solution, I'm going to have to revert to 2.1 - random crashes are better than having page load failures every minute or 2!

    I just updated to 8.1.2 and unfortunately deleted my older version that worked. Now when I open a PDF file, Adobe remains open for a moment and then shuts down the document and Safari. The download seemed to go ok.

    It did a great deal, but perhaps not for this particular

    Can't help with your Safari issue, but if you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, register as an Apple Developer—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. You'll get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Shutting down Safari on iPod Touch

    Why would anyone want to shut down Safari on the iPod Touch? Well, it's like this.
    The WiFi network at the University where I work has a laborious and arcane log-in where it's necessary to shut down the browser after entering the username and password, and then restart it in order to gain access to the network and the Internet. I've managed to configure the proxy settings for this network, and enter the username and password into the incredibly tiny boxes. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to shut the browser down. If I switch to another application and/or power down the iPod Touch, the browser resolutely remains open to the last page viewed.
    Any thoughts?

    Open a new empty page in Safari and close the original one. Then close Safari. Safari will re-open at the empty page.
    (In fact, when you close Safari, you are in fact shutting it down - it doesn't remain running in the background. Safari just remembers the last page you were at and re-opens it when you re-open Safari).

  • IIS Reverse Proxy with URL rewrite.

    Hi all, hoping to leverage the wealth of knowledge contained here.
    Any assistance would be very welcome.
    I'm having an issue getting a reverse proxy and URL rewrite working in IIS 7.0.
    I need to redirect all requests with a specific virtual directory suffix only.
    ie; https://domain.test.com/outbound/Content/query_etc
    With /Outbound/ being the trigger.
    This should be redirected to http://10.10.10.10/inbound/Content/query_etc
    While at the same time, requests without the /outbound/ suffix should be handled locally.
    I have configured the reverse proxy as described in a few articles, and have had no luck.
    Here's a snippet from my (sanitized) web.config at the site level.
    <rewrite>
    <outboundRules>
    <rule name="ReverseProxyOutboundRule1" preCondition="ResponseIsHtml1">
    <match filterByTags="A" pattern="^http(s)?://10.10.10.10/inbound/(.*)" />
    <action type="Rewrite" value="https://domain.test.com/outbound/{R:2}" />
    </rule>
    <preConditions>
    <preCondition name="ResponseIsHtml1">
    <add input="{RESPONSE_CONTENT_TYPE}" pattern="^text/html" />
    </preCondition>
    </preConditions>
    </outboundRules>
    <rules>
    <rule name="ReverseProxyInboundRule1" stopProcessing="true">
    <match url="^outbound/(.*)" />
    <action type="Rewrite" url="http://10.10.10.10/inbound/{R:1}" appendQueryString="true" logRewrittenUrl="false" />
    </rule>
    </rules>
    </rewrite>
    To me, this looks correct, yet it doesn't work.
    With this, I get the normal 404 - Error Code 0x80070002, with the text indicating the local directory doesn't exist, so.... not being picked up by the filter for redirection.

    Hi Andrew,
    Looking at your requirements it appears you need Reverse Proxy To Another Site/Server.
    By using URL Rewrite Module together with
    Application Request Routing module you can have IIS 7 act as a
    reverse proxy.
    It seems like URL Rewrite can't re-route the request somewhere else out of the server.
    Even when you rewrite the url the actual connection remains with the server. Hence if your original server doesn't have /inbound/Content/query_etc  it will fail with 404.
    Hosting multiple domain names under a single account using URL Rewrite.
    It’s a common desire to have a single IIS website that handles multiple sites with different domain names.

  • TS1398 my problem is my iphone 4s is connected to the internet(wi-fi) with full signal strength but freezes when browsing and says "Cannot Open Page, Safari could not open page because the server stopped responding".

    my problem is my iphone 4s is connected to wi-fi with full signal(3 bars) strength but freezes when browsing and says
    "Cannot Open Page"
    "Safari could not open page because the server stopped responding"
    I already reset the iphone to its factory settings and erase all contents but still the browsing speed freezes or not searching at all. Sometimes it will work and fast but then the problem uccors every now and then. Iv'e been using iphone 4 for two years and I still have it and works fine compared to this IPHONE 4S.

