When Should I Repair Permissions?

I've been back-reading the posts on repairing permissions after installing software. I'm still not clear on when it needs to be done. If I am installing more than one application, do I repair permissions after each install or only after all installs are completed?
Also, do I need to repair permissions after each Software Update?
MultiMacs

Repair permissions when they're broken. There's a lot of voodoo about this. 99% of the time it means absolutely nothing. Doing it routinely once a month is like locking your car and unlocking it again in the belief that it will run better.

• Should I repair permissions before or after updating to Mac OS X 10.7.2?

Hi,
Should I repair permissions before or after updating to Mac OS X 10.7.2? or should I fix permissions before and after the update?

This is not a routine maintenance. Upgrades can be screwed up if the system that is upgraded is screwed up. I believe in a "better safe than sorry" approach. If you repair permissions and the hard drive prior to an upgrade then if there be a problem perhaps that problem will not propagate to the new upgraded system. If there are no problems doing the repairs is harmless.
When it comes to the topic of permissions repairs there are many opinions but not much fact. In other words there doesn't appear to be a formal analysis of whether repairing permissions is only useful when a permissions problem arises. But there is a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting that a repair both before and after a major system upgrade can reduce the risk of problems.
This is my opinion on the matter. I do not generally disagree with Niel or MacJack, but as I said I prefer to be safe rather than sorry.
Here's my general approach:
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
Follow instructions for installation.

• What disk and when do I repair permissions?

Hi I'm wondering how and when to "repair permissions" - Do I select the icon in disk utility marked 111.8 GB Samsung HM120JC or the icon beneath it marked and named as my hard drive? Does it matter? And how often/when should I do this?
Thanks much
KB

Hi, Kent. It doesn't really matter whether you select the hard drive mechanism (the top line that you've named in your post) or the volume that appears as the startup drive on your desktop — either way, the permissions on that volume will be repaired. If your hard drive is partitioned into two or more volumes, and you select the drive mechanism, permissions will be repaired on each volume that contains an OS X installation. (Permissions can only be repaired on a volume that contains OS X; a partition that doesn't have OS X installed on it can't have its permissions repaired.)
You should always repair permissions after any software update, upgrade or installation that involves Apple's Installer application (Installer.app). Most knowledgeable folks here also recommend doing so before every such installation, upgrade or update, to prevent a damaged or corrupt permission from interfering with the Installer's business and thereby fouling up whatever's being installed.
Repairing permissions is not a cure-all, and though some people consider it a routine maintenance practice, others emphatically don't. I think of it as a totally harmless, free, quick, easy procedure that sometimes solves minor problems, and I probably do it more often than is really productive: every two or three weeks, even if I haven't installed anything lately or had any problems. But I always do it before and after every Apple software installation, even ones that are installed through the Software Update utility — and that means I never allow SU to install more than one thing at a time, specifically so I can repair permissions between installations.

When I run repair permissions I continue to get this message even after a full reformat and re-install of OS. "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."

Doug,
According to Apple, Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore.

• Why does "repair permissions" actually creates more repairs when again.

When I use Disk Utility repair permissions, I run it a second time and there were more instances than noted in the initial run. 13 the first time and 22 the second. To double check, I rebooted my MBP to make sure it wasn't an issue with a running program. The same thing happened, I got 13 instances the first time and when I hit it again, I got 22. I find it hard to believe that by running "repair", more instances are created.
Also, why are some things just not repaired?
Thanks so much for any guidance.
Sincerely,
Skip

Specifically, what "repair permissions" does is look at a bunch of files called "BOM files" or "Bill of Materials files", which is simply a list of what files where installed where and with what permissions. They are created by the Mac software package make that vendors use to build installation packages (if you've ever installed software that required you to run an installation program rather than just copy it to /Applications, that's what you have).
When you run "repair permissions", it compares the file's permissions with what's in the BOM. If they aren't the same, it changes the file's permissions to whatever the BOM says they originally were. The idea being that something might have altered the permissions on a file file making it impossible for you to access and thereby messing up anything that requires access to the file. In practice, that doesn't happen too often.
What does happen pretty often is that the software installer copies files and then changes permissions on them. Even the application may change permissions on the files. That's pretty common, and often necessary to the operation of a piece of software. So, despite doing a "repair permissions", some files and directories are going to simply defy having their permissions modified (particularly things like directories where log files are stored).

• Problem: I have to run repair permissions to access the internet using safari, firefox or chrome on my mac pro. What can I do to fix the problem once and for all?

This is what I get when I run repair permissions in disk utility. Thanks for any assistance you can give.

• New Mac Mini and Repairing Permissions

I've been having trouble with my Mail program and thought I would repair permissions to see if that would help. I ran disk utility from my internal hard drive and ran repair permissions. Apparently it found several permissions to repair, so I thought I would run repair permissions again and the same list appeared. Running a third time and the same list appeared again.Do these permissions ever get repaired? What do I do from here? Should I repair permissions after booting up off of my original system disk? This Mini is only a couple of weeks old and I'm already having problems with Mail and repairing permissions.
rskover

Thank you Tim but the computer is packed back waiting for TNT to take it back to Apple. I don't have time to play with permissions, the permissions are OK in the old computer.
This is what may have been your problem. The permissions on your old computer may not have matched the new computer. I think you gave up before the penny dropped.
They sell the computers very expensive and I think they would have to improve quality.
I am unsure how that can be one of your gripes as when the cube came out it was way overpriced in comparison to their other desktops. That did not stop your or I getting one then.
Your issue was a software problem not a hardware problem so no matter what kind of mac you had it would have needed troubleshooting.
The quality of the new mac mini far exceeds that of the cube. Try playing 1080P high definition media on your cube, or even 480P for that matter. Try outputting 5.1 surround sound from your cube without the addition of a firewire audio interface.
I know how frustrating it can be when something just does not seem to work. I have encountered this a few times in my work. However sometimes I just have leave it come back with fresh eyes and try other approaches and I succeed.
What you need to appreciate installing an upgrade should be planned for any eventuality. In business upgrades are scheduled to have the minimum impact on the workplace. That being said I have worked 48 hrs solid over a weekend getting systems up for a monday morning. They are not always straightforward.

• Does repair permissions etc. need to be done after upgrade to 10.6?

My used Early 2009 Mini came with Leopard and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard. Haven't had the chance to use it yet. Need to update to the latest version of SL. Just wondered if I should do repair permissions etc. before using it. Or install all of the software I need and do the repair permissions etc. after that.
Thanks.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).

Permissions repair complete

HI Steve,
These "messages" are not "errors" that mean anything is wrong. Nothing is wrong, and some future update will likely address the issue. For now you can simply ignore them.
If you see any relating to SUID, see here. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
The only time it's necessary to repair disk permissions is before and after all software updates.
And it can take as long as 10 to 15 minutes in some cases.

• Repair Permissions - "Info does not esist"

Just curious - Whenever I run Repair Permissions, the first line of the resulting log says "parent directory ./Users/Shared/SC Info does not exist". What is this telling me? The computer seems to be running just fine, and no other problem areas show up on the log. Thanks for the help.
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi, R.G.
Well, this could lead to long and tedious UNIX tutorial. The bottom line is that you need not be concerned about this message when you run Repair Permissions from Terminal.
The info you posted is a directory listing. It basically says that the Users > Shared > SC Info folder (directory in UNIX parlance) contains a file called SC Info.sdb. The data from the ls command you issued provides details about the ownership, permissions, size, etc of that folder (line ending in "."), its enclosing folder (line ending in ".." — the Shared folder), and the file(s) contained in the SC Info folder (line ending in "SC Info.sidb").
The data in the first four columns is explained in Figure 2 of "Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X", though one also needs to read the earlier part of that document to understand what columns 1, 3, and 4 are about.
The rest of the columns are explained in the section entitled "The Long Format" of man (UNIX manual) page for the ls (list directory contents) command.
If you open the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared folder in Finder, you won't see SC Info folder because the "Invisible" file system attribute for that folder has been enabled in order to hide it.
If I execute the same ls command I provided to you earlier (ls -al /Users/Shared/SC\ Info/), I see:
total 0
drwxrwxrwx 3 drsmoke wheel 102 May 26 2004 .
drwxrwxrwt 31 root wheel 1054 Mar 17 05:56 ..
-rw-rw-rw- 1 drsmoke wheel 0 May 26 2004 SC Info.sidb
The zero (0) highlighted in red in my output indicates the file SC Info.sidb is zero bytes in size. This is because no content (songs, etc.) has been purchased from the iTMS on this computer. That file on your Mac has a non-zero size since you've purchased songs or other content from iTMS.
None of the Apple Developer documents address the specific purpose of the SC Info.sidb. In investigating this file, and comparing it with the same file on some other Macs, it was found that this file's size is non-zero if one has purchased content from iTMS and a little more digging led to the understanding that this contains descriptor keys, perhaps related to authorizing a Mac to play purchased music.
If you really want to get into the UNIX command line, check out the UNIX-related books I recommend in my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ. Terminal is powerful and is especially useful in exploring the underpinnings of Mac OS X, accessing facilities that have yet to be exposed in the GUI (Graphical User Interface), as well as troubleshooting. One should study on it a bit since, if used incorrectly, certain Terminal commands can erase your hard drive or otherwise render one's system unusable.
I hope the info above explains this better.
Good luck!