    Settings → scroll down to Safari → in Safari settings, I selected both Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data.
    IF that does not work -
    Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Finally - if problem still present -
    Go to Settings>General>Reset
         Reset the network settings - you will need to add the password of your home WiFi in your phone once more
    The device should turn itself off & back on then go into Settings>Wifi and join your network

  • Here's a fix for Safari hanging and taking down the system..

    There appears to be a serious bug in Mac OS X's lookupd which can pull the rug right out from under Mac OS X Tiger. While this bug could possibly be triggered in a number of different ways, there has been a recent rash of reports that have been tracked to some mainstream Web sites such as FoxNews.com using links to an adware site js.adsonar.com. This document describes a quick way out of the hang and a simple way to block links to js.adsonar.com from taking down Tiger again. While this doesn't fix the underlying lookupd bug itself, it prevents Mac OS X from hanging, while allowing you to continue using Web sites like FoxNews.com with full Java and JavaScript access enabled.
    The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
    • You're surfing the web and the page you are on fails to completely load.
    • No further pages will load in your browser.
    • You can switch to other applications that may already be running and save any open files.
    • You can no longer launch any additional applications, their icons will bounce in the dock for a while and then they will just stop bouncing.
    • You can no longer use any other Finder functions.
    • You can no longer use command-option-escape to force quit.
    • You can not log out, restart or shut down.
    Apparently these symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
    If this sounds like a problem you are having, try the steps in the following link to fix it.
    Mac OS X Tiger lookupd bug & adsonar fix
    Hope it helps,

    Hi Bee,
    There is indeed "such a bug", though you may be fortunate enough to not be affected. Unfortunately MANY others are affected by this. I spent three days helping track this down (many of those 38 posts were while tracking it down in the Tiger discussions) and find a fix to this and thought that others might benefit by my efforts... By the way it's NOT a Safari bug, it happens in any browser, it's a "lookupd" bug which may be triggered by surfing to certain sites which contain links to "js.adsonar.com", which if you have JavaScript enabled can hang lookupd and take down your entire system... consider yourself lucky that it hasn't happened to you...
    Here is some background information if you don't believe me:

    I only posted this fix to the specific threads where people were having Safari hang, incase it might help them. Forgive me for trying to help them... I thought that was the point of these boards and that was why they started threads about their issues... I'd be willing to bet that this fix will indeed fix many of their problems...
    I also posted one additional new topic here on the Safari board and one on the Tiger board for new readers looking for solutions to the same system hangs they may be getting while surfing.
    If this fix does indeed help any of you other readers, please post back here so that Bee can indeed see that I'm not just posting here to waste my time...

  • System-wide Transparent Proxy With URL Patterns

    Internet censorship -where I live- has almost turned web unusable so  I decided to setup a transparent proxy using Tor for my home network.
    Since Tor is so slow -here- proxying all traffic through Tor would slow my connection to a crawl.  Therefore I need a mechanism to selectively proxy the traffic.
    I know a bit of 'iptables' and it looks to me like the solution to my problem.  However there's a trick.  As most of the websites I need to access through Tor (like Google+, Facebook and such) use several IP addresses for their entry points, it's almost impossible for me to add 'iptables' rules for all of those IP addresses.  I need a mechanism to proxy the traffic based on URL patterns.  For example I need to be able to proxy access to '*.facebook.com' through Tor.
    So the question boils down to:  how can I setup a system-wide transparent proxy using URL patterns?
    Any idea/hint is much appreciated.  TIA,
    Bahman

  • Safari hangs on URL starting on D

    As said in the subject, my iPhone hangs when I type URL's starting on 'D'. Very strange bug!
    All other characters works fine and so do 'D' if it isn't the first letter in the URL.
    I had this bug with 2.1 and have just upgraded to 2.2 and the bug is still there.
    Similiar experience, or even better a solution to this problem ?