• Repair permissions utility crashes

When I run "repair permissions" it crashes halfway thru. It never did before I upgraded iTunes to 6.0. I can't think of any other changes I have made recently. Also certain apps like iPhoto and Photoshop have slowed down dramatically. Any remedies?
iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x) 768 mb ram

Hello Barbara,
Sorry for your problems you are experiencing I can relate.I can't seem to boot from the installation disc to check the drive that way. Is that fact that I couldn't do that mean there's a problem? Or am I ok to upgrade to Tiger?
Perhaps something is wrong with the Install CD, ( I see your specs are 10.2 but you speak of Panther ) I presume the CD is a few years old at this point, You intend to move on to Tiger, correct ? You can then check the Hard Drive with the Tiger installation CD, unless someone else has any other thoughts. Have you backed Up your important data. Home folder items, Music, pictures, all you would want to save, if you have not, do that backup.that should be done regularly, so that regardless of the issues, you have your important files. Drives can fail at any time. I am not sure that not being able to boot from the CD means there is a problem with with the HD or the CD. I hope this helps some, Barbara.. Post back & let us know how you do with Tiger. Best of Luck.
Kind Regards,
Eme

• Difference between "Verify" and "Repair" Permissions?

Hi,
I was wondering if there's any harm for the reapair permissions proccess by clicking the "repair" permissions button first rather than clicking the "verify" and then "Repair" permissions button on disk utility.
Thanks!

Niel wrote:
There isn't. Verify permissions is a waste of time.

I thought the same, since DU will tell you in the progress screen when you hit repair permissions something like "Verifying and Repairing Permissions on Macintosh HD... and so forth" So I should be ok by just hitting the repair permission button ony, right?
Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
It's what I do and I should think everyone else. 'Verify' doesn't actually do anything, just lists problems, so there's little point. It's different with disk repair, because you can't repair the disk you're booted from, but you can at least check to see if there's a problem. This doesn't apply with permissions.
So in your view Verify is just a diagnostic, while Repair is a diagnostic and a repair right?

• Repairing Permissions & 10.5.2 Upgrade

Before I start the update to 10.5.2 I have the following questions about repairing permissions:
1) Why do you have to repair permissions before you do the update?
2) Exactly how do you repair permissions?
3) What am I looking for when I do this process?
4) Should I repair permissions after I do the 10.5.2 Upgrade?
I have a brand new MacPro (Early 2008) and I'm trying to avoid any mistakes.

1. To insure that everything is OK before hand.
2. In the Utilities folder is an application called Disk Utility.
Open it up, click on your HD on the left sidebar, and then click on "Repair Disk Persmissions.
3. Nothing really. Let it do its thing.
4. Yes. Anytime you install something you should run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.

• "Repair Permissions" Errors

After the recent up date I get the following errors when I run "Repair Permissions"
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Now what? :o)
P.S. As a smiley maker, I must protest the lack of smilies on this forum!

Just ignore those error messages. They mean nothing. People are always asking about them. I have no idea why Apple put them there.
You want smilies?

• Error while repairing permissions

Hi,
I am getting an error when trying to repair permissions on my Powerbook harddrive. When trying it with Disk Utility, after a while I am getting the following:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility"
When running "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /" in the Terminal, I am getting the following error (after a while):
"* malloc[411]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x50a680; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)"
Any idea what is happening and how to fix it? I am planning to upgrade to Tiger soon. Might this be something that would be fixed by the upgrade (I am NOT planning to do a clean install), or should I fix it before upgrading?
Thanks for any help!
Ingo Weiss

Ingo,
There's a workaround offered at the top of this forum page. Another solution offered on the web is to remove the i386 binaries from the Universal (FAT) binary distribution of iTunes. You can use lipo to do this or search the web- someone created a GUI frontend for lipo. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the application. The problem persists for some in Tiger.
I haven't upgraded iTunes to 6.0.2. I'm running 6.0.1 and receive this error when I verify permissions.
: object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (inconsistant sizeofcmds field in mach header)
Disk Utility doesn't stop but the error is thrown. We all may be waiting for an Apple fix.