    Try clearing the Internet history under +Settings > Safari > Clear History.+ My guess is that Safari is trying to autocomplete your URL, and the history file is corrupt.

  • Iphoto shuts down safari

    When I try to create an album on Facebook (or try to upload pictures for any other website) it opens Iphoto, but then it stalls and will eventually shut down Safari and give an error message (which will automatically be sent to Apple, but you do not hear from them)
    Below is a full copy of the error message received.

    You have installed the CT toolbar plug-in.
    That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
    If you are running Tiger or Leopard:
    Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
    /Library/Application Support/Conduit
    /Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
    /Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
    /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
    /Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit
    where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.
    If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:
    Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
    Library/Application support/conduit plugins
    Also, as mentioned by Gilli2000:
    Library/Receipts - If you read it, it has information in it at the bottom referring extensively to "CT" and "community toolbar".
    Maybe it is harmless, but trash those items anyway!
    If you are running Lion:
    From the Finder Menu bar, select Go ▹ Go to Folder, and in the box that opens write:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Conduit
    Delete the second item if it is there.
    Now select Go to Folder again and enter  /Library
    From the folder that opens, delete the following items if they are there (you may need your login password):
    Application Support/Conduit
    InputManagers/CTLoader
    LaunchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax
    then close the folder. Now select Go to Folder again and write: /Applications/Toolbars
    Delete that item and close the Finder windows you opened. Log out then log back in, and you should be rid of it.
    Note: Safari does not support any third-party toolbars except those supplied as an extension to Safari via the Extension Gallery.

  • URLConnection with Proxy (yeah URL's again but not simmilar to others;))

    Hy all,
    What i try to do: getting the content of a website over a Proxy.
    Well it took me some time to google and stuff and i found out this is something many ppl. are stuck at.
    The most common solution to do that is something like where i am at this point, there is a commented version of the code at the
    end of this post (And please note that my exception Handling should be taken as a 'how to not do' solution^^).
    public static void main(String[] args){
            java.net.URL url = null;
            URLConnection  con = null;
            InputStream in = null;
            String user = "usr";
            String passwd = "pwd";
            try{
              url = new URL("http", "anyProxy.com", 80, "http://www.google.ch");
              con = url.openConnection();
            }catch(Exception e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            con.setDoInput(Boolean.TRUE);
            con.setReadTimeout(10);
            con.setRequestProperty("Accept","text/xml,text/*,text/html");
            con.setRequestProperty("Cache-Control","no-cache");
            con.setRequestProperty("Proxy-Authorization", "Basic " + new sun.misc.BASE64Encoder().encode((user + ":" + passwd).getBytes()) );
            try{
                con.connect();
                in = con.getInputStream();
            }catch(IOException e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));
            String fullFile = "";
            try{
                for (String line = ""; line != null; line = reader.readLine()) {
                   fullFile += line;
            }catch(Exception e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            try{in.close();reader.close();}catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();};
            url = null;
            con = null;
            in = null;
            reader = null;
            System.out.println(fullFile);
        }So after this you should be able to read a url... but wait, there is MY problem, i get the content of the proxyserver delivered but not the site i want the content to be delivered AFTER passing the proxy (google in this case).
    I found about 30 Forums/ Posts that recomend that solution, 1 or 2 are mentioned that there wont be any content of the following site (google in this example) but NONE of these has a solution or a link to any informations how to solve that problem.
    Thank you for taking the time to read this Post, also thank you for any tips/links etc. that could solve this problem.
    I wish you a nice day;)
    Regards
    Balsi
    The commented solution should not be taken to seriously, this is how I interprete the solution and how i assume it works. It should not be taken
    word by word but at least help to understand a bit. Please post any badly wrong informations so i can delete/ change the comment, there is enoth
    of wrong information already out there...
    public static void main(String[] args){
            /*The URL just specifies a Resource, which means stuff like:
             *    - Protocoll => Which protocoll is needet, http, ftp, file etc. (File is used if URL represents a local file)
             *    - Adress, Proxys usw. Check out the API for overall Informations
            java.net.URL url = null;
            /*The URLConnections represents a specified Connection, note that the connection from
             *url.getConnection() is not yet a successfull connection to the adress specified
            URLConnection  con = null;
            //The InputStream will be used to get the Data from the Site
            InputStream in = null;
            //This is a proxy User if a proxy is between you and the internet
            String user = "usr";
            //This is the pw you need to authentificate  the user defined above when connecting to the proxy
            String passwd = "pwd";
            try{
            /* The Url now gets inicialised, the delivered parameters are:
             * String protocol: The protocoll we want to use (since we use a Proxy its http)
             * String host: The Proxyserver itself, can be the dns name or the ip
             * int Port: The Proxyservers port he's listening and accepting requests
             * String file: The URL we want to get after Proxy authentification
            url = new URL("http", "anyProxy.com", 80, "http://www.google.ch");
            /* We now open the connection, note that opening the connection does not mean
             * accutally connecting to a server! It just represents a Connection, in the real
             * World this would be the idear to open a browser and later type in a Url and press enter
            con = url.openConnection();
            }catch(Exception e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            // We need to indicate that we want to read content from that connection by setting true
            con.setDoInput(Boolean.TRUE);
            // Timeout if needet, default is somewhere between 10-30secs
            con.setReadTimeout(10);
            //Filter what date this connection accepts
    //        con.setRequestProperty("Accept","text/xml,text/*,text/html");
            //Filter weather we accept cached site data
            con.setRequestProperty("Cache-Control","no-cache");
            /* Now this is important, we specifie that this Connection will use a Proxy by setting the Attribute
             * Proxy-Authorizasion to a Base64 Encoded value which contains our user as well as the Password
            con.setRequestProperty("Proxy-Authorization", "Basic " + new sun.misc.BASE64Encoder().encode((user + ":" + passwd).getBytes()) );
            try{
            /* We now finally acctually connect to the server this is equal to pressing enter inside a
             * We-explorer such as IE, Mozilla etc. after typing in a URL
             * NOTE: This is not the same like IE, Mozilla etc. displaying something afterwards!
             *       (No worry, this will come soon)
            con.connect();
            /* There we go, we connected to the server and open a InputStream to get the data from it
            in = con.getInputStream();
            }catch(IOException e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            // We use a BufferedReader to read the InputStream
            BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in));
            // For now we use a String, note that a StringBuffer would be more effective looking at the performance
            String fullFile = "";
            try{
                for (String line = ""; line != null; line = reader.readLine()) {
                   fullFile += line;
            }catch(Exception e){
                e.printStackTrace();
            /* It's very recomendet to close all the connections/streams etc. especially if your application
             * isnt just a mainprogramm like this to show a simple example. If you would open serval connetions
             * parallely (Threads) not closing the streams/connections will fastly kill your memory;)
            url = null;
            con = null;
            //expecially the Streams&Buffers need to be closed but can throw a exception while trying it
            try{in.close();reader.close();}catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();};
            in = null;
            System.out.println(fullFile);
        }

    Hy and thanks for the fast replie, i will check out the Authenticator as well as the java.net.Proxy for further information, hopefully i get a sollution i then can post here;)
    Yeah, i wanted to comment that readTimeout but forgot, doesnt seem to work for me, no matter what i set there (had ranges from 1- 99999) the timeout always occurs after about 20 seconds (but it could also be that there is something like a not working authentication mechanism abortin my connection hu?)
    Well, going to check out the other two classes mentioned, of course going to reward you if this gets me to my aim;)
    Regards
    Balsi

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

    SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

    Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
    The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
    So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

    Lost ability to simply shut down Safari. Have no Apple icon or red "X" at top of toolbar.
    Must manually shut down when finished.
    There must be a way to return to normal.
    Thanks for your help.

    Quit Safari.
    Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
    Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and drag that file to the Desktop.
    Launch Safari and test.
    You don't mean the Apple icon on your toobar, not in Safari, or do you?
